Sage (Breville) Barista Express Impress - How to run a cleaning cycle (backflushing).

- This is my seventh video in my series on the new Barista Express Impress from Sage/Breville, and in this one I'm demonstrating backflushing, what they refer to as a cleaning cycle.
As I mention in the video, you'll be prompted to do this when the clean/descale exclamation light is flashing, if that light is solid this indicates a descale is required. Descaling video coming soon, in the meantime:
To descale your Barista express impress:
Remove the water filter from the water tank if there is one installed.
Dissolve the sachet of cleaning solution in 1L of water, you can either do this directly in the water tank or do it in a separate container and then pour into the tank, and put the tank back in place.
Place as big a container as you can fit, onto the drip tray ensuring the steam wand is also positioned over this. Ideally, this should be at least one litre in capacity, if not it's not a big deal you'll just swap it over during the process of descaling the steam wand and hot water spout. You'll use 2L of water in the rinse phase but it's no problem to empty the container half way through.
Turn the machine off, press and hold the three buttons together (both shot buttons and the power button) for about 5 seconds, and once the machine as heated up it will illuminate the power button, double shot button, clean/descale light and hot water/steam light.
With the water tank in place, containing the 1 litre of water with descale solution dissolved, press the double shot button to start the process.
The group will be descaled first, this will take about 25 seconds, and there's a beep to let you know this has finished, at this point turn the steam/water dial towards the front of the machine, towards the steam icon. The steam wand will be descaled (about 13 seconds) and then will just stop, there's no beep.
When it stops, simply turn the steam/water dial towards the back of the machine, towards the water icon, and the hot water path and spout will be descaled, this takes about 8 seconds.
At this point just press the 2 cup button again to start the process again starting with the group, and just keep repeating this process until you run out of water.
At this point, fill the water tank to the max, and repeat this process again with clean water to rinse, until the entire tank is emptied.
Press the power button to quit the descale process.
Done.

Thanks for this down to earth tutorial.
As a long time professional barista I did a manual clean cycle and couldn't work out why the light wouldn't stop flashing 😂
Every time I want to clean my machine or learn new things about it, I came here 😊 thank you so much! 🙏
Thank you. Clear instructions and useful.
Glad you found my post helpful :-)
Best one ever 😊
Thank you so much for this!
Glad I can help :-)
Thanks for this helpful video.
Thanks :-)
My fingernails can grow itself back, but my baskets won't..So I'll stick to using my nails to remove 'em 🤣
Sage tried to tell me my machine is having issues when I asked them why water wasnt coming through the bottom of the portafilter. Thank god i checked this video out 😂
Good guide 👍
Ta :-)
Thanks a lot!
Thank you
Hello, thanks for this video. One quick question please. I suppose the backflush light comes on after a number of servings (times you click 1 dose or 2 doses). I guess it counts also when we backflush with water after each serving to clean the head and the portafilter right?
I almost do the same cleaning but I run a rinse with no portafilter in so the water can take some coffe grinds of the water difusion screen (the one closets to the coffe when brewing) as there is always coffe grinds on it and I don't want that to go back into the machine and then I run the backflush cleaning with tablett and after that I take the portafilter away and clean it and run run a single shot of water to get the last cleaning cemicals out and wipe the water diffuser scren and then insert the portafilter an run a backflus rinse.
Hi, did you ever get round to doing a descaling video?
Hey kev, got my Express impress yesterday and unpacked everything. Tried my first flat white with the sage and it worked somehow, also the dial in took very long but I think I found a good level of espresso.
I was wondering if you can make a video of the cleaning process of the impress after you’ve done with making your coffee. Beside The cleaning cycle , which is not for everyday I think. So I want to see what somebody else is doing when turning off and cleaning. Im afraid of missing some step in the end.
Thanks and keep going 💯💪🏼
Hi Alex,
That's a great idea, I will film that, in the mean time on a daily basis I'd recommend purging hot water through the group then wiping the shower screen with a damp cloth, and making sure the steam wand is nice and clean.
Cheers
Kev
@@Coffee_Kev thanks a lot 🙏🏼 Im really looking forward to see this video then.
Do you think the sea salt edition will turn yellow colour in the sun
I got freaked out seeing that red light flashing I thought there was a mechanical fault or something haha. Thanks for your help
Glad my video helped Jim :-)
7:22 Morning. I have a Breville Express Impress which is about 6 months old.
Watching your backwash video it says it took 5 minutes. Whenever I do mine it only takes about 30 seconds. Am l doing something wrong or is this ok.
Cheers Danny.
Kev, teach us how to change the steaming lever to something more aesthetic
What about the cycle where you have to insert descaler to the water at the back?
Hi, can the Impress do an automatic Americano or is it always a manual process?
Hi Marnix,
It is always a manual process but its only a case of putting hot water into an espresso.
Cheers
Kev
Ta Kev!
Hope you found this video helpful!
Cheers

Alles richt erklärt.
Das Handbuch hat man wohl übersehen und die Anleitung ist fehlerhaft.
🥰👍👍👍🥰
Schön, dass Sie meinen Beitrag hilfreich fanden Peter :-)
Hi Kevin, just wondering is it normal that the bottom of the machine(where we put tray in) is full of water after cleaning process. Machine is new I got it in Jan this year, so I’m a bit concerned!
Also is it different from descaling where you put powder in the tank?
One last question sorry… Is it ok if I didn’t put water filter thing in during cleaning process.
Thanks Kev 🙏🏼❤️
The cleaning cycle is the back flush cycle, so the basket with the silicone cleaning disk needs to go in the portafilter. If you have a disk with a hole, you'll need a bowl under the portafilter. If the disk has no hole you don't need that, all the water enters the drip tray internally via the solenoid.
When it comes to backflushing, I use the pressurised single shot basket and the sage cleaning disk, but I find SOO much water still comes out of the Portafilter and I feel not a lot gets flushed back into the system. Why would this be?
I'm encountering this problem as well
I have that exact model. Lost the single filter. Bought one on Amazon but it has no holes, it is solid! Can I use it with the rubber thingy for cleaning?
Yes you probably could do that, as it serves the purpose of back flushing.
I note that you only get half pressure on the gauge when doing this process. Shouldn't the machine be going to full pressure for this process? I ask because I've recently purchased one of these and can also only get half pressure. Sage customer service is telling me this is normal, but in a couple of their own company-made videos the machine goes to full pressure during this process (albeit on a non-Impress version). Thoughts?
Thanks for letting me know. It either means it's normal, or it means Sage has a pretty significant quality control issue. My confusion is that I see videos of the Barista Express going to full pressure during cleaning, but the Barista Express Impress seems to not. As I believe they are effectively the same machine (aside from the tamping), I don't see why this would be, other than the Impress machines you and I have are defective.
@@bozman52 Same here! Only goes to exactly 12oclock on mine, so im sure this is normal. AFAIK the grinder is also an upgraded version on the Impress, so there are some slight differences in the mechanics.
Could be the fact the barista impress is designed to go to max 9bar pressure. While the ordinary express goes up to 12 bar,
My express impress does the same, the pressure gauge only goes halfway up while cleaning. Is this right or should I worry? Is there an conclusive answer about his "issue"?
@@Malfie900 , Your machine is likely normal. After a LOT of back and forth with Sage tech support, someone finally confimred to me that they use the exact same pressure guage between the Express Impress (9 bar max) and Impress (12 bar max), so on the Express Impress it appears it's not generating sufficient pressure. Basically, it's just Sage being cheap and reusing parts between models that are really not fit for purpose. Pretty disappointing for the money they want for one of these machines.
Hi Kev do you know if you’ll be likely to get your hands on a Profitech go to review anytime soon? Cheers
Hi Simon,
I will try and get hold of one soon :-)
Does anyone know why mine has started squirting water through where the portafilter locks into the machine during the cleaning cycle?
If you haven't already worked it out, it could be that you need to replace the gasket. The pressure builds up in the portafilter because it's blocked by the cleaning disc and this will put a strain on a worn gasket. The manual tells you how and replacement parts are available from Sage Breville.
@@mysapphirestar Thank you for taking the time to write a reply. So the gasket had actually dislodged itself. I replaced it (which I've done before no problem). Gasket was the same size. Everything seems to be put back together correctly. But the portafilter is not as tight as it used to be and I'm getting problems with pressure and still some leaking. I've been meaning to contact Sage about it, but you know how these things fall to the bottom of your list sometimes
I just got a new Express Impress. Made two cups and then on the third cup wouldn't go back to standby after extraction, the extraction stops but I hear a loud humming noise that only stops if I turn the machine off. Thought it may need to be flushed - tried that - but it won't flush. I would greatly appreciate comments.
Hi Glen,
Do you have your filter in, If so, try removing it and see if the machine works without it, if it does, give the filter a good soak for a good few hours and then try it again with the filter in.
Cheers
Kev
I bought one last week. Whenever I turn it on it seems to empty the entire water tank through some purge pipe behind the drip tray. This then overflows all over the kitchen worktop. If I then fill up the water tank again it makes me a cup of coffee. But this happens every time I turn it on. I'm assuming either it's broken or I've done something wrong. Any ideas?
Hi Rupert,
I would get hold of Sage, as it sounds like there is a problem with your machine.
Cheers
Kev
@@Coffee_Kev Thanks Kev! Gonna do just that...
I had the same issue. Sage are sending me a replacement
@@TobyHamand Yep I got replacement now and works as you'd expect!
I had this issue with the impress and it seems to be fixed now following a factory reset (power on then hold the filter and manual dose buttons for a few seconds). Power cycle it a few times since and no longer dumping water from the tank. Hopefully it doesn't come back.
Hello fellow coffee botherers, lovers? I have no idea
Hey Kev - can i sue cleaning powder instead?
HI, In theory you can use any backflush detergent including powders or backflush liquid, however, Sage do state that their cleaning tablets are designed specifically for the componentry of their machines. Cheers
Kev
Hi Kev have you got a video with a sage barista Express as mine has just started flashing today? Thank you
HI Adam,
Here you go:czcams.com/video/kB_czudrKo0/video.html
Cheers
Kev
Aha, the last time I did this the portafilter flew off with force.. That made quite the mess..
Oops! 😆
When I try to clean this way the gasket breaks. Every time
I’m not so sure those two tablets were “free” lol im just sayin
haha, yeah fair enough, no such thing as free
