There are 155 different species of voles in the world. They’re small with brownish or grayish fur, chunky bodies, short tails, and feed primarily on grasses along with fruits and nuts. They have excellent burrowing skills with their underground networks being used for food storage, raising offspring, and as a places to sleep. Most voles are active both day and night yet are very hard to find. They’re known for their monogamous mating with both parents actively participating in the caring of their young. Female voles can give birth to as many as 6 litters of 4 to 5 babies a year.
There’s many types of voles. In North America, the prairie, the woodland, and the meadow voles are found in pastures, orchards, and fields.The montane vole is found in higher terrains and have dense fur to withstand cold temperatures. Water voles are strong swimmers with waterproof fur that live near freshwater streams and marshes. The bank vole throughout Eurasia can be found in mixed woodlands and forests.
