  • Catholic faithful carried large platforms bearing the statue of Jesus through the streets of the colonial city of Antigua, Guatemala, on Holy Thursday (March 28) as part of traditional Easter celebrations.
Faithful dressed in purple cloaks reminiscent of biblical times, carrying a float with a statue of Jesus and his cross in a procession to mark Christ's passion.
Antigua is reportedly home to the world's largest Easter procession. Faithful in the city have been celebrating Easter this way since 1543, when Spanish missionaries brought the tradition over. Now, locals take part in the event alongside thousands of tourists.
This procession marks the start of Easter events in Antigua, commemorating the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus Christ, which combines Catholic tradition and Mayan beliefs.- Report from Reuters
