  • One of the flymphs created by Pete Hidy, it is not quite a nymph or a dry fly. This pattern can be fished as a dry but is typically most effective just under the surface. Tie it with our without a gold rib.
    Hook: #12-16 wet fly
    Thread: Red
    Tail: Brown hackle fibers
    Body: Hare's mask in dubbing loop
    Hackle: Brown or furnace hen

    Savage Flies is a project with the mission of encouraging and teaching fly tying to as many people as possible. The channel is named after one of my western Maryland homewaters, the Savage River. I've been uploading at least three new videos a week (usually Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday).
    Thanks for stopping by. Please let me know in the comments if you have any tying tips you would like to share or if you have any patterns you would like to see tied here.

    I like the dubbing loop and how it turned out. Leaving a red thread tag for a rib might work nicely also. Thank Matt.

    • @SavageFlies
      @SavageFlies  Před 3 lety

      That's actually a great idea Lee. We could have dubbed this with a regular dubbing noodle (no loop), and just wrapped a tag up through it to make it stronger and give some of the red color. And that might make it a bit easier to tie. I wish I had thought of that!

    I think, in essence, what Hidy called a 'flymph' is what today is generally referred to today as an 'emerger.' Thanks for another fine video.

    • @SavageFlies
      @SavageFlies  Před 3 lety +1

      Yep, I agree Peter! That's the same thing Lyle said in the book. Although I typically think of emergers sitting right up in the surface film, and as kind of a semi-fry fly... I've probably been fishing them wrong for years anyway. :-)

    @michaelmerlino6753 Před 3 lety

    Two things;flymphs are perfect for high stick drifts(Leisrnring lift)controlling the depth.If yo look at old English flies the sparce dubbing was used for the thread to show through helping with the color illusion of the body.

    "it's fished just under the surface."
    What is the difference between a flymph and a wet fly, please?

    • @SavageFlies
      @SavageFlies  Před 3 lety

      Good question Dave. Think of a dry fly that you fish completely on the surface, and you want it to drift naturally on top (no drag). A flymph you might want to fish just like this, but slightly under the surface. Kind of like you would fish an emerger too. Now you *can* fish some wet flies like this as well. But lots of wet flies you fish deeper, and with a little action. For example, you might cast a wet fly in fast water, directly across from where you're standing, let it sink and dead drift downstream until you get a tight line and then let it swing up and in. That's kind of an "active" retrieve. And lots of times that's when you'll get the take with a wet fly... at the end of the drift when it looks like an insect swimming toward the surface. I hope this helps!

    • @SavageFlies
