- Designer Ivan Poupyrev wants to integrate technology into everyday objects to make them more useful and fun -- like a jacket you can use to answer phone calls or a houseplant you can play like a keyboard. In a talk and tech demo, he lays out his vision for a physical world that's more deeply connected to the internet and shows how, with a little collaboration, we can get there. Unveiled in this talk: Poupyrev announces that his newest device, Jacquard, is now publicly available for all designers to use.

This video, although very interesting, should have been titled "Everything around you can become an interface"
How do the fabrics react to water though?
From what I saw in the slides, I guess they are making each single yarn as a wire wrapped with waterproof materials and normal yarn, so the "wire" garments still work fine after raining/washing
@@kenk9789 that's not the problem. The problem is water will act the same as skin in terms of conductivity. So in other words if you get water on your sleeve it'll start jumping back and fourth between inputs etc..
The fabric is wash resistant. Checkup on project jacquard from Google ATAP. They explained just how difficult it is to develop a fabric that is wash resistant but they solve it after all.
Stage too early, prototype examples. Waterproof irrelevant now, useful later.
Changing the slides by swiping the dust of your jacket is pretty cool.
He is very deep as to "how?", but he hasn't asked "why?" which is possibly the more important question.
exactly my thought. at least we know at this point that this kind of technology is possible and that garment products can become a traceable device
Laziness, of course. 🤣
Why not?
the reason will always be for convenience
It's fantastic. I always thought this way.
Look carefully - to change each slide he is swiping his sleeve ! The Jacket is an interface ! Awesome !
...
Amazing presentation! Got me thinking.
Thinking that you shouldn't buy into any of this i hope. He completely ignored the implications of mass corporate surveillance. This tech just leads to you being tracked by everyone and everything, even if you rip every single IoT device out of your home, walk outside and you'll be tracked by the people around you wearing these things.
You don't want this, trust me.
*Use it, before it uses you.*
TED is simply wonderful! To always show things that can bring people close to brilliant ideas and people. This is really world changing!
This is a really interesting concept, thanks for bringing it to light
and there it is.... the monopoly play
What would happen if we reset technology to the line of the first light bulb and telegraph. And take a different approach. And develop it defiantly.
collaborate with someone in the augmented reality business to make your sensors even more interactive
I think they are doing exactly that but in their own labs, probably making the next consumer version of Google Glass and VR headsets.
So I can buy cheaper clothes, if I sign a licence agreement for my product and give away my personal information?
Think about it buddy)
It is pretty cool though, as a purely ergonomic concept.
No, because information about one person costs less then 1$ (for IT giants). I'm glad it's so cheap. Otherwise you may get one of the Black Mirror's future, which is quite scary.
So precious your information.
muito bom, massa ele controlar a apresentação pela jaqueta, mas sei lá
Wow ..very creative !!
Where can i buy one?
If I want to make a phone call, I’ll just push call on my phone. MUCH EASIER
Otherwise, we must spend time integrating our tech into garments just to achieve the same thing our phones can already do.
I think you missed the point of the video...Watch it again...
I think that phone call example isnt a good example,
Bring it on baby!!
Please add Japanese translation too
So amazing 🤩🤩🤩
Sobra already knew all of this...
I hope we see Project Jacquard and Project Soli into a Google product soon. Imagine this in Google Glass or a VR headset!
His presentation was unspectacular but I think his idea is revolutionary
I can already imagine Auto Fitting clothes.
I could have sworn he was going to talk about making atoms into transistors or something of that nature, but this is something entirely different lMAO
Finally a Ted talk that isn't about diversity or racism. Great ideas
Wouldn't it be great for people to focus on these kind of ideas and progress humanity even further instead of wasting their time on increasing racism towards the leading race that innovated the modern world? Thus regressing our society?
I would also like to point out that the intellectual in the video is WHITE.!!!
@@annonymsurfer3189 lmao its incredible to me how emotionally fragile people like you have become
@@tupd why do you say that?
@@annonymsurfer3189 I can suggest a path for you that would lead to that answer. Often, university lectures are quite open to people sitting in on them. I think if you headed down to a university and attended just a couple of lectures on colonialism or history or anthropology or pretty much any humanities class, you'd understand why your comment is so laughable - not trying to be rude.
Also, even if you didn't agree with the lectures or the people there or whatever, I almost guarantee that the experience itself would be worth while. If would be an experience for sure. The best way to hone your arguments is to put them to the test - online just doesn't cut the mustard for that one.
Awesome!!!!!
Where can I find more information about this? Thanks!
Playing games with cotton gloves could be possible.. Can’t wait for this tech to be fully realized..
I thought this talk was going to be about the simulation theory
The possibility of losing my computer just increased.
Nice
this is what that could make us more active oh good give rest to my eyes and fingers
Huh, interactive sculptures would be interesting, I'm not a fan of art being behind a rope, how bout a sculpture, like a figure, you can interact with, or paintings, maybe a portrait that reacts to your emotions, those plants reactions were interesting, what's this technology called?
Отличная работа!
It's a great idea but it needs to be an integrated product not an external product.. just like electricity in a house.
I don't need to get a generator every time I need electricity. It's ambiguous and all that's needed is a flip of a switch.
Шутка про look great понравилась всему залу ))))
What a charming nerd 😇
I love this. This is the future.
Where can I invest all my money?
I have 1 dollar
Go one step further. In this demonstration, we're using our hands or touch for interfacing. Skipping this step would open up even more possibilities.
I really like this video. I am waiting for selling this modern clothes and will buy it anyway.
كل الناس تجري في سباق التكنولوجيا الي الامام الا نحن العرب. !!
And so we are on our way from Big Brother watching us to completely devouring us...He says “We” would like to give this thing to manufacturers of things. You have to ask yourself who “We” are.
Altought it's a good idea... I don't wanna be connected ALL the time.
It's big and has Electromagnetic Fields
My garage is full of broken computers from the past decades. I'd like to turn them into computers again. Thank you.
i Will buy it just for cheating the exams
One remote control with sensors for everything . Information , command, peace of mind ... It is an idea from Iron man Marvel Comics but obsolete
I just want hoverboard that actually hover without using magnets or air
wait what? with out magnets or air? how do you want it to work then?

I still don't understand how its different or better than IOT.
Its the same thing.
he says its different because its not a new gadget, its integrated into existing things. is what he said, not sure if its accurate.
IOT still requires a screen to monitor the stuff around you like electronics, home appliances etc. I guess he is trying to make a garment as a universal controller to all the electronics without a screen
@@allielee IoT means "internet of things". Generally any electronic device with a sensor (be it a computer with a keyboard, or phone camera, or temperature gauge on your shirt) that has some connectivity to the wider internet fits into this category.
The problem with these kind of devices is that they are intrusive. When people think surveillance they usually think hidden cameras and microphones. But just look at the most recent Google hearings on the amount of data capture Google does with its android phones. All the sensors on the phone are streamed to Google, they can tell if you're standing up or sitting down. They know where you and can pinpoint you on a map, they know the places you visit most often, they know the networks you connect to. This data is farmed and turned into models driving their advertising platforms.
Don't get me started on Alexa and other home microphone appliances.
What this guy is describing is quite possibly the worst idea imaginable. The technology seems really cool im sure, but you don't want this. Trust me, you really don't want this.
@@BinaryReader i see, thanks for the lengthy answer :)
Thankyou i like speak
This only leads to the merger of computers and the human mind, and given the complete lack of privacy and lobbying power of big tech is a large concern. Further, when the technology arrives to simulate thought and present that to be consumed by the brain, that is something that truly scares me.
Только русский мог одеть триканы с лакированными туфлями и говорить, что он восхитительно выглядит. Мля, он еще и дизайнер
Wait... so if the jacket is an electronic device, how do you wash it? Also what if you go through a metal detector? The guards are not going to believe you easily if you say "This jacket is made of metal and i can make phonecalls with it" lol
I think it takes a higher density of metal objects to set off the alarm on metal detectors
@@SweetcheeksMcGee Hmm that could be true and it makes sense. I don't really know much about metal detectors tho

Technically we are cyborgs.
Sally Lou Who, iBorgs.
@@JohnnyArtPavlou What's your definition of one of those? I have made it a personal joke because my Dad's name is Cy and I am his offspring. He had values and ethics but was terrorized, so was my brother, and myself.
Sally Lou Who, cool. For me the idea of iBorgs describes our relationship with our phones and how our lives and experiences and identities are translated and transmuted through them.
SMH. People like me, that don't really need a smartphone but just a phone, we already have limited choices. Technology is being forced upon us and this is just the next step and will affect our health. It's like we cannot escape it and I find it terrifying. We don't need these things. We need love, non-GMO farms, clean water and peace. Great talk and thanks for sharing it.
Armando V. I think adapt with technology or get left behind although i’ve got to admit i am nervous about the effects 5G will have on our health.
@@tarekmahmood6620 Yes, 5G will definitely cause a lot of damage. But, you know, there's nothing we can do about it. It's time we move into the woods now lmao
@@StephenBanks You can only speak for yourself.
@@StephenBanks is it a phobia to put health first? The earth first? It's a false precept to assume technology is always bettering....there are studies showing we are slowly damaging DNA... I think it's unfortunate that so many are easily led by good marketing.
Exchange the "we" for a "I" and you are good. You don't need to use it if you don't like it.
You want to socialize with people that have no problem with technology? Use it for that purpose.
If you forbid using technology for people that like to use it, just because they have contact with you, it is a heavy psychological and egocentric problem on your part, that is solely for you to solve.
And leave the "what the human needs" part for the respective human to answer. I quote some guy above saying "You can only speak for yourself".
PS: There is no problem with GMO - everything you eat is GMO for as long as the human existed. The political implementation of modifications is not part of your personal concern.
PPS: There is no known mechanism for how 5G frequencies could be able to interact with a human body. You are welcome to use the scientific method for any purposes. The close proximity just even lowers amplitudes of the main transmitting device (by square law) that you are in contact with - your phone. Nocebos are solely your problem.
So tell me again why my t-shirt needs to have WiFi? I think he might be going into Google glasses territory
Or Google glasses AND a T-shirt with Wi-Fi.
Great concept, but it would be nice to see it go much much further than this. Seems like he could have done a lot more in 20 years
I'm afraid of the thousands of uses that could be made in war
He did, Google's project jacquard is not his only work. Lookup for project soli from Google ATAP too. That it uses radar to track hand movements that is far more accurate than visual camera. They integrated it in a small tiny chip.
Oh. That sounds great.
👁- oh
This is quite inspiring. People who are putting negative comments need to know that all major systems are made fault tolerant and you cannot keep yourself from exploring new ideas because they sound too wild for your imagination.
I would like to have natural materials that a are healthy for me in my clothing and everything that surrounds me more than everything is a computer - not natural artificial things. It is good only if it helps me to be healthy, live longer.
I'd like to see a really smart jacket that can read what is in view around the wearer, and redisplay that on its surface-with the wearer edited out. A true cloak of invisibility! Hmm... NOT seeing it would be even better.
Bill Thoen suppose there are two people looking at the wearer of the jacket. From whose perspective should the jacket make the wearer look invisible? Having a material dynamically blend with the background is perspective-dependent, after all
Good point, François, but we're talking science fiction, so I'm just speculating. Perhaps the sending and receiving array of pixels is dense enough to blend the feedback well enough to become virtually invisible to hide from 2 or more others. Or maybe the wearer would have to position himself so that the person(s) looking for him can't outflank him, i.e. move along a wall and blend in with the wall. (If an octopus can do it, then maybe we can learn how as well.)
Recorded ad ted2
and now lets talk about the carbon footprint, and increase of toxic garbage in landfills when the clothing is trashed, of this tech.
lets not and say we did
But things aren’t designed to be good interfaces...they were designed for much different uses.
Keyboards, mice, touchscreens were all designed to be interfaces. Is it a coincidence they work the best?
Could a t-shirt be a good input device? But ask yourself why??
Swipe my jacket and I'll do something inherface
I can give you what you want with what you give me
The more computers you have around you, the more likely you're being tracked on for targetted advertising. Big tech will dominate in the IoT space if it were ever to happen, and they are incentivised to track you. Don't buy into this, corporate surveillance is the inevitable path this leads to. It's bad enough now (your phone is likely tracking you now), buying into this idea is inviting big tech firms into your home for their benefit. Privacy has worth, don't give it away for free.
@@romanski5811 Well, capitalism has mutated into something completely different. I'm not sure its obsolete, its incredibly successful, worryingly so.
The term "surveillance capitalism" has been floating around a bit lately, its a fairly apt name for what things have become.
With capitalism tho, I'm just not sure of another system that doesn't involve a significant reduction of wealth and well being for a significant portion of humanity. At some point, tho, we need to trade "wealth and well being" for a better balanced system that's not so harsh in exploiting the environment and ourselves.
I think we're sorta screwed, but lets see what happens.
We need movements that ensure that people's data, belongs to them. Those companies that are tracking you are effectively stealing from you.
Don't worry. . .In the end, Mother Nature will rip man's technological arrogance into tattered Shreds !!!!
Thats true, but imagine the good side of this. Now tech can know if you need a taxi, and were the closest steak house is because you’ve been craving it for a long time.

FINALLY A DECENT TALK
This guy is one of those "tech is God" types. He is blinded to the bigger picture by his worship of technology. Yes, it can be incredibly useful when applied JUDICIOUSLY. But not all willy/nilly into ALL aspects of our life. I AVOID "smart" devices as much as possible (beyond phone, pad, computer). No "smart" TV, fridge, toilet, etc. No "assistant" like creepy Alexa. No cameras/microphones around the house except for phone/pad and I keep the cameras covered and the devices in airplane mode when not in use. And no earbuds or other wireless devices next to my brain (or around the house) that bring even more electromagnetic radiation into my life. We must keep a balance between tech and analog/organic. Guys like this would tilt our lives too much towards Tech.
if your room catches on fire, would your solution be to go to an other room?
like it or not, within this century we will need to think about security of things and not security by avoidance or by "turning it off" becaude you cannot hide from tech forever.
Look at the Internet, if you use it then you *automatically* get a Google, Facebook and Amazon profile.
You enter from an other computer in an other city? There are supercomputers dedicated to recognise your patterns and associate you with that computer as long as you use it.
There's certainly a toss-up between the exciting possibilities of technology and the potential consequences.

our future is computers!
Computer interfaces will not be perfected until the computer can see, hear, evaluate, and take action just like humans. When I don’t need to touch my arm, all I need to do is look or point or speak, when I interact with computers the same way I interact with humans, then computer interfaces will be perfected.
this will destroy the world.
Doesn't like computers at the table, so sticks computers in everything. Has spent 20 years working on a product that's supposed to be a solution but it's still searching for the problem. Felt very out of touch.
In the end. . .MOTHER NATURE is going to tear man's technological arrogance to shreds !!!!
I don't see the benefit of using a jacket instead of a remote.
so you use a remote to change your music, turn the lights on/off and do your presentations?
@@BankruptGreek yes, i would do that
well you've got to wear clothes anyways. might as well remove the need for remotes by integrating them into the clothes. In addition some health/sport sensors can be integrated. Brings along its own problems though. For example if a healthinsurance company gets your pants data and sees you dont move a lot on a daily basis they might increase your Insurance costs because you live more unhealthily. Ofcourse there are still way worse examples for what such data can be used, but I didnt really take the time to think about that yet.
