- / xrm150 I share great stuff on there!
This A-4 Skyhawk is flown by Dave Dollarhide at the 2014 Tico Warbird Airshow. I hope you enjoy this video! I have to say this is the video I am most proud of to date! I could not of done this without the help of my friend Dave Dollarhide and I hope you visit his CZcams channel Pennyskin. He has other great videos on there that I am sure you will like. This A-4 Skyhawks home is at the Valliant Air Command in Titusville, Fl and you can visit their website here www.vacwarbirds.org/
Here is some info about the A-4
The Douglas A-4 Skyhawk is a carrier-capable attack aircraft developed for the United States Navy and United States Marine Corps. The delta winged, single-engined Skyhawk was designed and produced by Douglas Aircraft Company, and later by McDonnell Douglas. It was originally designated the A4D under the U.S. Navy's pre-1962 designation system.
The Skyhawk is a light-weight aircraft with a maximum takeoff weight of 24,500 pounds (11,100 kg) and has a top speed of more than 600 miles per hour (970 km/h). The aircraft's five hardpoints support a variety of missiles, bombs and other munitions and was capable of delivering nuclear weapons using a low altitude bombing system and a "loft" delivery technique. The A-4 was originally powered by the Wright J65 turbojet engine; from the A-4E onwards, the Pratt & Whitney J52 was used.
Skyhawks played key roles in the Vietnam War, the Yom Kippur War, and the Falklands War. Fifty years after the aircraft's first flight, some of the nearly 3,000 produced remain in service with several air arms around the world, including from the Brazilian Navy's aircraft carrier, São Paulo.

Thumbs up for not adding music to the video, giving us viewers a chance to hear the engine.
Ahh, remember the good old days when American aviation contractors would make something that came in under budget, exceed expectations tremendously and eventually serve well beyond it's anticipated service life ...
It's what Douglas"s design team in general, and Ed Heinemann in particular, were legendary for.
Funny thing was, the Skyhawk achieve so much in its service, yet it never really achieve its original purpose - completely replace A-1 Skyraider, which was another aircraft designed by Ed Heinemann.
If only we still have someone like him nowaday.
PS - Ed Heinemann also play a part in designing the F-16, while McDonnell Douglas was the key designer of F-15 and F/A-18 (before Boeing came and ruin everything), which should explain why all of these exceed their expectations and become total badass despite being a very mundane and simple design.
One could only speculate what would happen if YF-23 were picked instead of YF-22.
There's a reason they're still flown by Red air contractors. Goofy lil things and not super maintenance friendly, but they're a damn good platform. This coming from me after 7 years on the F-16. Which in and of itself is a story of success beyond the design expectation, but that's a Story for another day.
@@2011SoxMD36 we still use them here in argentina, they are amazing planes
I was an Aviation Electrician on the A-4F at NAS Lemoore, CA. When I was with VA-127 (I'm dating myself if you know squadron designations), the Blue Angels took 6 of our best birds for their practice aircraft and left us with their old birds. I made the final deployment of VA-164 (Airwing 21) on CV-19 (USS Hancock), which was also decommissioned upon return to Alameda,CA. Good old birds. I miss them! I may not miss the flight deck too much, but the airplanes were great.
Did the cockpit look the same or is this one a little run down?
@@Xrm150 From what little I can see, the cockpit layout and hardware were very different. There were no "glass" instruments on our birds. The AJB-3 indicator (the ball) was centered above the distance and heading indicator. The clock was in the instrument panel, the wet compass was to the right of center on the windshield frame. This cockpit is much more modernized.
Thanks for the info!
@Xrm150 this cockpit looks amazing, when I was a PC on the M's everything was analog, no digital except for the HUD and ARBS bombing system.
I'm a pilot from argentina airforce we love it and all A4 is our heard !!

...the A-4 Skyhawk was my favorite aircraft to fly. It fit me like it was custom tailored, and it flew like a dream...
my grandpa flew that plane but got shot down in nam remians not covered

Flew A4 1971 at cherry pt MCAS. The greatest support A/C. Thanks for sharing. Oooohrah.
Respect for the Argentine pilots and their A4 Skyhawk on 1982, Guerra de Las Malvinas
Miss these, RNZAF use to fly these, loved the sight and sound!
I love the unique sound of the Skyhawk in flight. Cheers for showing with no music as well. Top effort
Thank you
Great video. Thanks for letting us hear the engine sound and not some music, makeing you feel like you are in it. I've heard the nickname for it was the "Scooter" cos it just kinda hums along, functional and very stable, but not very wild. Thanks for sharing
You're welcome
AGUANTE LA FUERZA AEREA ARGENTINA!
Ahhhh such a beautiful bird. Brings back many fond and not so fond memories. Thank you for your video. 👍👍
Have you flown one of these if i May ask? 🤔
That's an early A-4C I believe, with the short nose, like the Argentine AF used in the Falklands. A GREAT vid, loved the combo external, internal views. Gonna have one of these in DCS soon, so we shall see how close it is. Some great editing to.
Thank you very much =)
theyre making this for DCS?

Nolan the Simmer Last I heard the Licence to make it was too expensive.
saburu sakai yes sir, a Charlie model...I'm the guy who restored that aircraft... it took 8 years to get that from a pile of scrap!
Lucky pilot, that just looks like more fun than one person is allowed.
I grew up with this plane in the 70's .........awesome video thank you so much !
Man that brings back memories. VF43 Challengers. NAS Oceana. We kicked ass on F14s and F4s.
Thanks for sharing! Always love a chance to see the Skyhawk strut its stuff! I'm not too far from the Warbird Heritage Foundation, so I get to see them fly their A-4 now and then.
I was an avionics tech USMC 1980-1984 stationed at Cherry Point NC assigned to an A-4 squadron, great experience and I always look for the A-4 at airshows glad to see a few still flying today.
Fantastic, the Scooter! Thanks for sharing, and greets from the Netherlands!
Thanks for the post. A-4 FOR EVER!
b k You are very welcome and thank you for watching.
That was freakin cool! Now I gotta go back and watch in HD!
HD is a must =D
What's not to like about his awesome aerial demonstration...with cockpit views. Wow!!!
Glad you enjoyed it!
beautiful bird, beautiful work....
I like that little screen sound it makes when it's going really fast it didn't do that though before the J 52 is introduced because I seen another warbird model of the A4 D
I love how both the in-plane camera and ground camera are perfectly synced up, I found it fun guessing where the ground guys were in relation to that Skyhawk each time there was a pass..
It was just me recording over two days. I also look for myself =)
Just love the A4. Thank you for sharing.
Thanks for watching =D
Great video! Enjoyed every second!
nice video dude really awesome I always like to see some helmet cams from inside the cockpit of some jets
What lovely aircraft, faithful with easy and cheap maintenance in regard to maintenance of warplanes , in Malvinas war they were used at the maximum their capacity by flying very low, almost touching the sea or rubbing it, with insufficient fuel and with mission of bombing the english warship but not without first have to elude or evade all the british modern missile system.
Always loved the Scooters.
SALUDOS A LA RAF !!!! VIVA LA PATRIA CARAJOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!
Damn, I miss home...I always went to this airshow as a kid.
Awesome video Dave. Great job, thanks for sharing. Dick M.
Great video. Great ride! I want one when I hit the lotto.
+sarajanesmith1 go for the f-104 =D
I miss the Skyhawks with our RNZAF 🇳🇿
I was an airframe mechanic and plane captain on the A-4L. Fantastic aircraft! To think it cost $500,000.00 back in 1952.
+Mike Huff
Mike, I think you are in the ballpark on the cost. I worked on theMarine Corps A-4F Superfox. They cam off the production line around 1967 and cost right at a million per copy.
With inflation that would still only be 5.5 million in today's money... you can't even get two F-16 ENGINES for that. Douglas had some brains behind that operation for sure.
Brilliant - Thank U !!
Beautiful
A-4 Skyhawk, the best! Top from USA! Say no more!
*MalvinasArgentinas*
Ed Heinemman is the genius who designed this small ultra-agile, cheap to fix, super durable jet
Pretty sweet!!!
English pirates were most nockaut colonialists in their history in 1982.
The Argentine pilots, called Sky Hawks, flying these aircraft at 30 cm above the sea .......
Glory and honor to the Argentine fighter pilots
Also, Glory and honor to british troops making a landing and assault on fortified enemy and coming out victorious. Both sides had amazing warriors, not pirates but men with a strong sense of duty to their country.
It's a shame Argentina has no real Air Force just 11 old A4s While Chile has F16 and Peru Mig 29s
The only two countries I have lived in besides my home country is England and Argentina. Both have brave men and good people. Its time to put the past aside and make amends.
For Scooter George, that is a "C" model, the J65 did not need external power for start. Jenks
No Hay Quien Pueda!!!
I didn't know about this aircraft, I'm such an idiot! Now I've studied up a bit, and I luv it!
It was quite useful.
Fantastic video :))))

Nice landing
Hermoso
Amazing!!!

Love this airplane. Seems the yaw damp is a bit weak tho.

5 meters over the waves against the Royal Navy in the south atlantic, 1982.
Wow! You guys gave the Royal Navy hell! Port Stanley was bloody fight too!
And it has not been that long ,a couple years or so where I saw an ad recruiting to maintain these some where..maybe South America?
I think Brazil still flies ex-IAF A4s off the old Carrier they bought from France.
I remember the days playing Spectrum Holobyte's *MiG-29: Deadly Adversary of Falcon 3.0*
What was the most formidable enemy aircraft to engage in the sky? F-16? F-15? F-18?
None of those. It was _this_ plane. The A4 could easily out-turn my MiG-29 and release a hail of cannon shells to disintegrate my plane.
Great video. Looks like an A-4E. How are you getting electrical power? Whenever starting an A-4 ground air for the starter, like in the video, was needed. Also ground electric power, plugged into the recepticle on the port wing, just outboard and aft of the 20 mm gun.
That question is beyond me =) However the pilot has a CZcams channel. His channel name is Pennyskin Maybe he can answer it for you. =)
I think flying this plane would be a lot better than a cessna 152..Im sure a hell of a lot easier too with all that power available ?
Sounds exactly like and MD-80 these are just militarized PW JT8D’s called the J52’s
I love Jet Fighters. The agility.
I always wondered how the owners/pilots maintain these jets. Finding a mechanic that can work on them, parts, where they send the engines for service?
There's plenty of skilled hands with maintenance experience on types like these still around. Now the Sabre and the early MiGs that are still flying, those ones give me the same question. As for parts, there's a fair amount of common components from one airframe to another, a lot of your structural stuff can be shop fabricated IAW the manuals, and ultimately it's just like a classic car. If there's enough demand for the parts, i.e. enough still in flight, SOMEONE will produce those common high-failure or time-change items and make good money dishing them out.
neautiful jet and the payload capabilities are amazing for such a small airplane
FGM11 Dont forget a long and useful life span =)
+FGM11 Well it was designed to replaced the workhorse back then (A-1 Skyraider), the most ridiculous naval propeller attacker ever used in service.
Awesome video man.
Thank you!
Xrm150
A few weeks ago i saw an advertise in a website at GlobalPlaneSearch some jets for sale like A-4 Skyhawk,,
Is that the same one?!..I also saw T-33 Lockheed.
But there must not be some problems like a structure fatigue after many years or anything like that? and how do you manage the maintenance and overhaul if is private?
Saeed Sh there are 8 Ex RNZAF A-4K's that are currently flying for draken international in florida which they bought off us for only $7.9 million, they had been refitted with sophisticated electronics, including radar usually found in F-16s (project kahu), and standard Nato air-to-air refuelling equipment, just before we grounded them, we were suppose to be re-equipped with F-16 in 2002 but our government in their wisdom disbanded our attack wing in our airforce, now we just have a glorified coast guard!
pramboy zealand I see those A-4s quite often. I live in Lakeland, FL....Home of Draken International =D
Hope your enjoying them! Nice touch by draken to keep their RNZAF colours, the only fast jets we see now is when RAAF Super Hornets come over for air shows or joint operations.
K delicia es volar !!
I bet if a Tanker was available The Pilot would want to just keep on Flying WoW! A True Hot Rod!
Nice video, thanks for not adding any music either.
Do they utilize yaw dampers? Just asking
Muy buen avión
Does it always need a GPU for start up?
It's been along time but I believe that is a C or E model, straight refuel probe. I believe that the E model was the first to have the curved probe. The C model only had three Pylons and the E went to five. Looking more like a C model, I could be wrong.
Nice !! 🍺 😎 👍
Glad you enjoyed it 😊
Can any one make a Hawker Hunter video too ?
Is this the same Dave Dollarhide that was on the Forrestal during the fire?
Quite possible.
I wonder how these would fare in modern combat with upgrades in avionics and engines?
+Ron Tate there is a company here that had done just that. It's called Drakken international. The upgraded them to have same avionics as f-16s for aggressor training.
Hud?
Didn't Jester from top gun use an A4?
Andrew C. Yep and viper as well.

You can get models of them online. But I doubt that you could find one in a store.
She doesn't want a model. She wants the real thing.
SanFranciscoBay Well if you're really rich you can buy one on the surplus market...........................
