    The National Student Financial Aid Scheme, better known as NSFAS, is a vital lifeline for students in need of financial assistance. It is funded by government and manages the billions of rands that are distributed to students to cover their fees, books, accommodation, and even their meals. Now it’s under threat. Years of mismanagement and questionable financial decisions inside the organisation have left hundreds of thousands of students in the lurch. Many of the problems can be traced back to a new payment system that allows service providers to charge high service fees. Carte Blanche examines how proximity to high-ranking NSFAS officials has benefitted one of these service providers.

    DMV discriminates against the working class citizens whose children are to lay full tuition fees for Higher education . Imagine just because you were not born of a family member who was not politically active but sustained an education and is paid higher than R350 000. Just because they earn more doesn’t mean they don’t succumb to the economic bondages that the Apartheid legacy has left behind. This must be discriminatory on the basis of birth. So certain families receive free higher education by relation to political veterans which compromises mostly of politicians who at times earn higher salaries that civil servants who hold position in the upper levels of government.
    These people are taxed crazy amounts to pay for political veterans children fees and NSFAS whilst they are deprived from using the same scheme to take the children to school. This means they must suffer the burdens of educating children who aren’t theirs whilst their own struggle and are at times unable to attend university. It’s unfair and inconsiderate by the government and by the Minister of Higher Education.

    @edition_subject Před měsícem +3

    At times you find that the children of civil servants will attend cheaper Universities made special for Black students during Apartheid because they can never afford to sustain a standard of living as well as pay tuition fees for Higher Education at the bestowed white institutions in South Africa whilst they serve the state dedicated to transitional constitutionality. How can we say the constitution is transitional when civil servants lack benefits to take their own children to Universities that they can actually qualify to get into just because they earn more than a R 29 000 a month *before tax* . This means they must never be able to obtain certain things . This may lead to patrimonial loss because cars and homes are sold by civil servants so that they can take their children to school. People move from areas they could previously afford to other areas so they can simply afford school fees. Keep in mind that civil servants are prohibited from starting their own businesses when they are in financial need. They are also not allowed to take private donations.
    Guess what that leads to? Corruption because parents can’t stand to watch their own children excluded from schools because they can’t afford to clear the fees in time for registration into another year to further their studies.
    Imagine the amounts of money these civil servants must pay for medical aid, groceries, a home, electricity, water, school fees, transport, books , clothes residence at University and in special cases pocket money for their children and those other children whom they are educating in High Schools and Primary schools , ensuring that relatives are eating back home and have essential resources and access to healthcare. Black tax is heavily in fashion in post-Apartheid South Africa. Whilst Mk veterans and politicians are taking their children whose fees are paid by the state to overseas trips and buy them fancy cars that even civil servants can’t afford.

Also, I was trying to get ahold of nfsas for months, without any feedback. So, it's difficult to know what is the ongoing balance owed, since we only receive statements on request (and no one is responding to emails), yet I am sure interest is still being charged - which I feel is unfair.

    Please investigate why service providers who provide off-campus student accommodation and services to tens of thousands of students in the Eastern cape have not been paid? It's June, and most providers received less than 30% of their invoice to date!

    NSFAS is a means for students to waste money too. On 3 occasions I was approached by Varsity students with the NSFAS card. They offered to pay for my groceries at PNP. I denied this request. On the 3rd occasion, I threatened to call the store manager and the student disappeared. If they are successful, they go to the liquor store and buy alcohol and cigarettes with the education funding. Please investigate because NSFAS and department of education ignored me.
