Like I get that white makes them stand out, but if the npcs are gonna be a mix of different skin tones, why can’t playable characters get some different skin tones? Dehya is already a thing, so hoyo clearly ain’t too scared of making a darker toned character

Reminder that these are not Latin Americans or modern day Africans. These are indigenous inspired people. The same people Hoyo referenced for the Hilichurl animations. If it wasn’t clear enough, they hold no respect for these cultures or these people. Why else would they mush them together into a melting pot of a region rather than having a singular focus like the other nations (minus Sumeru)?

Look, I'm Latino, so I get that Latin America has people of all types of skin tones. I see it in my own family, we're not all one color. But, this is based on pre-Columbian cultures. You know... Before the people who brought in the lighter skintones colonized us... It's also not just inspired by Latin America, it's also inspired by North Africa. It's just tiring at this point... I absolutely love this game, but I also have many criticisms of many parts of it.

I like genshin and I play it alot, but I gotta admit that this is a valid controversy. Sumeru is understandable since many middle-eastern folks are white, but Natlan is based on Mesoamerican culture and Mesoamericans are mainly black.

Xinyan yeah but it’s confirmed that Kaeya is white. He’s from Khaenriah and they’re said to be pale like the moon. The only reason Kaeya is as tanned as he is, is because he is outside A LOT. He’s supposed to be polar opposite of Diluc - Diluc works in the shadows while Kaeya is known for taking commissions that get him outside.
I actually prefer Kaeya that way - because he’s trying to leave his Khaenriah roots behind and be his own person. I think in his friendship quest, he confirms that he’d stand with Mondstadt as that’s his home now.
On top of the new trailer release for natlan today. Ororun is based on the Yoruba deity but hoyo made him look like that.

I looked up the names of these characters and apparently one character is of mayan origin, one is of native American origin and the other on is Mozambican. Yes, there are people that come in all races or colours from those countries, but when the game has a history of doing only the lighter skin characters it's disappointing and unnerving in some cases.
Also there are other chinese gatcha games that have darker skinned characters than even the npc in genshin.
Anyone who doesn't realise this is covertly racist, just doesn't care, doesn't realise because it barely affects them or is practically treating an entire company of adults like children that don't know any better.

Bro, most Mayan people in my country have dark skin. And really, really short. Not even exaggerating .They're not tan, they're dark. The ones that are taller or clearer (whiter) are mixed with Spanish/Latin. When Maya s intermarry with Spanish we no longer refer to them as Mayan, but rather called Mestizo. And of course there is terrible colorism within those communities.

I am not mad at the archon being white, I like her design and the reassembling towards Himeko (It did took me some to appreciate her design since that's why I said "only" at that time.) It is just my imagination about what possibly the Pyro Archon's appearance since for me, Natlan is the region I know the least about. You're blind. All Genshin white characters are pale as snow. The majority of Natlan characters are tanned. But because people are dishonest, they don't care about that, so long as the character is not black as a shade under the moon, they call everyone white and complain about it

"Taking symbolism from culture and flaunting it" isn't a real claim, now I'm not talking as a latin American about natlan but I will talk as a middle eastern about sumeru: the only people that are against Genshin's representation in sumeru are mostly Europeans and people who have nothing to do with it, but for us many players we found joy in the way Genshin "flaunts our cultural symbolism" because it's a way of representation, we found home in the food and the architecture the region and the characters and the way they act and the music to be our representation. Reducing culture to skin color IS the discrimination, and while I do think darker skin tones add more range their absence does not make the game necessarily racist

I’m all for more skin colours in the game but labelling a tan as a completely different ethnicity is strange to me.

I don’t really gaf about skin colors in Genshin and I agree, I love all of the new characters and their design but I wish they made them at least a little more tan if not brown/black, I hope they one day listen and make at least 1 character darker than usual, I doubt they’d listen though atp, most of the characters don’t even feel like they’re from a place like Natlan..I’m not a poc or from any culture that Natlan represents so I don’t know much about anything about it, if I said something wrong here feel free to correct about it.

I let my expectations rise even just an inch from the pits of hell after seeing Iansan and said nothing when the ‘need a hand’ trailer was released.
I kept telling myself there should be around 13-15 characters and the world is inspired by both Mesopotamia and North/West Africa so there’s no need to worry right?
However after seeing Olorun/Ororon (a character that clearly takes a lot from Yorùbá), how Iansan lost all her red undertones and how the five new characters pass the paper bag test with flying colours… I’m just done and have 0 hope that we will get another character as ‘dark’ as Isnsan.
Hoyo can honestly just take their grubby mitts out of my country at this point and leave us alone if they are so hell bent on using everything but the people. But hey, the archon turned out not to be dressed like a literal coloniser so at least I should be grateful about that

It's a fictional world with magic, it doesn't need to represent the world it was made in.
To be inspired is to be creative, to be creative is to have an imagination. An imagination is: the faculty or action of forming new ideas, or images or concepts of external objects not present to the senses.
This, people are conflating inspiration with representation.
As someone who studies a carrer related to art and is from latin america. Is true they take inspiration, but ...oof that still doesnt save genshin. Here for example you look at them and dont actually see the key aspects of what they took as inspiration. Theres a point where they transform it so much it doesnt connect with original concept. At that rate, is better to just do another thing. If is pre-colonization, almost everyone was tan or a bit more dark. If is post, there should be a good amount of mix. Is overall bad character desing choice and world building ^^'

But honestly if people want to to take the it’s “racist” route they should say colorist instead, as holy does do very well with all the culture stuff, so many things from Sumeru (if not the people) were so amazing, the music was similar to South Asian music and many stories matched up well, I adored it being a south Asian myself, I think it was things like that that matters more, the actual culture of it not just the skin (although I kinds really wanted to see dark skinned archon tbh it would be pretttyyyyy, i love all skin tones no hate lol) saying this as a brown skinned person

Yea..i may not understand the pain of black people..but as a brown indian, i quite frankly don't care. Yes chasing after white skin has been a problem here, and we are super mixed when it comes to colors, we have palest white indians to real dark black indians. However, i personally do not see a problem with representation in a game. I agree that representation is not exclusive to necessary sectors of life, and that all colours should be given the same privilege BUT at the same time, i hardly see this as someone that a lot of folks complain really need to complain about. At the end of the day, its a game. Some skin shades variety might have been nice to have, but i don't feel very radically about it. And no, the artists version of Black Nahida and other characters was horrible..at least the ones i saw. Atleast change the color of their eyes/hair/clothes to somewhat make it look cohesive, colors look different on different colours. Just repainting skin dark is not doing it.
