I would say Turn Left because it is an episode where Donna doesn't know the Doctor, and I think that is the Donna we're going to see at the beginning of the specials.

In the US, we call that a Bottle Episode. Usually confined to one set, and explores the characters trapped within. It can often be found when a budget is stretched to the limit (usually prior to a Big Budget Episode/Finale), or as was the case with Midnight, scheduling issues with the main cast requiring them to "split up" for an episode or two. A lot of "winter travel/car trouble = stuck in a diner" eps are like this, confining two bickering cast hashing out their issues in a confined space while the rest await their delayed arrival.

Its funny how (for the most part) a Bottle Episode proves the old adage of "necessity is the mother of invention" - well in a roundabout way - in that budget constraints or whatever inadvertently creates what can sometimes be the best episodes, where we get to see the actors and writers really honing in on their craft without the whizz bang crash, just people in a room, bringing some drama. Much better than the cliché budget savers of 'clips episodes'.

The director who filmed David Tennant’s part of thirteens regeneration said she was excited to see the theories people had about their clothes changing which makes me think there is a big fancy reason for the clothes changing and not just “David’s a man and should be in man clothing”
I think we all expected that it would get a canonical explanation, the way his clothes burned off was strange too , I think it had something to do with what the master had done to 13 but I could be wrong. I think there’s a gotta be an explanation as to why David is 14 and looks older.
I am rewatching NuWho with my mom, who has only seen series 12 and 13, and she loved Midnight. That was easily her favorite episode in the first 4 series.
The only thing I would suggest is watching the Reconstruction that is out there (along with the one episode that's available) of the Celestial Toymaker, since it's the only TV show story with the Toymaker. There are audio adventures with him, but this one was the one TV adventure.
Very much agreed - we almost had that as an honourable mention. So frustrating that it's mostly missing but like you say, even just watching the one surviving episode is great homework!
Those last words of the dalek as the doctor gets in his tardis have been ringing in my ears since the first time I heard it: "One will still die." Add the doctor in the trailer saying "I don't know if I can save you this time" and it's pretty obvious that Donna is going to save the universe, and the doctor, in a way reminiscent of River in the library 💞
I was thinking more the opposite to be honest, she’ll probably have to do something that’ll cost her her life, but The Doctor will sacrifice himself to save her, forcing himself to regenerate. Last time he regenerated he’d just lost her and was full of sadness and regret over it. The whole “I don’t want to go” might have been because he felt he hadn’t done enough to save her, and that’s why his face has come back, because Donna is in danger. So rather than not wanting to go like End of Time, I’d think we’ll see him accept that his time is up, and he’s come back to find peace with the one massive regret he has from having that face.
I would recommend watching if you are in the UK, watching BBC children in need as there will be a 5 minute minisode during it, with David Tennant as the fourteenth doctor, the first bit of 14th content in over a year
I've only just realized after you mentioned the unusual nature of the last generation that it could be a side effect of the earlier Master's forced regeneration of the thirteenth Doctor!
Some great episodes on this list. Midnight and Turn Left are up there with Blink as the best examples of what the revamp of this show can do/be. Classic Sci-Fi ideas turned up to an 11!

really the brig has met TEN doctors, and except for 9th it was actually Nicolas Courtney. He has met 6 of the 7 classic doctors, all 7 if you count the abomination thsat is dimentions in time. Kate ahs met, 10,11,12,13, and war (and the curator if you count big finish) that 5or6 and opposerd to 6 or 10, not even close!!!

I always wonder why they didn't just get Paul McGann in for Day of the Doctor rather than inventing a whole new Doctor. Don't get me wrong, I love John Hurt and he made for an amazing "war" Doctor but it did kind of confuse things, making it so the 9th, 10th, 11th (etc) were technically the 10th, 11th, 12th (etc). Plus, they literally got McGann for a short, "Night of the Doctor" for the celebrations and lead up to the 50th. Why didn't they just use him in the actual thing? It would have made so much more sense but oh well. Also, a side note, I can't believe they had Billie Piper in it and her not play Rose! David and Billie were literally on screen together and they don't interact once. I don't see why they bothered putting her in it. All in all, the 50th anniversary was pretty cool for what it was. I might be in the minority here but after the whole hype leading up to it all and finally watching the episode, it felt minorly disappointing imo. I think I'm more excited for the 60th despite it, most likely, not being a multi doctor story. I think the concept behind it is really selling it for me. Plus, Donna is my favourite companion of the whole show so far so the fact that she is going to be in three whole specials with her Doctor as well is mind blowing.
I think it would be good to rewatch some of the classic era episodes, especially the ones involving the celestial toymaker. New who wise I think good episodes to rewatch would be The Runaway Bride and series 4 just to recap and get up to date with the doctor and donna's journey together. I'm going to rewatch The Day of the Doctor just for the fun of it but Rose and The Eleventh Hour would be great episodes to rewatch too! So excited for the 60th anniversary specials! i think with what little we've seen on Wild Blue Yonder, i expect that special to be almost if not more wild than Midnight, my mind goes to that clip from the trailer where the Doctor seems under stress banging his hands against the wall
In preparation for the 60th anniversary I watched seasons 1-13 of the revival era. Also I noticed that in Season 12 the Celestial Toymaker is mentioned. Though I haven’t haven’t watched any of the classic era of Doctor who.

As someone who stopped watching mid-season 6 and already knows the basics, it’s been recommended to me to also watch Face the Raven, Heaven Sent, and Hell Bent to get an idea of what is going on with Gallifrey. Also The Timeless Child to know what the current lore on the Doctor is (also to understand what everyone’s so upset about, lol).
Sure if you wanna wait another 2-3 months before watching it because if you do the math, its physically impossible to do that in the timeframe before the 60th

So its Wednesday evening now, get started and you can watch them all with 2 days to spare before next Saturday! Just no sleep and quit your job but thats a reasonable sacrifice (oh and you must eat, drink and go toilet while watching)!
Haven't watched a lot of doctor who for a good while as i have had other things coming up, new things to watch plus my health have not been that good lately so might take the chance to watch some who again. Genesis of the daleks will be first priority for me as that has always been my favourite doctor who story with my favourite doctor

Episodes to watch before the 60th anniversary. Just ignore the first 40 years and watch the lacklustre reboot. No one seems to care about the series distant past.
May be in a minority but RTD isn't my fave writer I couldn't fully connect to his first era the way others did it took me until 2010 to get obsessed with what Doctor Who is capable of . I'm not keen on the domestic soapy kitchen sink drama approach or childish approach to monsters. 2010-2017 is my era overall....Pertwee and early tom baker being the other one and dare I say Whittaker's I got caught up in a lot moreso ...but there we are 💙💙
Erm.... No classic who, Whoculture??? No Power or Genesis of the Daleks, Tomb of the Cybermen, three doctors, Earthshock, Remembrance of the Daleks. All of which a very important stories in who mythos. while Day of the Doctor was really good, it is still not on par with the likes of the 3 doctors, genesis or power. Day of the Doctor really only celebrated the new who era.
They have to pander to the TikTok Generation. Classic Who is too much for them to comprehend large episodes requiring attention - sadly not for TikTok brains. Note not all NuWho fans are like this but there are many.
The only episode missing from this list is the celestial toy maker it’s by know means the greatest episode ever but it shows u who this character is and how dangerous he is

I'd add 'Fires of Pompeii' and 'the girl who died', just for the significance of something Donna says impacting the face of a future regeneration.

Haven't watched a lot of doctor who for a good while as i have had other things coming up, new things to watch plus my health have not been that good lately so might take the chance to watch some who again. Genesis of the daleks will be first priority for me as that has always been my favourite doctor who story with my favourite doctor

Episodes to watch before the 60th anniversary. Just ignore the first 40 years and watch the lacklustre reboot. No one seems to care about the series distant past.

May be in a minority but RTD isn't my fave writer I couldn't fully connect to his first era the way others did it took me until 2010 to get obsessed with what Doctor Who is capable of . I'm not keen on the domestic soapy kitchen sink drama approach or childish approach to monsters. 2010-2017 is my era overall....Pertwee and early tom baker being the other one and dare I say Whittaker's I got caught up in a lot moreso ...but there we are 💙💙

Erm.... No classic who, Whoculture??? No Power or Genesis of the Daleks, Tomb of the Cybermen, three doctors, Earthshock, Remembrance of the Daleks. All of which a very important stories in who mythos. while Day of the Doctor was really good, it is still not on par with the likes of the 3 doctors, genesis or power. Day of the Doctor really only celebrated the new who era.
They have to pander to the TikTok Generation. Classic Who is too much for them to comprehend large episodes requiring attention - sadly not for TikTok brains. Note not all NuWho fans are like this but there are many.
