5 Reasons We Love Our Catamaran + Why We Want To Sell It!

  • We break down all of the things we love about our catamaran, Gemini 105MC, and all of the things we wish we knew when we were buying our catamaran that may have kept us from wanting to sell our boat. These are some key things to think about when you are searching to buy your own sailboat.
    We love our sailboat but wish we would have taken the plunge and future proofed our sailing options. Now that we have decided to sail full-time we wish we had a more capable Bluewater sailboat. I would still go multihull over monohull but I see the pros and cons! Let us know what you think in the comments.

    The higher bridgedeck will only eliminate that hull slap at anchor. I Sailed/crewed on a St. FRANCIS 50' cat from Capetown to Annapolis in 2016. Anytime we had wind/swell on the beam, we had slap and sometimes hard enough to raise you out of your bunk.

      @theadventuresons1223  Před 15 dny

      I know it’s common on all cats but the Gemini only sits less than 1 foot off the water. So pretty much any swell it slaps. But at anchor is by far the most frustrating part.

    Hull slap can be dealt with. You buy a beach inflatable like a raft or a small boat and you put it under the bow at night with a tether just long enough for it to float just under the lower part of the bridge deck and leave it tied, it will block the water and provide a cushion so no more hull slap. Takes only a few minutes to put in place and remove.

    The best advice we ever had was “ buy a boat for where you want to go!” We sailed our Gemini from East Coast to the Bahamas for a few years, but bought a Lagoon 380 for the Caribbean. Here on the Pacific we have had monohulls. Inside steering is great for Inside Passage to Alaska.

      Wish I could have seen so much into the future. We had never cruised before and had a newborn so the Gemini made a great floating condo. The Lagoon 380 seems like the perfect setup for us as it wouldn’t limit the “where we want to go”. Every time I sail upwind I dream of a monohull haha but life at anchor is so nice in a catamaran!

    Best of luck selling and upgrading boats. The Lagoon 380 is one of the most popular catamarans in the world. Good choice

      I figured for a catamaran you can’t go wrong with the Lagoon 380 staying on a reasonable budget! Now to find that budget haha

    The Gemini would be a tough boat to live on full time. We have one (#907). I agree with everything you stated you like about the boat, both upside and downside. The hull slap I can and have gotten used to, but then again, our boat load is very lite. One of the things I do not like about the Gem is that ALL of the cargo/fuel/water weight is all on the back quarter of the boat. Can’t change any of that! And the weight distribution exacerbates hull slap. Vicious cycle. BUT…….it is a blast to sail! The boat’s stability is why we own one. No way my wife would ever feel comfortable leaning over 40 degrees! Can you imagine that with a toddler? I think you should add one more thing to your list of your top 5: “Sale”-ability! Many people don’t know this, but there is an almost “cult-like” following for these boats much like Airstream travel trailers or Lazy Dayz RVs. This is an awesome feature of the boat. And you already have a guy in the comments ready to buy! We bought ours unadvertised and without a broker. I plan to sell it when the time comes the same way. They also seem to be holding their value. And yours has a bunch of extras! But in the mean time, keep cruising and posting videos! And when you get on the East Coast and come up the Chesapeake, even if you are sailing a larger cat, we would love to share a cocktail or two with you! We will be watching your videos!

      You hit the nail on the head! Such an amazing boat to go sail with empty or just for the weekend. Once we have the dinghy up on the davits the butt end is so far down into the water it looks like we are pulling a wheelie! Terrible for the hull slap. Now that we are used to catamaran life it would be really hard to go back to a monohull both sailing and at anchor. I do love this little boat! Will definitely keep you posted if/when we end up on the east coast! I think the Gemini would do fine through the Panama Canal, Caribbean, and east coast US!

    Dude my buddy has a 60' cat. We were pushing it from SF to Hawaii doing 15-18kts in 8-12' seas. Let me tell you when we surfed down a swell the slap was like being in a bowling alley only thing you were sleeping behind the pins. His free board is super high so at anchor we slept fine. I guess the bigger the boat the bigger the slap. Forget about dock space and you are forced to anchor out in the elements as well. Another thing is you need a crew on passages. Just my 2 sense. Good luck.

    • @theadventuresons1223
      @theadventuresons1223  Před 6 měsíci +1

      Yeah all catamarans have slap for sure but we hover like 6” off the water at anchor haha. It’s good when it’s good but man it’s bad when it’s bad. But the catamaran setup is so good with a family. Definitely could use some more hands on deck but as the kid gets older it should get better for us. Thanks!

    Super cool video! Geminis are such cool looking boats... Excited to see what your next boat will be... A company that you don't see as often = Island Spirit and Fortuna Island Spirit...I think they're a bit less expensive than Lagoons...also Prout 38s perhaps a bit less expensive but super solid looking...buttt...also prone to wave slap from what people say. I have zero experience with any of these boats, but hope to one day :) In the meantime, will stay tuned to your channel!

      Thanks for the support! The Gemini has been a great boat for us, but soon larger oceans will be calling. I have been checking out the Prouts but haven’t heard about Island Spirits! Thanks for the info I will check them out. Probably hard to beat a Lagoon 380 for what we are looking to do in the next 5 years but I love all solid boats!

      There is another channel, Sailing Saoirse, and I think they have their boat listed right now so you could see what they look like -- there are far fewer of them than lagoon 38s of course. Best of luck with the sale/transition!

    I've been looking at gemini 3400 and 105s for after we stop ocean cruising. We have a 1972 Kennedy 47. The up side is that it's a tank.... it hit a whale in the Bismark sea and did another round the world. But it drafts 7.5 feet and heels 12 degrees under full sail with 26kts. Thank you for the honest review!

    • @theadventuresons1223
      @theadventuresons1223  Před rokem

      Can’t go wrong with a great harbor or coastal cruising boat as the Gemini. The draft is the best part and flying by people without even cleaning up the dishes on the countertops is great haha

    I went from a Gemini 3200 to a PDQ36. They are hard to find and some have not aged well, but they sail great, have more room and I like the twin outboards for easy maintenance. I like your video and the Sea of Cortez is amazing - but it has gotten really built up over the years....

    • @theadventuresons1223
      @theadventuresons1223  Před rokem

      Hey thanks for watching. The pdq36 is a great interesting boat! Definitely more blue water capable I think than a Gemini. I think that’s why I lean towards the lagoon 38 is because they built so many of them it seems there are plenty available, parts and know how knowledge out there but my bank account isn’t there yet. A Prout 38 would be interesting also but more rare as well.

    Privilege 39 .... look at the prices, very affordable extremely blue water capable....but halyard winches at the mast. I believe the Privilege 430 can have them at the cockpit.

      Definitely keeping my eye on some privileges but so far there is one 1 39 for sale in the entire world so not as easy to come by as a Lagoon 380 but definitely blue water proven!

    What ever you do D O N O T BUY A LAGOON! There construction is plane poor. With there bulkhead Problems and hulls Separating I would Not buy a Lagoon.
    With the Boat market dropping you can get a way better boat than a Lagoon.
    Thanks for the video and looking forward for more.

      Hawaii!!! Thanks for watching. Grew up visiting my grandma in Kona on the big island. From my understanding only the larger lagoons have the bulkhead problems? They made like 1000 lagoon 380s and are one of the most ocean crossed catamarans made. But I have heard of the 45 and 50 footers having bulkhead problems that Lagoon has tried to shrug off
