Growing and Foraging 100% of My Food - Day 111 Update

  • For one year I am growing and foraging 100% of my food. That means no grocery stores, no restaurants and not even taking a nibble of a cookie or sip of beer at a party for an entire year!
You might imagine me in the countryside living off the land or on a farm. On the contrary, I live in the urban environment of Orlando, Florida, in a 100 square foot tiny house that I built with repurposed materials. With no land of my own, I farm the front yards of people in my neighborhood and share the bounty with them. I take trips to nature to harvest salt from the ocean, coconuts to make coconut oil, wild yams bigger than my head and dozens of other wild foods. I also forage for food all over the city, where people walk by every single day, without ever noticing the abundance around them.
This video was filmed on day 111 of the year and gives you both an introduction and update to my life!

He was a farmer and we grew our food. Now, I am trying to grow my vegetables and some of my fruits: papaya, dragon fruit, pomelo, lanzones, guayabano. Thank you for the videos that you have shared so far. I found them to be a source of inspiration (telling me that other people are caring for the earth too), and a source of guidance (difficulty has some solution and normally, the solution comes from people who have faced them). Good luck. More blessings!

Great stuff Rob! .... but please, up that saltmaking game, you'll enjoy it. Boil until the first salts settle (calcium sulphate are the needle ones and calcium carbonate is the powdery bit). Pour off the brine and let that evaporate slower so that nice flaky NaCl crystals have time to form. Scoop them off and eventually discard the liquid at the end (called bittern, it is bitter, and has various salts and other chemicals that worsen flavour).

Your commitment to live off your efforts to cultivate and forage your own food for a year is admirable. I just hope you're not feeling sad or lonely about it. It would have been really nice for you to have friends to share the experience with and could help you daily so it wouldn't be so tiring as you say. Maybe that's the potential of your current project, i.e. to let others know how possible it is and who may join in your efforts. At this point it seems a little bit shut off from others, because you can't be invited to friends homes to share a meal they've cooked with them. It's a way the energy of love and care is expressed is all I'm saying. I'd think that good yummy feeling of eating together would be sorely missed. Hope you have friends joining you for meals sometimes and who help cook too. :)

When you said foraging, I thought you'd be foraging some Florida native plants, such as Purslane, cabbage palm (heart of palm), Blackberry, Beauty berry. But, it is still AMAZING! I could never do it!

Read about you for the first time last week from the Orlando Weekly. I've been mesmerized ever since.....certainly a little jealous seeing how you made things so simple in comparison to the rest of us.

Hey Rob, I really respect you because you don't just talk the talk but walk the walk. I was really happy to hear that you are growing Malabar Spinach and Moringa. In the Philippines we call them Alungbati and Malunggay/Mulunggay and they are known for their healing effects on the body. Traditionally we put Malabar Spinach with stewed beans such as mung beans. I also like making a refreshing/revitalizing tea from fresh Moringa leaves. Keep living your truth and keep producing this amazing content!

Rob, I grew up in Orlando, not far from Audobon Park. I know exactly where you are! I'm a big Curtis Stone fan, but you take it to the next level by foraging and processing your food. I'm returning to Florida in May and would love to attend your class! You're awesome and just what people need to sustain themselves. God bless you!

Your videos have inspired me to start my own smal square foot garden this weekend. I'm starting with 8 feet sized squares 😬 and 2 separate containers for sweet potato. Also showered with a bucket in the shower with me to catch some of the excess water

I've heard of some possible success in Southern Florida, whereas I'm in Central Florida. My guess is that few people have success with it and they are the exception. And it certainly does not grow wild. So there's really no way for me to eat it during this year. Even if I was in South Florida it would take years to possibly establish the trees, and I only had 10 months of prep. But yes, you are right that it does technically grow in a small part of Florida.

Love your work Rob...for the katuk leaves (at 3:37) and moringa, you can eat them as soup. Search for the video recipes of "sayur katuk bening" and "sayur kelor bening". There are very delicious Indonesian food. Full of fibers and vitamins.
