No he didn't. If he had, it would have been generously sprinkled with mass masala and pointless mass elevation slow motion scenes with many historical inaccuracies, or even an item song and romance songs or irrelevant heroic dance for commercial content. Bahubali had that creative scope, because it is fantasy where the hero can singlehandedly lift not just a stone shivalinga but a 1000ft golden statue. He is not only fire-resistant, but also can stand and ride 2 running bulls at a time and land just like that. They can make human catapults from palm trees and fly across the sky and land with their armour on the enemy's fort. But logically, these cannot be and should not be done to portray real life historical figures and realistic political drama and fictional conflicts based on real events in a historic backdrop.

Illogical superhuman fight scenes were cringe and unrealistic to me. You can't do that to increase the impact of the chozhas or any actual people in history by adding masala. You didn't like it and found it unengaging because you didn't get those "mass elements" you were expecting, while I had a different opinion of these "masala elements" forced into a novel adaptation just for the sake of grandness and pulling crowds. All SSR's movies are made to attract the audience, which is a very good thing in a way, but also over the top with masala and unrealistic heroes all the time. I am not blaming anyone, that's his style and the audiences love it. But I felt that it should not be done to a real historic backdrop or people who lived in history, just because it pulls more crowd or people think it's "impactful". So you are not okay with someone having a problem with adding masala and historical deviations to portray a celebrated emperor "impactfully", but completely alright and found no offense in saying something like "you can go to Tamil channels than shitting here"????? Arulmozhi (aka RajaRaja Cholan), Vandiyathevan, Kunthavai, etc. were real historical heroes celebrated in rural legends, just imagine a movie based on Chathrapathi Shivaji or any culturally celebrated king, and adding commercial masala there like an item dance or intimate romance song to him, or an illogical supernatural fight scene, will that be acceptable in any way???? Isn't that disrespectful to him and our history? This is exactly the same scenario here, it's just that you all haven't known or studied much about them, that's it.
To avoid confusion i have watched Kranti Vloggers Explanation of Ponniyan selvan twice, helped me a lot while watching the movie. surprisingly the screenplay is also executed the same way as Kranti explained. Over all a decent watch. Could have been better

I am a Tamilan. I grew up with this book. I agree with your review 100% movie execution is very bad. It feels very carelessly made. Character depths are not captured. Pandiya rebels story should have been explained little more. Madhurandhaga cholan should have been explained more after all entire plot is happening to make him the next king. it's not well explained what is his right. Who is he. Better to have made this in 3 parts. May be they could have taken out one or two songs and spent time on character development. People who does not know the story beforehand will not feel attracted to any characters

regarding last point. Not necessary to have one person to root for. Take ayyappanum koshiyum for example, where there are 2 people with their own flaws. There are other movies where there is no particular end or resolution, just as viewers, we get a glimpse of a particular event, with all the intricacies explained. Idk about others, but I personally do enjoy these sorts of films as well as stories driven to their logical end.

PS Novel fans would have enraged if rajamouli directed a movie/ series of this story. Rajamouli is only good at making over the top masala movies. He cannot make a movie with complicated stories with realistoc scenes.
It's not that bad as you made it sound. Movie is executed pretty well and keeps us invested throughout. Remembering the name of the characters is bit tough. Overall a good movie.

This gives direction to audience to think in that path to predict the next sequence,but director has to prove wrong the predictions of audience and make them suprise with twists... that's how I think story will be successful,movie will be box office hit!!!

When releasing as a Pan Indian movie, characters should have been introduced well, acting wise everyone killed it, but failed to connect the audience with the characters, maybe Tamil audience would have connected, but not others, just because of the lack of character and dynasty introduction.
The attempt to make such a massive project in 2 films in not easy. The choice to make it in 2 movies is understandable given the budget constraints. but saying the movie does injustice to the books in not fair, bro. On top of that, with out reading the books you won't understand how well the scenes were translated onto the screen.
Then why pan India?
Idhi mythology kadhu. History,history ni history laga nr depict cheyali. For example padmavaat..chala chaos jarigindhi to make it more entertaining for audience n all ani adhi chala controversy ayyindhi. Yk how tamilians are particular abt their history and language. Ofcourse nee opinion idhi i respect it kani you would’ve loved it if u did research on this movie like reading abt characters before u go to film. I highly recommend anyone to read names and abt history before y’all go to theatre. Pure maniratnam mark film idhi. I personally loved it. Running time koncham taginchalisindhi. But it is above avg imo. Ink detailings ki velle untaru but running time ni drushtilo petti cut chesaru anipistundi (again this is my assumption) history based idhi so i woul genuinely applaud them for this attempt.

I totally agree with barbell. But I really feel he is hiding his opinions as people might get offended.
My views :
- Why shouldn't we compare with Bahubali. Honestly, if the story is that deep and convinces that they really did a great job, we won't thik about Bahubali.
- If they really don't want to invest on war/fights, why did they even touch it. Where did they spend the 500cr. Non sense fight coreography.
- Meruputega characters: Most characters might be well introduced in books. But there is no connection to the characters in the movie.
- Too much lag- A lot of scenes were just passing by without anything being achieved. (No emotion, action, drama or atleast a noted frame)
- Music- First of all, there is no proper scene to highlight. I'm not expecting an Anirudh bgm, but take example for katappa saying "tappu chesav sivagami". It's a bundle of emotions, which came out of ordinary and the score lifted the scene. Honestly speaking, until very recently I realized just how much appreciation Keeravani deserves. Just think about it.
- A lot of scenes are half-baked where they don't even make sense.
Why karthi met aishwarya, if vikram already knows that she is planning a plot behind the kingdom.
What is the purpose of Jayaram character.
Absolutely unnecessary fights. No fight or action in the movie helped in building the story. As people say, the whole movie is about the characters and their interactions.
Prakash raj knowingly accepted the request to capture his son. Is he senseless? He says his body has aged, not his mind. This decision helped no one and nothing for plot.
Elephant rescue- Pandyas came to kill ponni even if their lives are at risk. But they got frightened and ran away. Even if they want to run, they can just kill ponni and run.
I agree that the books are magnificent and some are proud of it. Just because a great book is being used, great director made it, great actors performed, great musicians composed we shall not encourage literal garbage.

More politics, drama, sketches.. Should have been shown.. Unnecessary war scenes and songs have marred the whole show... Trisha n Aishwarya were stunning.. Their screen presence was commendable... Dubbing by Sunita n sravana were perfect..

i too felt that it can be made a series the problem is time limit constrain compressing 5 books to 2 parts, 6 hours movie made the conflicts unfinished most of the conflicts dosent have any depth could have made 3 parts and to explore more drama and depth for characters, and agree the writer convenience point at the karthi ladder scene . Some conversations could be prolong so that plots , politics and motives could be interesting and could build more hooking drama and intense bgm while plotting and political conversation could have added more spice ...... not judging Mani Ratnam Sir but what I expected from the legendary director Mani Ratnam sir
