What a nice genuine warm helpful man giving us a no spin informative video. A huge difference from all the ego driven look-at me-videos that populate youtube. Thank you sir!
Many thanks to all. I am so happy you find the video helpful. In fact I spent only very a little time made it. Now I know what people need, I will make more videos, more in detail from now on. the next will be 500 USD living in Malaysia. Many thanks again. Daniel
+m rishal Don't be so rude, he is doing the best he can. Appreciate his effort to provide very helpful information to us, don't get stuck on minor things. We all understood what he meant when he said it.
Many thanks folks. If I knew so many friends would like this, I should have done better. I really only spent very little time for this video. Now I am in Spain, I think I can do one video: 500 Euros a Month Living in Spain. Look forward to it.
im moving to Thailand soon. Retired from USA. I have been to Spain,Germany ,Korea and many States. I have visited Thailand and stayed away from bars. Maybe we stay in contact! Thanks!
Very nice video Daniel, full of practical details and your quiet style of delivery is very charming. I know English isn't your first language but it's very clear and precise. Good information like this is important when considering choices, I am thinking of retiring early in South East Asia, I have lived in Japan, Thailand and Africa (I am British, currently living in New Zealand). Thanks for your lovely video.
Very well done, video. Thank you for your time, and quoting the prices. For those moving to Thailand, where he was living in this video is Khon Kaen, in Isaan, Northeast Thailand. One of the least expensive areas in Thailand to live, and you can live on 500.00 USD a month as he says. You'd need to speak some Thai, as that area is not so much a tourist area as Chiang Mai, (where most older ex-pat retirees live, because of the hospitals. ) It definitely doesn't have the nightclubs and bars that you see in Bangkok, Pattaya Beach, Koh Samui, or Phu Ket. Which are all expensive. But if you want a quiet life, cheap, it's definitely doable. If you want bars, partying, and nightlife, you'd slowly get bored to death in Khon Kaen. But those places are a lot more expensive to live in.
+James Jenkins, you are quite right. After living in Bangkok for a few years, my observation and estimation is, while living on much less in small towns and villages is doable, you could even live in Bangkok quite comfortably in a security building apartment with air-con, hot water shower, washing machine, balcony, personal internet, fridge and microwave (not a proper kitchen, which is generally not necessary), fitness center, swimming pool, a ten minute walk from a huge, beautiful shopping mall with state-of-the-art movie theaters and a subway station that gives you cheap commute access to virtually any regular point of interest to most expats for about $1,600-$1,700 USD per month. That would include reasonable health insurance coverage for most costly events or illnesses (and that is for a man over 60 but with no serious pre-existing conditions), dining out 3-4 time per week on familiar hearty western fare...and even treating yourself to pleasurable companionship 3 or perhaps 4 times per week. Providing you are not frequenting the expensive go-go bar scene for the latter, that is, and rounding up your companions in more mundane local settings instead. Of course, it is easy to succumb to temptation on all issues from dining options to the ladies and pay double or triple that amount per month without even noticing it in a city like Bangkok. But once you get past the initial "kid in a candy store" mentality and settle down, economizing gets a lot easier. Or so I hear and have observed. lol. I haven't quite gotten past that mentality just yet, but I know I will someday.
No, I do not speak Thai at all, you get alone well with English, people are friendly and helpful here. I do not really live in Thailand, I travel all over the world, for fun and experience.
thank you very interesting. I lived in Thailand for a while, I like the country, I like people, peaceful people. I am hoping this time around I go back for good.Thailand is on the top of my list.
I live in bang saray with my wife and child. We spend about $1500 Canadian a month. This includes food, rent and utilities for a nice house 100 meters from a small beach, English Thai school for my son , family memberships to windsurf, and tennis clubs , the running costs for a small motorcycle and occasional nights out. This is getting more difficult because of the steep decline in the Canadian dollar but still doable.
OMG a great video about living in Thailand, with numbers and real life examples and hints and an actual footage of decent living conditions and places to eat, etc. I'm so glad i found your video, and thank you so much for it. When i go to Thailand (i've been before and i will go again for certain) and if i ever saw you, i'd shake your hand with since heartfelt gratitude. You'd feel the gratitude for sure. i ride motorcycles, but i have heard that large bikes (not mini bikes) are very difficult to get licensed, but i'm not sure. i'm checking it out. i am living in Tokyo now for 20 years, and am planning retirement. Videos like yours are incredibly helpful, and there are few out there. When you come back to Japan, contact me please. I live by the Tokyo Tower Not sure how to tell you my email address, as i don't leave comments very often on YT. 日本語もOKです。
Oh, nice seeing you having visited Thailand. I'm Thai and also like your violin videos that are very informative and useful for self repairs, saving me a lot. You really live like locals, the same way I'm used to. I live in Bangkok and just know that the living cost in Khon Kaen around the university is comparable to where I'm living (not in the city center).
Nice, informative video--thanks! The quiet life of northeastern Thailand would suit me well for semi-retirement--I especially like the open markets with all the inexpensive fruits and veggies. I'm learning to speak ( as well as read and write) Thai so I can communicate better with the locals and also to give me an advantage for teaching them English.
Thank you very much for this, I am a 70 year old Englishman and have visited Thailand in the winter for 4 years, you do this very well l hope that you do more.. thanks again.
I liked your video. More importantly I like your personality I appreciate when people are humble. our family is from Seattle Washington and we grew up Mormon. My brother went on a Mormon mission to Norway and met his wife there I now have for Norwegian nephews and have visited all so many times. It's cool to see that you are branching out and doing other things in other countries. I'm moving to Pattaya in June and I can't wait any advice you could give me would be very much appreciated
Luke 15 of the Christian Bible explains the gist of this but I am mainly talking about the women whom most men think we can rescue but they are there by choice.
Sawadeeka 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻 I love your video! Very detailed and informative! 🙂 Please make more! I'm your new subscriber! If you come to Singapore, I will be Glad to show u around!
crazydog2580 i sold my house in 2000 for US$700,000, i moved to the philippines 2011 and dont work, i was 48 then, i spend $200 a month, i live in a small town so my rent for a 2 bed 1 bath unfurnished apt is less than $40 and to ward off theft or robbery i have 2 guard dogs, i eat out for breakfast, the beach is 10 minutes away, lunch i cook and dinner i grab take out, snacks are very cheap, halo halo or maize con hielo is 25 pesos so 2 would come to less than a dollar, some snacks are 5 pesos, a haircut is less than a dollar.
Great video,I like that you show your own cooking. Which is cheaper plus if you know how to cook it seems you like your own cooking the best That is what I find for myself. Keep up the videos I enjoy them Are you still in Thailand??
US$550 is a bit of a stretch but its all about location location location, where this fellow lives doesnt really have a whole lot going on for any western person, male or female, however it is a rather nice town to visit. I live on US$700 a month and thats fine with me and I come and go into Chiang Mai as well as other parts of SE Asia, Cambodia, Laos, Malaysia, Indonesia but I have been on the road all my life, now 68 years old, so i stay in decent hotels/guest houses for around US$10 a night, sometimes a bit more, sometimes a bit less, cable TV, fan,WiFi, Shower, hot water, clean, safe, laidback. What more do you want for US700 a month?. Im in Chiang Mai right now. Oct 14th 2015
that is great that u give many details , it up to which area u all stay & local market with local food , some places need to paid for room rent per month + deposit + electric & water that u use , thk for showing the way how to live saving in Thailand year 2015 , within 500 USD at Khon Kaen.
Aloha from Maui Daniel, thank you for the nice clear video. I have been to Thailand 3 times and plan on moving there in about 6 months with my 2 poodles. Was nice to see that poodle in your video! Where are you living now?
AV Daniel Violin Yes indeed, depending on where coz India's a big subcontinent. Have been to many places in India too. I was a flight attendant for more than 20 years.
Great video Daniel, thanks so much for making it! I just returned from 3 months in Thailand and I am thinking to move there. Is it hard to rent an apartment? I see below you are in Spain now. I am also looking to hop around and live different places on 1000. U.S. A month or less. I will keep in touch. Aloha from Maui ( so expensive here!)
Great video Daniel! Thanks for sharing ... I have a condo in Bangkok, and I think it is a bit more expensive in BKK but still it is not that expensive! khob khun krub !!!!!

that go not no listen him no no you look for visa and all then you think about this again before you go i live long time here and no like what people say here all about life here in thailand you can trust me when i say that is all fantasie you can no work here you can only stay more not sorry ah so is this
I’m really enjoy your vdo. I will be there for sure when I retired. P.s. My aunt rented 2.5 star hotel in bankok near Suriwong rd. for 1 month it was cost her 22000bath or $700 . Came with air conditioning TV WiFi swimming pool gym and the best part everyday we came back the bed was neat and beautiful . So enjoy 😉 there.
so its cheaper to stay a month in a rented apartment lol hotels are like £13 a night, your apartment is like £90 a month if I've understood correctly. is it possible for a tourist to fly over and rent for the month or longer?
Very good video Daniel, I live in Chiang mai, prices are very similar, your summary was very good indeed, hospital and dental there, and here. is a very high standard and cheap, chok dee

Daniel, Interesting video. I have heard it said, but it is nice to see someone that is actually doing it.
Daniel very good video....you showed what many people that take videos on CZcams do not do, spend time on what the actual costs are.

Very helpful. Thanks!
I found that a really helpful video, thank you.
Hi from a fellow Norwegian/Swedish (Bergen) im moving to Korat in april. And this was werry helpfull=)
The cost of living in Thailand's countryside is indeed cheap but that's not the case of Bangkok. Here, vegetables used to be cheap but not anymore.
crazy to think i could sell my house and live there for 30years with no job
Crazy that you wrote that - but you are now going to work another 30 years running on the hamster wheel !
crazydog2580 i sold my house in 2000 for US$700,000, i moved to the philippines 2011 and dont work, i was 48 then, i spend $200 a month, i live in a small town so my rent for a 2 bed 1 bath unfurnished apt is less than $40 and to ward off theft or robbery i have 2 guard dogs, i eat out for breakfast, the beach is 10 minutes away, lunch i cook and dinner i grab take out, snacks are very cheap, halo halo or maize con hielo is 25 pesos so 2 would come to less than a dollar, some snacks are 5 pesos, a haircut is less than a dollar.
Finally a good insight & accurate estimate on living in Thailand away from the crowds.
Thanks, very detailed and informative!
Electrucity and water come seperately, aboout 10 USD a month. Of course depends on how much you use.
Daniel, is that 100 usd?
WOwww......My Apt in Pattaya was 8500 a month, and electricity was right around 3k a month.
many thanks to all, especially Shabrina. In fact I am going to Singapore tomorrow. My facebook: Daniel Strings. Hope to see you there.
Great video,I like that you show your own cooking. Which is cheaper plus if you know how to cook it seems you like your own cooking the best That is what I find for myself. Keep up the videos I enjoy them Are you still in Thailand??

Your video is very helpful and interesting. I can't believe the foods are so cheap. Thank you very much for sharing.
It is also cheap here in Bosnia and Albania, and you feel higher class.
food here also like 1.5 usd a meal at ordinary restaurant.
Great video.. so down to earth brilliant stuff.. watching in 2017

Thank you for this very interesting and informative video.
6:30 On the motorbike always keep someone in front of you! That's pretty smart: if the driver sees the first bike then they'll see you, and if they don't your advance party pays the price.
Everyone please remember that the maximum time you can stay in Thailand is limited by your visa, not so much by expenses. Easy to stay 90 days, if you get a visa in advance, and a 30 day extension. Beyond that, major hassles. Do NOT burn bridges and just show up. Trust me, don't.
It depends on which country you hold citizenship. If Norway or US and more like UK, Australia, New Zealand I am sure is the same....no preauthorized visa is needed.
Thank you for this vid. I enjoyed it very much !
