I use mGBA, specifically mGBA-nightly-2016-10-13, because the versions after that have given me some problems with multiplayer. I have barely tested more than 2 players, but I believe 4p still works as well as 2p.
This video cleared up two questions I've had from practically my childhood, 1. What is head to head like? and 2. Is it possible to have the wrong background in the County Road level? ( In this case, the Power plant background in the Country part of the map. ) But it leaves me with 2 new questions now; 1. What is the minimum and maximum amount of " matches " ( in the video you selected 4 ) and 2. if you color edit one of your vehicles will the other player see the edited colors, or if they edited the same kart will they see their altered colors? ( i.e. if player 1 chooses Krusty will it have player 1 or 2's edit of that kart or will it be default? )
I didn't know the answer to either question, but I just checked it out. The number of matches goes from 1 to 99! For the color edit, I turned Homer's car blue and started a match, and the blue car actually did show up on both GBAs.
What emulator do you need to do this? also can you also do 4 player games Etc.?

I just noticed that there's no traffic whenever you play this mode. Cars usually roam around the area when you play single player.

This is honestly my first time seeing the two player stream: it is quite similar to the console ports albeit the map is flat. 😸😇😎😂
