I personally think about it kind of like this; Obito was groomed into his role from childhood and when he finally seemingly managed to come to grips with his talents and such, he lost everything and refused to persist in the same world where that sort of tragedy is possible, all while under the impression that he's doing the right thing. He essentially just became Madara, the masked man. Obito disappeared long before the war and only reemerged when he chose to fight and die to save those around him. Naruto calling him "the coolest guy" is absolutely fucking wild though, I will say.
Think of it like the difference between Anakin Skywalker and Darth Vader.

Obito got brainwashed by Madara, he was very young back then so he didn't really question his words. Also the scene where he got the perfect timing to see Rin being killed by Kakashi was also planned by Madara and Zetsu for Obito to see, just to descend him into madness, making him want to throw away this world. So while of course we shouldn't completely forgive him, he killed way too many people during his life, but knowing his POV, I think it's a case of mitigating circumstances.

first we need to understand what Forgiveness means, it's not to forgive all the past actions and act like nothing bad happen but to Atone for the sins that were committed.
Life is full of POSSIBILITIES while death is FINAL,
and Obito didn't do that for getting laid by rin, Not only he say it to kakashi but also go and watch or read(chapter 651) the Obito's thoughts and his Ideal world, In it he isn't on Honeymoon with Rin but becoming Hokage with Kakash as his Right hand and created a better world.
Obito done all those think cuz that was the only option and they were like scarifices for greater goods(like trolley problem 1 get's killed for 3 and here '000s for entire world)
and it's not like he ever saw something good after that incident, all the thing happen to Nagato wasn't Obito's plan, Naruto being treated like shit wasn't Obito's doing.
