I love a saying in another movie, because I always been outgoing and my best friend has always been shy. But the movie basically said the reason why that person is best friends with you, is because she see’s part of her personality in you. My friend has a shine she just shows it to the people that matter most, and I see it all the time.
Seriously I don't think Dex is a jerk. Both Dex and Rachel have the same shy and reserved personality (as opposed to Darcy) and that's why they cherish their friendship so much. If you ever had a feeling for your bestfriend I can assure you it's much more than just about 'stop being a coward and confess your feeling', because this is real life and YES most of the times your bestfriend doesn't reciprocate the feeling! And it sucks when such a precious friendship gets awkward and gone forever.

Okay I wasn't going to comment, but after looking at some of the pre-existing comments, specifically the ones saying that Dex is a jerk, I had to say something. First, I will agree that Dex shouldn't have started dating Darcy in the first place, but if you have read the book you would know not only did she reject him outside of the bar 7 years ago and when he tried to walk her to her dorm when they were studying, but she also was pining after one guy and started dating someone else for a large portion of their time in law school. Granted she didn't realize that Dex liked her back, but that was because she didn't think she was pretty enough for him to want to be more than friends. Then when she introduced him to Darcy and Darcy tried to set them up she still pushed him away and told him that he should date Darcy because she saw Darcy as the type of girl that he should be with. So in his defense he was rejected so many times by her that he decided to try and move on. It's also not like he didn't love Darcy because he did, he just also knew there was something missing, but felt pressured by his father to propose and then found that missing thing in his relationship with Rachel. Second, Darcy also cheated on him with his best man and got pregnant, so she is just as bad as he is, if not worse because she wasn't in love with Marcus whereas Dex was in love with Rachel. Third, the book isn't about the cheating or the relationships it's about learning to put yourself first and stop letting people walk all over you. Sorry for this long winded rant, but this book is sacred territory to me because I can really identify with this message and with Rachel's journey. I literally have all my favorite parts doggy-eared and I've read it many times.

I’ve never read the books but this film always stuck with me. Books are always better for some reason. Dex was a way better friend to Rachel than Darcy. He remembered her birthday, on her actual birthday, was there for her in whatever situation he could be & even tried to be when he couldn’t be. I feel like as handsome as he is, Dex was also kind of an introvert & the whole time he needed validation from Rachel that she felt the same way or else he wouldn’t dump Darcy it seemed like. It wasn’t until it was the eleventh hour that Rachel finally got that boost of confidence & fear of losing him forever that she finally spoke up & told him what she wanted. I just love Dex so much, not because he’s absolutely gorgeous, but because he’s a genuine gentlemen & a sweetheart & you could tell throughout the whole film that he was absolutely in love with Rachel the whole time. Even at the very beginning when you had no idea who the characters even were yet.

A lot of people just completely didn't get the point of the movie. Dex was not a jerk in this movie. Did you all not see the scene where they were having dinner and his mom looked at him and that's when she realized he wasn't happy. Obviously they talked and I thought that this conversation should have been in the movie. So the conversation was implied that's when Dex broke free it was after that he left darcy and went for Rachel fully. Rachel was too pathetic no self esteem and darcy doormat. She never called out darcy on her behaviour and was content to live in her shadow. She loved Dex always had. Darcy was never a friend to rachel, she had rachel in her life because somehow rachel made her feel important. Darcy was selfish, and the worst of them all. She didn't love Dex and she knew rachel liked him. Darcy deserved what she got. Two things this movie needed that conversation with Dex and his mom, and a scene where rachel really gave darcy what she had coming to her. All that said one of the best romantic movie out there I wish they would make part two already

Darcy is also obviously too addicted to Rachel and Rachel is like a "mother person" to her. So this movie isn't really something "high school" style cheating, you really have to think this movie psychologically. Like in the end of the movie Rachel has first time courage to say "no" to Darcy. Darcy is so wrong friend for Rachel. It even isn't true friendship between them. In my opinion the reason why Rachel and Dex didn't confess their feelings back in the school, was because they were still insecure about their feelings and wanted to take it slowly. So when Darcy suggested to Rachel to go out with Dex she gets a little scared and says "no" right away. Of course Dex gets a feeling like Rachel wants truly be just friends with him. Sorry if I wrote too much. I just love this movie, and it's just something that can happen in real life.

I know, I was thinking the same thing. That wasn't accurate guy behavior. No normal, single, straight guy who's friends with a hot, single female that he's in love with would hold back and not make a move and/or let her know at some point. He wouldn't just sit around silently pining away for her, all hesitant and passive. Especially a guy who's made it into law school. That personality profile alone is somebody who's a go-getter. And especially a guy who looks like Dex. In reality guys that hot know they're hot. Even if they're nice and not cocky, trust me, they still know that they can get girls. They've had girls throwing themselves at them their whole life, and that conditions them to become confident. The author of the book this was based on was obviously a woman writing some sort of fantasy for herself, but which doesn't accurately reflect AT all how guys really are, how people really are in general, and how life actually works.

I think the one thing most people missed in this movie was the fact that Dex was doing what his father wanted him to do - law...and he didn't want to upset his mother, who was emotionally crippled...he loved Rachel, but she wasn't what his father wanted in a wife for him. He wouldn't just sit around silently pining away for her, all hesitant and passive. Especially a guy who's made it into law school. That personality profile alone is somebody who's a go-getter. And especially a guy who looks like Dex. In reality guys that hot know they're hot. Even if they're nice and not cocky, trust me, they still know that they can get girls. They've had girls throwing themselves at them their whole life, and that conditions them to become confident. The author of the book this was based on was obviously a woman writing some sort of fantasy for herself, but which doesn't accurately reflect AT all how guys really are, how people really are in general, and how life actually works.

Plus I also agree with your other points, no guy would just wait on the girl to make the first move especially if his thought process is "you are all I ever think about". To quote a line from another movie Ginnifer Goodwin stars in "if a guy wants to be with a girl he will make it happen, no matter what"

I think the one thing most people missed in this movie was the fact that Dex was doing what his father wanted him to do - law...and he didn't want to upset his mother, who was emotionally crippled...he loved Rachel, but she wasn't what his father wanted in a wife for him. He needed to marry someone in his own social circle to satisfy the father.......sad all the way around. Since watching this movie I have sworn off all Kate Hudson movies....just turned me off completely.........
