  • Mangrove Jacks Craft Series Kveik IPA is one of the most viewed beer kits on my website but not the most purchased - My guess is the name Kveik is a bit non-descript and people aren't quite sure what its all about.
And Mangrove Jacks also tell me its one of their best selling kits.
So we put it to the test and take this kit from brew to glass. We step out the process at a high level, show the end product and give a full review of the brew.
But good brews are meant to be shared with friends! Overall the brew was rated around 6.5-7/10 but those who liked a strong citrus profile were definitely more likely to favour the beer.
And when you watch the video make sure you listen out for the Kveik Yeast - which can be purchased separately and has some really distinctive characteristics that make it an interesting yeast to brew with.

I've done the same kit but with MG Beer Enhancer 2 and with an extra 100g Idaho 7 for dry hops, only used one package of yeast since Kveik likes to be underpitched. Added one package of MG yeast nutrition as well. My color was much brighter, more yellowish and it was great! Reactions from friends and family were great! I suggest you revisit the recipe and try again!

Thanks and fair comments. Agree - changing ingredients especially malt extract to enhancer can change the colour and body composition of the beer significantly and the addition of additional hops can significantly change the flavour profile. Definitely some food for thought if I do this brew again.

Hi Russell, another great video, I’ll have to try that kit! Question, what’s the best way to store your home brew beer once bottled if you aren’t going to drink them straight away? I’m bottling into 500ml glass bottles so end up with a lot of bottles after a brew and takes me a while to get through them. Thanks for your advice mate 👍

Hi Jay, general guideline would be out of direct sunlight, cool and dry. For me that's my garage. The beer won't go off, but do keep an eye on it for over-carbonation particularly over summer when the air temp is warmer. Did you use flip top bottles or have you capped?

Thanks for your reply 👍 I’m capping and I’ve got a feeling my first brew I’ve done has over carbonated in the bottles, I’ve stored them in the coolest room in the house but have noticed the head is big and flavour profile has changed and now has a funny after taste? My brew was the Mangrove Jacks craft series Golden Larger #7 and I bottled it 5 weeks ago, I’ve still got 12 x 500mls bottles left 😢

@@jaybellanzgmail The overcarbing is more of a problem in summer when the temp is warmer. One thing you can try is If the brew is starting to over carbonate chill as normal and then pour the bottles into a pouring jug and leave them in the fridge for 30 minutes before you drink. This will release some of the carbonation and make it nicer to pour/drink. As long as you have room you can also store the bottles in the fridge, which will help the carbonation aspect. The flavour comment is interesting. You noticed the off-flavour develop in the brew over time, not from the outset?

@@homebrewrepublic1993 thanks for that advice, yes I’ve only just picked up a funny flavour now after the bottles have been stored for 5 weeks. I live down in the Hamilton so similar temps to you up in Auckland.

I’ve only just noticed that you’ve got a shop to purchase supplies from, that’s awesome turning a hobby into a business 👏 I will definitely start getting supplies from you as I appreciate your videos and advice 👍

Hi Russell, do you think it could be possible in one of your next videos to do a short clip of when you do the bottling? Only if it’s not too much trouble, I just want to make sure that I’m bottling correctly

Hi Jay, Yep - no worries. But as a heads up Because I generally mature brews for longer before I review it would be 6-8 weeks until a video I start this week hits online and I don't have any brews in the fermenter now.
      Couple of things:
      - sanitise the bottles and caps as you are filling them. I have a sink full of sanitiser. Rinse the inner of the bottles directly before you are filling.
      - Same with the caps - sanitise before they go on.
      - I would use a bottling wand which I think you would have got with your kit. Reduces oxidation when placing into the bottle.
      - Did you say you were using 500ml bottles? Did you use carb drops or did you mix priming sugar in?

@@homebrewrepublic1993 hey Russell, no worries totally understand about delay for next vid 👍 Thanks for advice on bottling, yes that was one of the issues I came across bottling into 500ml bottle as you need 1 & 1/2 Mangrove Jacks drops per bottle for the priming sugar so I used 1 x drop and 2gms of sucrose to make up the rest of the priming sugar as was sure how to accurately cut the drops in half
