They''ll pop when they get loaded up sometimes BUT the V-12 sure spins and starts smoking like it ought to now. Just keep squeezing the stop and grinding them limbs! And PLEASE don't let the snow stay on your semi-blue suede booties! Prayers, BLESSINGS and Hug Goomerish Younguns on a regular basis!
That is cold start hall of fame material there fella! Say Michigan has snow? Well heck yea it's Michigan! Would a generator and block heater do any good. That has got to be brutal on that engine.
Do you notice a big difference in wood processing in the winter vs summer what I mean is. Is it harder or Easyer chipping is quality better or worse or is it harder on equipment im sure it is harder on equipment in the winter because nothing really likes the cold things are more brittle and can't flex as easy oil is thicker but thanks for the cold start that was a pretty good show
Me thinks you guys have been playing Dr Diesel on that 3412 governor and have all the settings totaly Screwed up. The low and high idel setting is one of the simplest adjustments you can make on those hydra mechanical governors. The flames are just unburnt fuel that has blown out of the cylinders that aren't firing being ignited in the exhaust manifold by the cylinders that are firing. Injectors may be getting a bit sad making it hard to start cold as the diesel is thick and does not want to atomize. Cheers mate 🍻
John, are all chipper engines this hard to start or this one is just shot? You mentioned the fuel injector. Is that the only problem? If not, what would it take to start easily?
Diesels do not like the cold. If it’s below 30° you are not gonna have an easy time starting it usually, and if it is covered in snow you are likely going to get similar results. And the colder it is and the longer it sits Will determine how it starts. If it has been sitting for a couple of days and it has snowed and it’s like 15° Will commonly see a response like this on any diesel engine. However in John’s case not only does he have a cold issue to worry about he’s also got those other engine issues, which just makes things way more difficult. He’s got some work to do to it but that engine still has A long way to go before it’s “shot.”
Just some unburned fuel vapors making for a good show. You could in fact give it a little more rpm to see if you can get those cylinders firing a little quicker. The unburned fuel can accelerate wear by washing past the rings. The old two strokes where particularly sensitive to this.. hence the saying... "Mash your finger in the door and hold it to the floor"
You are wrong about the saying it’s because you had to flog the guts out of a Detroit and keep them near the red line ( 2500 for a 71 series Detroit )to get anywhere they weren’t ones to lug unlike a Gardner max tourque - 1100 rpm. Gardeners were known rfor reliability, durability, fuel efficiency and being easy to work on and they were cool runners.
Ruining the earth with all that stupid smoke. Ha. I don’t know why cold starts are so fascinating but they are. Ever consider a mic? I think the audio would be a lot nicer with a decent mike. Good video!
Diesel motors cold will run high rmp till they warm up u probably actually damaged that motor holding it low there are computers in place to take care of the motor
Somebody needs to learn about the use of starting fluid, after the engine starts. All the grey smoke is from one or two cylinders not firing. continuing to operate this way will almost guarantee a valve stuck in a guide and major failure.
Ahhhhhh, the smell of diesel in the morning. That's the kind of stuff that'll work up a good appetite

Now, that was a great 'cold start!' Don't know what the air temp was but the fireball was what made it so good!
Love the cold start snow is nice unless freezing roads in great video John
Love the cold starts John!
Nice cold start . I seen one of your guys chip truck going north past the shop that I work at. Stay safe out there

Great video buddy keep on rolling GOD BLESS.
Great video Mr John. We haven't had much of a winter this year.
LOVE THOSE COLD START'S
I'm OCD so I would never be able to leave at the end of the work day without first clearing the conveyor.
I see you know how to train your dragon. Cool flames.
I saw this on your Facebook page that was awesome!!
John, l can almost smell the unturned diesel!
It smells wonderful round here in the mornings!
Why does all the cool stuff always end up being expensive in the end??? Glad you were able to get it on film!😁

The Dragon has spoken !
That diesel is cold boy. She’s rattling
An environmentalists day was just ruined with this beautiful cold start, and I love it!😌😂
Looks more like an old steam engine. Flying Scotsman 😃😃
i wish nothing but the best for you and your new lady and kid's
What a startup, snow looks great but not easy to work with it around
I always give you a 👍. Don’t comment very often. That cold start sir, was impressive 👍👍👍👍
Thanks for watching
My old 3412 was cold blooded, you had to snuggle up and get her warmed up to get it to go
Ha ha go Cummins!

I’ll bet NASA can see that thing smokin from outer space.
Haha more than likely

That's interesting about the snow I thought it would help cool it down that much more if it was snow only no ice
Good ole 3412 😍
John, thanks for the video. When are you going to get a new chipper?
Fire in the hole! At least she started lol. Stay warm
Heck yeah man keep it up
she wasn't happy that's for sure. 😂
You need reversing fans to keep the snow and sawdust off. The cold weather is headed your way. Stay warm.
This is old school here!
Tired old mechanic what is that?
I think I'd invest in a propane powered block heater for that Cat on the chipper. So much easier on them to not have cold starts
our maple markets are good here in pa , wow !
hello there John. hope all is well with you and your family bud. stay safe out there buddy.
Last time I seen a flame like that was a skidder had a hole burned in a piston

@@alextheobserver1573 Thanks. Appreciated.
Raj Beekie you’re welcome.
@@alextheobserver1573 A modern Diesel will start just fine in the cold.

It looks cold there

Y'all have a good day and a good video...an all stay safe in the snow.... keep rolling
Is there glow plugs on the V12? Thanks for sharing

hey john you guys ever let stuff run cold nights ???
Looks like a tree stand in that tree behind the chipper
It is
Fire in the hole!!!!!!!
You know you have a backfire to idle check the fuel make sure no water in it.
CHIPPER NATION 😁👍
Still have the chains on the skidded?
One
@@ThatChipperGuy good deal, hope the ice won't be a huge problem for the rest of the winter for you.
maybe you can show the machines at work someday

Snow sucks!
would have been tits if you threw in like a few slomos of the backfire!
That's bad your poor baby
She likes it
Shouldn't he be back dragging that
No
The cat blades aren’t designed for back blading
