winemakersacade... Racking canes are simply a siphon used to move wine from one container to another. Getting one started can be a challenge. Here's the best way to get a siphon started.
Thanks for making this video. I am new to this hobby and am trying to made mead for the first time. I practiced siphoning some ginger beer that I made without much success but am looking forward to trying this technique instead. All the best and God bless!
Excellent video. I bought a starter set which came with a racking cane and no information at all on how to use it. Heck, didn't even know it was called a racking cane until today. Also, I didn't realize that plastic cap was supposed to be ON. I thought it was for sanitary purposes when not using it. All in all, great video!
Thanks for clarifying this! I was having trouble starting a siphon but I had no idea that having bubbles in it would make it more difficult. Thanks again!
did you stop fermentation and make sure you killed all the yeast? i cant think of any reason other than gas still being produced....which is done by yeast.
I'm new to the hobby but it isn't hard is it? Suck and just use the first 50 mL of liquid to perfectly and adequately clean the end of the syphon pipe in a container off to the side.... no mouth parts touch the inner diameter of the pipe so only the outside needs cleaning, or, if you have a lower IQ and want to make things difficult for yourself then do what this guy does.👍
Or better yet, make a mouthpiece. Just find something that fits over or inside the siphon hose. Suck on the mouthpiece, and then remove it when the beer or wine flows.
Very much appreciated this video. It is by far the best explanation that I've come across online.
Thank you for clearing up the difference between this type of siphon and an auto-siphon.

Fill it with water from a running tap. Easy.

Thank you. Very clear video
Cheers Matt Damon!
I see your point on sanitation. I don't think stabilization issues later on are very likely though. A very small risk.
Great information. Thanks
Good stuff! Thanks for sharing.
Did I miss the sanitizing of the outside of the cane?
For example the small bottle filler could I use that to help start siphon?
I poured my first batch instead of using the syphon, two days later the bottle burst. What do you think happened ?

The racking cane can go inside the wine thief. Pumping the racking cane in the wine thief and the siphon will start.
Coulda been 30 seconds long.
you could increase the speed of the video if you want

I don’t see you making videos and helping people. Maybe your IQ is to low?
Gross. Microscopic organisms will get into your wine or beer and contaminate it. Low IQ indeed.
