In this follow-up video, we revisit the Top 10 Costco Preps that I recommended three years ago and examine how inflation has impacted their prices. We've all seen the rising costs of goods, and it's crucial to assess how this economic factor has affected our ability to prepare for emergencies. Join me as we compare the original prices with the current ones, providing insights into whether Costco's emergency preparedness supplies still offer the same value they did a few years ago. Discover if they remain a budget-friendly option for your emergency preparedness needs, and get a clear picture of the impact of inflation on our ability to stay ready for unforeseen events.

Gold standard of prepping videos, no click bait, fear or doom predictions…just facts
WOW! Thank you SO much!
What I noticed during the video is the sizes of the cans are smaller and cost more. If you account for that also, the price increases would be even greater.
the corned beef was actually double (due to price increase and shrinkage) they even had the price per oz right on the label not sure why Urbanprepper didn't notice.
I was looking specifically for this but only the corned beef was smaller. 0.5oz per can
Shrinkflation is a hell of a bitch
The toilet paper has less on the rolls now too
Yes but Biden pointed out some things had 0% inflation. Like you can still get a combo meal which includes bread, vegetable, meat and a drink for $1.50 at Costco. Not to mention the free samples. (hot dog & soda)
Shrinkflation is also affecting the price of corned beef. Can size decreased 0.5 ounces from three years ago. Excellent video by the way.

@@Uvoted4this nice red herring.
Everything keeps getting more and more expensive. Best time to prepare is now.
Thanks for watching! Yeah, we need to stay consistent with our prepping. It's only going to get worse.
I live in the Northeast. A 16 oz bag of dried beans was 89 cents in 2018. Currently all varieties are $2.29 for the same size.
Your videos are so relevant. It brings value to the whole community that are lucky enough to stumble on this channel
There are some items (not just Costco) that I refuse to buy now because of the price, and I'm learning to make more from scratch. Thanks for the comparisons.
Me too. Cooking from scratch is also healthier.
Thanks for coming back and making these videos again Cliff!
The other part of this equation is shrinkflation. I know the toilet paper size has both shrunk in size of square and the number of squares. That's another consideration, is that you're not getting the same size of item when purchasing now.
I'm jealous he got a FOUR pack of jars of peaches. Ours are only a 3 pack now.
I wish other prepping channels followed this model which is so helpful rather than the doom porn trend which is hurting so many people. Thank you for this example.
WOW! Thank you so much for the kind words. I try to avoid doom and gloom and sick with pure prepping. Doom and gloom sure is popular though with the masses! It's not my thing though...
Thanks Cliff! That is irrefutable real-world data and should motivate even the most reluctant.
Shop those loss leader sales! Learn how often which stores run which items on sale and be patient.
My husband and I recently shopped at Costco. We did fill the basket especially full and bought a coffee maker for $99. Even though we figured that we would pay a bit more than our past large trips I did not expect what the sticker shock would be a figured that the final price would be around $400, based on past big Costco shopping days. It was almost $800😭
Wow! You are correct. Some of the same items I buy have doubled or even tripled. Still try to buy to stay ahead of the increases that continue to rise.
This video also didn't account for package and product shrinkage. For example, their TP is smaller than they used to be, and the price is still higher.
Great to hear another GREAT prepper perspective again!❤❤❤
Basic, well founded videos. From an intelligent source. Thank you, again!
The number of sheets in the Kirkland toilet paper has decreased since 3 years ago.
I didn't know that! 🧻
Thank you for documenting this
This is insane! Thanks TUP. Excellent work as always.
Yea, it's pretty crazy. Thanks for watching.
30% inflation over 3 years wouldn't actually average 10% per year, since the growth is exponential. Plugging the number into a growth rate calculator yields closer to 8.6% average growth.
True. I think it's going to speed up. I tried to keep it to 10% just to make the math easier and a little conservative. I still think it's bad though.
Ben is right, you can't simply divide by the number of years.
Awesome video! Love the hard data!
Wow! Thank you! Love the video
You are so welcome! Thanks for watching, Charlie.
Thanks Cliff, a 10% annual return on a nobrain investment like food is outstanding if you have a LARGE enough pantry or an empty room in the basement ! Just don’t forget to rotate your stock.🤔
Great video Cliff! So glad to have you back making new content! Thanks.
It's good to be back!
I think you can get around this to some extent if you're patient about when you buy items instead of getting everything at once. Follow the weekly circulars of your local grocery stores and whatnot and wait for specific items to go on sale.
Wow, it’s awesome that you did this! I hadn’t realized the price jump on many items!
Thanks for watching, Johnny! Yeah, the price increases have been crazy.
Very valuable info. I shop around. Sometimes Trader Joes or Fred Meyer or Wal-Mart or ethnic stores have cheaper per unit for these items.
Me too. It's hard to do one stop shopping.
Appreciate the analysis!
Very well done. Please do this once/year going forward. Thanks!
Good idea! Thanks for watching! Love your channel.
Thanks for info!! Great to hear your voice again!!
Thanks Roger!!
That was awesome.
Thanks
Good to see you again.
This was extremely helpful. Glad that you had documented the process and the prices from then and today. 👍👍
Glad it was helpful! Thanks for watching!
Great tips as always. Thanks
Thank you very much
Thanks for this price comparison! It sure is different shopping today than it was a few years ago. Changing prices and product shrinking keep us having to be smart shoppers. Costco still has some good deals though!
Great video! thanks for sharing.
Thanks for watching, Scott!
I'm curious if you also checked the size/volume of each item to see if those items are exactly identical
That should definitely be considered.
due to shrinkflation the prices are often worse than they appear. price goes up but package size goes DOWN.
I double checked a few of the items like the rice to make sure there wasn't any trickery going on. All of the sizes seemed consistent.
Good point! A stack of paper plates used to have 285, but now it's 240. Sneaky!
@@TheUrbanPrepper thanks for checking that
Unfortunately except for the non food items, all these food items will be expired in 3 years. I just tossed out hundreds in food preps that I couldn’t eat in time because I over prepped. 3 or 6 months for a food prep goes by very quickly
As @theurbandPrepper mentioned bartering is a seriously good option to consider even in a non emergency. Hope you aren't using things into year 3! Use them at 1.5 years on schedule and things will get used instead of thrown out!
Great video thank you
Very good update, thanks
Thanks for watching!
Great idea, 👍🏼
Wow! Thanks for this update TUP :-)
Thanks for watching, Mary!
Ive monitored the price of rotel to think of inflation. It was $1. Then 1.25. The 1.33. This week i noticed it was on sale, but regular price is now 1.45.
I appreciate your videos SO much!
I'm glad that you enjoy them! More are on the way.
Thank you for this very informative video.
You are very welcome
Great video idea, and thanks you for the pdf you put alot of work into it helping us all out
Thank you, Oscar!
Loved it 👏🏻
Great video! You covered everything...wise advice.
Thank you!!!
Thanks a bunch!
I knew it in my mind, but to see it is shocking! 😮 glad to be prepping ahead.
So interesting! Thanks! 🤩🙌
Thanks for watching!
great stuff
Thank you!
Excellent vid
Thanks Hedge!
Good stuff, man. Thanks.
Thanks Jack!
I really enjoyed this video. Thank you for the time and trouble you you went to, to provide this information.
You're welcome. Thank you for watching, Kathy!
Thank you. We have been saving our receipts from maybe 2 years ago to present - will soon be comparing the different stores & the items.on those receipts.
I would be curious to learn about what your data shows!
@@TheUrbanPrepper Right now I have a lot of water bathing to do then some pressure canning - I will make a note & tape it to the computer to remind me to let you know the results when I compare those receipts.Judi
I work for a business that buys stuff from Costco and delivers it to people. If what I found out is true the Kirkland inhouse brand batteries are made by duracell. Could be useful to know.
Most generic food & household products are made in the same factories (not all obviously). When a factory makes something for a brand product, they often have additional line time available in the plant, so they sell it for generics where the only real difference is packaging, and the generics don't typically advertise, so those things together mean additional cost savings can be passed on to the consumer.
@@casondrastinson8525 Huh neat thing to keep in mind and the trick is finding out which is witch I'll be using Kirkland batteries saving quite a bit on it.
It is correct that Duracell makes Kirkland batteries
Damn.. the price gouge for corn beef is no joke.
I shop at Costco.. but I also find it very irritating. They move things around the store so finding things takes longer. Ugh.
Thanks for the video
Yeah. The corned beef price has been crazy! It's no longer worth buying. Time for Preppers to can their own beef.
Thanks for doing this awesome video! Definitely an eyeopener.. We all just have to prepare as best we can. Blessings~~~
Thanks for watching, Deb!
Great video 📹
Now, *this* is a smart video. Good work!
Thanks!
I appreciate this contant right here, following it up with a three-year adjustable inflation rate. Subscribed.
Thank you so much! More to come!
That was an excellent video.
Thank you so much!
Well done thanks for the breakdown of inflation.
Thanks for watching, David!
Thanks U.P.
This is an awesome video
This is a great video
Oh my gosh! I estimated a 15% increase, not 31%. Oh my. I will forward this along. Thanks for your hard work and we do look forward to the next 3-year update.
Yeah, pretty sad to see. Thanks for watching, commenting, and sharing, Frank!
@@TheUrbanPrepper You cannot take an average of percentages to come up with a meaningful figure. The 31% is meaningless. The real, meaningful figure is the smaller one where you figured the overall increase of the entire cart.
Fantastic video, thanks TUP! I suspected it was this bad, but it was really eyeopening seeing a direct comparison.
Thanks for watching. Yeah, it's really sad to see.
Thanks, Brandon....
I appreciate your channel, missed it
It's good to be back!
Nice to still have a proper prepping channel . lot of others seem to just be turning in to news channels and giving us there opinion on events
Thank you so much! Yeah, I try to keep my channel is pretty old school Prepping in terms of content.
Yikes! But, thank you. So thorough and thought-provoking. Very helpful.
I knew this would probably be depressing, but couldn't resist a new video. Also now I wanna go to Costco
The best information you can take from this video. Is what you buy today will be worth far more in the future. Understanding what real money and real stores of value can insulate you from future increases in price. What you do today will be huge in the future.
Great video! Well done I like your color dot system I am going to do that. Thanks
Thanks for watching! Yeah, the color dot system has been working GREAT for us! I'm glad that others find it useful.
What a pleasant surprise! Excellent considering the price!
wow im early which is not usual for me but surprisingly practical video
Well Done
Thank you!
Whoa. This is an eye opening video. It is shocking to see how much prices have increased over the past three years. And I agree with the many comments about shrinkflation. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for watching and commenting. Looks like I may need to do a follow up video on shrinkflation! 😯
I don't have the words to express how well you've done this video and content!
Please add in the 'shrinking' of the sizes as well.
I also have no words to express how 'happy' I am with our elected's that just keep spending our tax monies into oblivion! As well as other, very poor decisions like making energy costs go so very high!
Everyone, what he has said here is very true, this isn't going to reverse anytime soon. Costs will continue to go higher and shortages will continue to spread........
Act accordingly!!
Thank you SO much! I am working on the shrinkflation video now.
Missed you!
I missed posting! It feels good to post again.

Cornbeef, wow!! I’ve noticed containers smaller as well.
FYI -- Out here in Utah the double jug of Olive Oil, the one where you get two jugs together. It's now $46!!! It's almost doubled in price from a year ago where I remember paying $27 for the 2-pack. (I'm a soap maker, so track the price of that item. I seem to remember it at $19 2-3 years ago.
Still cheaper (per oz) to buy two 3 liter olive oil containers at the $46 price than to buy two individually. Per oz price for a single olive oil container is still more expensive.
Definitely a tough one to buy in bulk at above 45 for two (Same state as you purchased in Utah)
I like your dot system!
Thank you SO much! It's been very helpful for our pantry organization!
@@TheUrbanPrepper I use a felt marker to write the date of purchase. It’s not perfect, but it tells me which item to use first.
Excellent video. Practical.and informative. I would like to say how surprised I am but I'm not. I didn't do anything as elaborate as you have here but my wife and I do keep track of grocery spending. Our average weekly grocery bills have gone up from $75 to $97 dollars over the past 3 years. So not the exact items every time but over the course of a month, each month we buy pretty much the same stuff and this works out to about 30%. Surprisingly consistent.
Thanks for watching and commenting, Will. Yeah, I wasn't surprised. Just a little saddened. People are really struggling with groceries.
In October, I checked the batteries that I stored away 3 years ago. I have four brands. Only the Duracell had lost power, and in some cases, had corroded.
Can you do a Winter Prep video. For the ones who don’t know or under prepared. Thank ypu and keep it up
It's been on my list for years. I know others have covered that topic in great detail on other channels.
Are you sure about the price decrease for the multivitamins? The camera is moving, but it looks like the 3 year ago price was $11.49, a 30% increase. The $19.99 tag on the shelf is for the Centrum, not Kirklands. Thanks for the eye-opening look at how inflation is hitting our wallets in a short period.
Excellent video as always, Cliff! It reminds me that I need to replenish my stock of Top Ramen. I have plenty of soup and chili, so there won’t be any need to break into my stock of Mountain House for a long time!
Thanks for watching! I hope that I don't need to break into my Mountain House either!
Wow!😮
I still love that intro music.
Thanks a bunch!
Prices aren't going up, the value of the dollar is going down.
30%
Gotta love it when the government turns on the money printer and sends everybody a few thousand bucks, then we all pay for it in higher cost goods for the rest of our lives
Thanks TheUrbanPrepper for this video. Great stats to work with. Here's another one for you: over that same 3 year period Costco stock (Ticker COST) went from about 336 to 551 for a total increase of 64%. I don't exactly know what that means, but I think it means Costco is a good company with a great marketing strategy.
Good info! I didn't even think to track this along with the stock price. Interesting!
It’s only transitory inflation.
18%
Yes feeding a young family well is increasingly hard to do. It kills me to see, and often wonder if this could be avoided with changes in political spectrum, but I digress. Thanks for the good info and keeping us up to date.
It's getter more and more difficult!
Wow! I also wonder the change in price for beef, eggs, and bread.
SAMS Club in Columbia Missouri would be a lot more. In 2020 our usual SAMS cost was Four hundred dollars last month it was eight hundred dollars.
Wow!! That's horrible.
Where do you find dot strips with so many colors?
If you have a lot of space for storage, think about fertilizer for growing you own food. It can be stored outside in an air tight barrel.
