    Mr. Colby…Harvard and Yale. The epitome of the credentialed class. I want to like him but I’d probably end up choking him out instead.

    meritocratic careerist credentialism. the original purpose of university was to produce people to staff the state machinery.

      Prepare ministers…Harvard, Oxford etc were all theological schools. During the industrial Revolution they became finishing schools for the east coast elites. Academic careers were not prestigious until the World Wars tapped them to staff the growth of government that you correctly identify.
