Govindam Adi Purusham - Live Video

  • The video and audio for our adaptation of the classic "Govindam Adi Purusham" (originally released by Yamuna Devi Dasa and George Harrison in 1971) was captured live at the Saraha Nyingma Buddhist Institute in Eugene, Oregon in February 2017.
We had the band of our dreams that night, with Beyoncé's lead guitarist Bibi McGill, Grammy-winning bamboo flute master Steve Gorn, LA über-bassist Jared May, and Eugene's own Luna Marcus with wonderful backing vocals.
When we reviewed the video footage with BullseyeMediaPDX's Curtis Kidwell, we were also introduced to the magnificent Oregon cinematography of filmmaker Tyler Hulett. His exquisite imagery fit absolutely perfectly with the sense of awe inspired by this composition - and so this song video was born. We hope you enjoy the magic of that night, the music, and the timeless imagery ...

A humble; but proud to be, a disciple (personally initiated) by; HDG AC Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada. Who brought "this", amazing prayer and the MAHA-MANTRA to the West. My Sri Gurudev, would like this rendition; and I'm sure He does, since He is an eternal personality. Jai Srila Prabhupada
This maha-mantra; is beyond any Country, caste creed, religion. SP would say; "nobody has a monopoly on God". Krishna is not Hindu. A word, that came about, btw: because the Muslim conquers had no "S" in their vocabulary and referred to the people south of the Sindu River, as "hindu".
The Supreme Personality of Godhead can not be limited, to any Country or religion. It is a blessing, that Krishna came and appeared in India (so many times), no doubt, an auspicious birth, to be born in Bharta-India. Mother India! Sri Chaitanya, ordered everyone form the land of India, to spread this message of Sri Krishna Chaitanya Mahaprabhu. But, it was Srila Prabhupada; who the only one to fulfilled this order. It still stands: anybody from India who is not involved with this Sankirtan Movement, spreading the glories of the Lord Gourasundar, is in total Maya. They are missing out of the ascension process, an opportunity that comes, and blowing it! An opportunity that only comes, after every 8 Billion 4 Hundred and Fifty Million yrs.

Little did I know then what grace would guide and protect this simple soul through the Maya and Lilas in this amazing Samsara. As the Tibetan Buddhists have said, "Samsara is Nirvana and Nirvana is Samsara." Kashmir Shaivism says: The world is Shiva's garden, when viewed with the right outlook.
May we each and all be blessed by Shiva. "Swami Lakshman joo said, "No matter what intensity of Shiva's grace you have, it will take to his nature in the end."

Thank you for this beautiful rendition of "Govindam" which is an excerpt from the oldest hymn in the world, in the Vaisnava tradition, the "Sri Brahma Samhita". Sri Govinda / Lord Krishna inspired this beautiful hymn about Himself when He gave his darshan (audience/vision) to Lord Brahma after Lord Brahma had been meditating, for 10,000 years, as the first being in our universe. Pleased by Brahma's austerities, Lord Krishna, Govinda, appeared before Brahma and inspired Brahma to write this and many other verses that comprise the Sri Brahma Samhita. Unfortunately most of the chapters were lost, but Lord Caitanya found chapter 5 at the Adi Kesava temple, in South India. Mukunda das Goswami (Michael Grant) wrote the music for this song and five other disciples of Srila Prabhupada that went to the U.K. to meet The Beatles recorded this along with six other songs which comprise "The Radha Krishna Temple album, recorded in 1969 with Geroge Harrison also playing various instruments, on the original recording and other participating.

It seems there is a new renaissance taking place in the West. The common people of the west taking on the Indian culture to their hearts. The various authors of the west very cunningly had hidden the treasure trove of the Indian culture away from the general public of the west. But after centuries of neglect ,the beauty and wisdom of this culture is getting opened up to the people of the west. I must thank profoundly the youtube specifically among other social platform in allowing this revolution which is taking the world by storm.I only hope that the Evangelicals will not try to disrupt this by back door efforts.

This song has a very pleasing effect on the mind and it also made thousands of devotees when it was originally released byb the Radha Krishna Temple 1972. Srila Prabhupada said it should be played in every temple every morning forever.

A lovely version of this prayer by Lord Brahma to Lord Krsna. I am very glad to see the credit given to Yamuna Devi and George Harrison. As soon as Srila Prabhupada, the great Vaishnava Acarya who spread the Gaudiya tradition around the world, heard Yamuna and George's recording, he immediately introduced it as a standard part of the morning worship in Hare Krsna temples around the world!

I had this song going around my head and so as one does, ran to CZcams, our saviour in moments of our musical need. I guess I was around 7 when this first came out. Prabhupad had visited London and we’d been to see him around Euston. The Hare Krishna’s were always around, Yamuna, her husband, Gurudas, mukunda we even had Ishan stay at our place and kulashekhar often paid visits. Now, even my mother used to sing this song along with all the pronunciation inaccuracies she had no idea as to what it meant other than it was about Krishna. I’m indian Hindu by the way. Now, many years later even though I’m slightly more sanskrit literate I still have the mispronounced version in my head. The problem is that short vowels have been made long and words have been cut in the middle to go along with the music and rhythm. The problem with a language like sanskrit is that meanings change with minor changes.
    Here’s a couple of examples
Govindaam should have a short a vowel and be Govindam/ (Govindum)
Sadu jwala means mendicant water but it should be Sad ujwala eternal light The conjoined Sadujwala has been cut in the wrong place.
Sakalen driya has no meaning to my knowledge
Sakal endriya however means All Sense organs
All things considered, the fact remains it was 1969, we had just had London’s first Rath Yatra and the temple was at 7 Bury Place opposite the British Museum. So for any european to take as much as a glancing interest in our culture was valuable for our pride particularly since it wasn’t that long ago since the British masters had left Indian shores after looting, Churchill’s Bengal famine suicide and dismembering the country into at least 3 parts. India was never left united but in the hands of around 50 rajas hence at least 50 countries. Prabhupad was done great service in bringing the Bengali Devotional movement out into the world. Had he been more open minded and more non Christian in his approach to religion and ‘truths’ I’m sure his movement would have been far more robust than its present situation. I wish I could say that over the years my respect for Prabhupad increased more and more but sadly that would be a lie and if anything it diminished more and more being replaced by a sense of regret instead. Yet when I’m transported back to my childhood this song still provides me with an anchor.
