  • These cupcakes were fun to make! The orange color faded quite a bit after cure, but the fragrance scent stayed nice and strong. #coldprocesssoap #cpsoap #soap
    Here is my Frosting recipe:
    16 oz Coconut oil
    3 oz Shea butter
    6.5 oz Olive oil
    6.5 oz Rice Bran oil
    4.7 oz Lye w/ silk & sodium lactate added
    9 oz distilled Water

    Thank you for the press and seal tip! My daughter wants to make cupcake soaps for her cousins for Christmas and that is a great piping tip. The farmers market packaging is a great idea too! They look so real. Satsuma Orange is one of my favorite scents too.

    While watching you pour the bases, I had a momentary panic: you way over filled them when they bake, they will fall out of the liners!
    Then I remembered it was soap! That is what I get for baking before watching this video! Lol!

    Ellen, I got your soap a few days ago. They look lovely and perform fabulously! The silk really adds to the feel and slip. My soaps are vegan so I can't use it, but I know now why people do. You have set a standard. 😊

      Thank you so much! I'm using Mulberry Top Silk in a few bars now, which is a vegan option for silk.. I'm really liking how it feels, and it's easy to work with too😉

    This looks like a great idea as opposed to whipping with a stand mixer(i don't have one) It does look a little on the thin side though for using a star tip. What would you recommend to thicken this recipe a little more, I'm thinking the shea butter could be the reason for the thinner batter. Maybe use cocoa butter instead? Thank you!!

      If you just wait a bit, the batter will thicken

    Hi Ellen. Is the soap calculator accurate. I put the amounts you said for water you said 9 oz. the soap cal. Said 12.16 of water. Which one is correct. Thanks so much I love your videos.

      I do a heavy water discount, you can totally go with the higher water amount, it will be slower moving.

    How much silk and sodium lactate do you add to the lye? Is it 4.7oz of lye and then the addition of silk and sodium lactate added to that? Thank you!

      Just a very small pinch of silk fibers, and sodium lactate at a rate of 1 tsp per lb of oils

    Is there a substitute for rice bran oil in the soap frosting?

      If you change any of the oils, you'll need to run the numbers thru soap calc. But you can replace it with any good liquid oil.

      If you frost them as soon as they get a bit firm, it sticks perfectly.

    HOW much of the silk and sodium lactate did you add to the lye? missed that Ellen. :) ALSO u didnt put a link for the recyclable cups

      I use sodium lactate at a rate of 1 tsp per lb of oils, and the silk is so light it's hard to measure, it's about a small cotton ball size. The silicone muffin cups are listed bellow.

    Hi! Just wondering about the sodium lactate. Since the tops are not coming out of a mold, do you really need the sodium lactate? Have you noticed a benefit for cupcake tops?

      That's a good question. I don't think it would be super necessary, since you aren't technically unmolding it...

      @@EllenRuthSoap That's what I was thinking. My fear of using the sodium lactate with the tops is that it would set up quicker. I'm not sure if that's true but I've had so many issues with my soap setting up too quick before I get it piped. It seems to go from perfect to hard rather quickly. I may be over mixing initially. 😬

    Hi Ellen, I have been wondering, do you just wash the lye active soap down the drain or do you wait until the next day to wash all your dishes? We live on a septic, not sure if you do too, but I’ve been wasting so many paper towels wiping down everything to spare my septic and I’m wondering if there is a better way. Thanks in advance!

      I do try to scrape my pitchers out really well, and then I do my dishes... I know several soapers that do the paper towel wipe, and it does take a lot of towels, and those that leave the pitchers until they turn to soap... I'm on septic and haven't had any issues yet (and it's been a good while)...

    How much soap will this frosting cover? Also can you change out ingredients for the frosting ? Can u give advice how to formulate your own frostings ?

      It really depends on what you're frosting, when I'm doing cupcakes I like to have as much frosting as batter... I recommend getting familiar with a good soap calculator for formulations.

      @@Doodle._.KitKat The soap batter will thicken as it's getting hard, you pipe when it's the thickness of frosting, before it gets too hard.
