  • It might have been a little quiet on the unboxing front during lockdown, but we're about to put that right!
We've just taken delivery of a massive shipment of Gibson Customs, included the guitars John & Joel hand picked in Nashville in February this year.

@32:36; 61 SG reissue. Notice that it came in the previous Gibson Custom Shop carrying case; the black one with the Gibson logo printed on top. All the Les Paul were in the new Chinese made cases. They no longer have the Gibson logotype, and if this was a cost cutting move, it is disappointing.

The black Gibson USA LP at 29:30. While it's true, "once you've seen one you've seen them all", there's no visible woodgrain, etc - seems a bit off to think the first non-burst of the shipment is the 'generic' one. I've got respect for each instrument & my preference would be a lemon burst or 'no-burst', however, it seems the market is stuck in an endless loop with the orange-ish burst nostalgia. I can't fault Gibson for building what sells, but I wonder why demand isn't higher for, say, the High Performance lineup or the Modern designs? Gibson came out with some beautiful solid-color Standards a few years ago (red, orange, yellow, black) & they sold immediately for like $6k US each. The "true-to-59" look has been done to death. Is there anything original on the horizon from Gibson USA? I'm not talking about more robo-tuners or Floyd Rose bridges & near-flat necks, but why not a couple of LP's or ES's with maple or Richlite necks, or perhaps some modern finishes like the Fender Ultra Strat in 'Texas Tea'. Just spitballing, but if everyone wanted the same guitar except for woodgrain pattern & neck thickness, why do the fangs come out anytime Gibson offers anything beyond that? I'm a big ES fan, have a black satin ES-339, but 3-4 color choices for what, 60 yrs now? I'd like to see them offer more ES choices. Anyone who's not into the Les Paul because of how uncomfortable they are on the lap, should consider an ES-339 or ES-355 if they don't want a huge ES-335. Gibson's made *some* truly ugly offshoots back in the 80s/90s, but the market overall has been cruel to anything that isn't an orange/yellow/bourbon burst. Cheers to Joe Bonamassa for helping bring the black with gold hardware back into the market.

    • @geetarbube
      @geetarbube Před 4 lety

Well, “most” people don’t own a single guitar at all. The Custom Shop guitars are selling pretty well and have for some time. They were not the problem when Gibson was filing for bankruptcy protection. As for who is buying them, collectors and simple folks who have saved over time to make the investment. As of January 2020, the average price of an engagement ring was over $6,000. There the adage has been “three months salary” which seems ridiculous...to me. Realistically, “normal” people simply finance these guitars.
It would seem that the Custom Shop is doing just fine.

It may be historically accurate, but I don't like how these CHINESE MADE Les Paul cases have a latch right at the bottom of the lower bout where the rear strap button is. If you stand the case on end like you would if you had a row of cases, that latch is going to get all bent up. Dude almost never latches it when he puts the guitar away either. And while I'm at it he should have taken his rings off. I hate the sound when he slaps them against the guitars.

I have wondered about that too. What's the mark-up on these guitars? I am guessing it has to be at least 20%, but I would probably hypothesize it is somewhere around 35%.
The more Peach buys, the best profit margin they get, since Gibson must giving them a large discount for purchasing that many in one shot.
My second question is going to be, how long do any of these high priced guitars stay on their books?

I wouldn't fret over it. You saw what I did there? 😄
Seriously though, I played 6 of the custom shop 59 reissues last year and my regular standard 60s was just as good as any of them in playability and tone. If you spend time looking you can find an excellent used les Paul for 1.5k instead of spending 6.5k for a new custom shop, which I will never do even though I can afford one. Spend your money wisely.

They are beautiful guitars yes, but if you want a les Paul you can find amazing les Paul’s without spending 6,500$ for one of these custom shop ones

if you want something that bad only you can make it happen, i waited 15 years for my 1st les paul then another 15 for my 1st custom shop....depends on what you are willing to sacrifice.....no beer , cigs, eat less, get rid of the wife and kids (biggest drain on anyones pocket)......depends on how bad you want something as to how you get it legally but sacrifice everything to make it happen.

Have most of these got Bolivian wood fretboards ? It's a shame at this sort of money they are using a cheap Rosewood substitute. My 2018 R8s have Indian Rosewood Fingerboards I am amazed people will pay big money for Pau Ferro it's cheap and feels nasty in mine and alot of other pro guitarists opinion.

Love your channel, but Gibson unboxing is a lot more boring than Fender. Same thing over an dover from Gibson even the color. I’m sure they are great guitars but boring to watch for me after the first 3 LPs.

Jesus, he is the most English person ever, so annoying and that grunting when he lifts a case, you’d think they weighed a ton!

Interesting? When you say English what do you mean? Because if you talking about his accent he's from the London area. To say he's so English because of that one regional specific accent tells me you know fxxk all and are probably America THE place for knowing fxxk all about anywere or anything

Who is buying guitars and especially these ones? I know, there is a whole line of Muslim boys outside your store wanting to buy all these guitars now.
These were a terrible investment for you. The world which was when you ordered these is long gone and never coming back.
It was all designed that way. They pulled the rug right out from under you.
There is something sad about watching this.
