Turning Circles: A Sign of Dementia in Dogs

- Walking in circles can be a symptom of canine cognitive dysfunction (dog dementia) and other serious illnesses or conditions. Sometimes it is hard to tell that a dog is doing it. This video shows some subtler circling behaviors along with more obvious ones. For more information see my book: "Remember Me? Loving and Caring for a Dog with Canine Cognitive Dysfunction" on Amazon: www.amazon.com/dp/B018224Y5Y
My 14-year old American Pit Bull Terrier has CCD diagnosed by my vet. He is receiving supplements and has improved his ability to eat. I am aware that CCD is not reversal because we detected the condition late. We are devoted to him until he crosses the rainbow bridge. This is my canine companion who was an athlete doing agility, AKC CGC, and a good ambassador for the breed here in the Philippines. Seeing him deteriorate broke my heart. BUT, through my dear friend in Australia, who cared for her Rhodesian Ridges until they were 15 to 16 years old, she advised me to see my canine companion as he is today, not when he was young, accept him as he is in his senior years, and be there to provide the best care possible. My canine companion is being treated no differently than my 97-year old mother lives in the same house. They both received 24/7 excellent care here in the Philippines. Thank you for this video. I am reading your book "Remember Me" and it is very helpful. I will check your website and see if there are any support groups out there. Be safe and well.
My dog is 16 years old and does this frequently inside my apartment, especially at night. He's gone blind and deaf within the last couple years and it's been a struggle. He can walk relatively normal on a leash with me guiding him away from obstacles. He still eats and seems "there" and enjoys the walks so I'm not letting him go just yet. Trying cbd oil and so far it seems to calm him down.
When quality of life is no longer there, it's time to not be selfish and do the right thing 😧😭
That's where I'm at right now. my dog circles endlessly and she's totally blind in one eye. Her body is still going but her mind is gone. I'm exhausted but don't want to let her go.
That's where we are at now. Our little chihuahua x pug is 16yrs old and walks around aimlessly all day - he won't go into his bed unless I put him in the lying down position...he gets stuck and I have to help him out, hasn't drunk water for 2yrs!! (We feed him a raw diet that we mix with water so he gets fluid that way, and still loves to eat). But he is completely deaf and almost blind, doesn't recognise us at all, never wags his tail .. basically a shell, so heartbreaking.... My head tells me it's time, but my heart can't let go.... He's been like this for 2yrs already...

@@KerenMuir Does he walk normally on a leash? My dog is like this but he seems to return to normal when I walk him. I guide him away from obstacles and stuff which seems to make him more confident. He still circles inside but this is something I can do to make him happy..
@@KerenMuir For the last 2 years, the only way my 16 yr old Maltese will drink water is to hold him over the bowl until he starts drinking, then set him down over the bowl- I put both his food and water bowls at the right height using folded towels.
Sad to see dogs become sick with anything. That’s why I am afraid of getting a dog. I won’t be able to endure seeing him suffer
Speaking as someone who has lost 4 dogs, no matter what may happen good or bad, it's always worth it to have a dog that you love and who loves you. It's was worth every moment of it with each of them. You do the best you can when they're young or old. I honestly can't say that I regret having any of them even when I had to let them go. Nellie (our first mini schnauzer) was very smart and had such a cute pot belly, Mattie was also smart but was more territorial and became Nellie's buddy, Lil Bit and Bandy we got when they were older but they were our precious boys, and Bandy practically glued himself to my hip but I didn't mind at all
@@lucindamobley5492 Absolutely agree, I'm probably going to loose doggo number 2 soon but I wouldn't trade it for anything. It's heartbreaking to loose someone you love but it just highlights how important it is to have that connection in the first place
@@harlandsanders894 I almost hesitate to ask, but how is doggo number 2 doing?
Same, but I have a dog
Im going through it now and I have have waves of crying. I dont want another dog because its so emotional seeing the love of my life suffering. I got him at 10 now hes 14.
My cattle dog is 15, and he just started wondering aimlessly around our house, doing circles from room to room. He's house trained, but he's been having more and more accidents in the house. Getting "stuck" in places, like ill walk in and hes just standing in a corner with his forehead against the wall. Ive put up gates to confine him to the living room, because he keeps slipping out on the tile floor that lines our kitchen and hallway.
Thankyou so much for this video. Our 17 year old fatso has been walking in circles and weak legged for the last 4-5 months, we’d looked at a number of potential causes but seeing this video and the stiff leg your beautiful dog had… there is no doubt she has CCD. Thankyou so much once again.
😭i didnt know a visit to vet would solve the problem. I had a puppy once called it snoopy. It would always walk in circles whenever i took it for a walk. I thought it was an abnormality. People would stare at me and my dog in amazement and laugh but i never gave him up he died after a worm started growing under his tongue of which i had no knowledge of. RIP SNOOPY!!
Dementia damn you that was such a good dog.
Iam always feeling sad when i see these kinda symptom ,today i have met vet for asking my dog got that or its just happening ,cuz my dog was walking like circling but not small range one on her standing place ,he said its not dementia so i am so stable unlike i was so much crying yesterday, thanks for sharing this info,i wish our dogs live healthily for long time with us
Thank you for this vid it is informative and very helpful. Tomorrow I will go to put him sleep for ever, I’m very sad. Your vid help and a lot of comments here as well.
Blessings y’all
That’s what my yorkie started to do 😢 I had to put him down there was nothing else that would help my poor yorkie would just go round and round constantly
My dog was around 17 or 18 years old. He lost control of his bowels and would run in circles for hours when I went to work. When I got back home there would be a circular track of poop and it would be all over his paws. It was quite horrible. He eventually had to be put to sleep.
My girlfriend's Weiner dog is doing exactly the same thing right now and he is 15 years old.
Thx for help! Bless you!
Tysm for the help my dog keep doing the circle thing
Thank you for this information. I’m trying to figure out what’s wrong with my dog. The vet did blood work and didn’t find anything but my dog wobbles then falls to the side.
My buddy is 15! He goes in circles for ever. When we walk always wants to go left. He gets stuck between a chair,or in a corner. Goes outside to use the bathroom ,then goes in the house afterwards. We get very little sleep anymore. He has diabetes, went blind from that. Then We got his eyes fixed. He has congested heart failure, pancreatitis and we take home to a animal chiropractor.
Where did U get his eyes fixed? My little Jack Russell is completely cloudy in her right eye & now the other isn't far behind. We wanted her to be able to see us & Where's she is going... our girl is 14-15 yrs old.
My friends dog looks at me than stands up and starts walking in big circles,he makes around 30-20 circles and lays down and then again for 1 minute he keeps doing circle again! What does that mean
I want to take my dog to the vet but my father won’t listen. I don’t want my dog to die a painful death. Idk what to do anymore I ha e been crying all night
You are experiencing a Life Lesson Motivator for why you will NEVER in your future life not have the money or means to take care of something you love my friend. It's a hard lesson learned, but a lesson learned nonetheless. Best wishes.
@@oklagrowmie5587 that’s biased...some people financial means can change -not everyone can assume they will have the money always
My dog went blind approximately 1.5 years ago and he also walks in circles and has difficulty maintaining his balance. Do you think it’s a result of his blindness possibly the same diagnosis?
Could circling in an old dog be caused by arthritis drug?
My 13 year old dog was diagnosed with SARDS about two weeks ago, and has been blind for a total of 4 weeks now (maybe 5). I noticed that she started turning in circles yesterday. When she does it, she turns in the type of circles dogs do when they are about to use the bathroom (#2) but she doesn’t do anything and does it every minute it seems like. She does it even after she’s used the bathroom. 🥺
😢
Found it!
I have my 15 years old french poodle start since a month with this behavior so, so what does it cause it? Does exist cure of some medicine to heal it?
Great info.
This helped.
My dog fell off the roof 14 feet and started circling immediately
How did your dog fall off of a 14-foot roof??
@@SpicyGelato98bro hadn't payed his bills
Your dog probably has brain damage not dementia..
My dog goes in circles really fast! We went to the vet and, they said she must of hit her head really hard when she was a baby witch caused and ear infection , eyesight to not see clear and, something with her head
Same thing the get told me about my Rocky. It thing they said the same thing to anyone with a dog suffering dementia. 😢
The site dogdementia.com/ is not working. My buddy is doing exactly as yours almost all the same. What can I do? Can somebody tell me what have you done to help your buddy got better?
O was hoping for a video, I can't do this
My chinchilla does this too. So sad she's only 2 years old
I have taken our little Chihuahua to the vet yesterday because she is unable to keep her balance. She tilts her head to the right and walks in Circles constantly. This morning (the next day) she has not eaten anything and will only drink water off my finger tips. She is peeing but only pooping very little. The vet gave her medication to help with stomach irritability but nothing else. The Vet told me she had seen this before and some dogs come out of it over time and others will get so bad that they will fall over completely loosing their balance. Our little dog is 14 years old and we are regretting the day we have to put her down. She doesn't seem to be in pain at this time but not drinking water or eating she won't last long. Anyone have suggestions on a liquid that she may want to drink. I'm wondering if the problem has affected her sense of smell or taste? Sassie could use some prayers. The date is 9/26/2019
Kirk, little Cricket seemed to forget how to drink water. She would drink milk (not ideal for adult dogs) and sometimes broth (unsalted). Mostly I coped because she still ate and I could make her meals into soup. I have a blog post called "The Secret to Filling a Food Tube" that has hints about mixtures that work in that way of delivering food and that dogs find tasty. Good luck with your little one. eileenanddogs.com/blog/2014/11/03/food-tubes-dog-training/
Sounds like Vestibuler. My dog had it and didnt get better. Couldnt walk or stand. Barely ate. I had to let him go after a week.
I think you should see a different vet try looking up one that specializes in senior dogs.
Can someone tell me like why my dog is twitching and going in circles and one of her eyes are huge and the other is not??????
Try Google and put in your dogs symptoms it will probably give you a clue to different symptoms and diseases it could be. 🙏🏻
Hi. My dog is 14. One side of her skull has lost all muscle and her one eye ball is no longer visible due to this. Without support it has sucked into her skull.
She had seizures twice. Eyes twitching side to side.
It’s been at least 8 months since I’ve seen a seizure.
She eats, and wags her tail during the day. At night she circles and smashes into everything. I’m about 7 weeks into getting sleep like I have a newborn baby.
Any advice? I’m so tired. She doesn’t seem to be in pain but relentless walking and circling…
I miss my dog
I think you should go to the vet if money is a problem maybe try calling your local animal shelter and they could point you in the right direction. 🙏🏻for you and your sweet dog.
Please give your dogs turmeric and black pepper supplement. The difference it will make is amazing. If you doubt this please Google. I am testament to the realities of the benefits
Realmente ayuda, mi perra lo consume y si ha mejorado
@@yessigarcia91mejoró es decir ya no camina los círculos tan seguido ? O mejoró en ir a

All the first circling clips I would think looking for a place to poop but the inside video is obvious
🥺💔🙏
They circle to pee too
this is different, my dog just urinated and now he's making circles
I notice her back legs are not bending leg joints are stuck. Pls, take care she wants to stay very close to you because this is the age where pets want to be with you.
If you dog is spinning from CCD what can you do help?
If your dog is spinning bad it is most likely vestibular disease.
Jamie Swanson so then what you do
Daniel afg put to sleep? There is always something besides putting an animal to sleep. Try talking to your dog in a calm voice...reminding him/her of things...etc...re-training.... It will take love and patience...:-)
@@DebbieTomkoSUNSHINE Unfortunately, I think I might have to put mine to sleep. She's 18 yrs old and is a pure bred chiuahua. In my opinion, she's to old, and any medication at this point for her, I don't think so, u don't want her to suffer like that if she does manage to live a bit more, but like that? No.
@@DebbieTomkoSUNSHINE mine just started doing this a couple of weeks ago, but she is blind and deaf so what else can be done
Please feed your dogs a raw grass feed diet. Up their fats. We have a serious Prion problem in our meat industry.
It's those darn flea meds.
You are probably right. Heart worm and flea meds in one.
My dog doesn’t take flea medication and she is now doing this . She will be 16 on Monday the 14th
