Tom McKean didn't "barge through", he was on Kwizera's shoulder with ample space to go past and Coe was also in clear space. This was a damned good run from an athlete who remains high on the British all-time list and who deserves to be better remembered.
He did - European 800m Champion Indoors and Out 1990, World Indoor Champion 1993. He also had 800m wins at IAAF World Cup 1989 and 4 x Europa Cup 1985 - 1991.
i agree totally. the global major eluded him..not even a medal which he richly deserved. however, there were some questions raised about his temperament when it came to big championships,. also, he was as quick as anyone off a 1:44-1:47 pace, but he struggled if the pace was faster, and most global finals were/are below a 1:44 pace. nevertheless, i think his pb was a respectable 1:43.7 if i'm not mistaken..
yeah i knew he won that, i watched him win it tommy. What i meant was a major major such as an Olympic title, or World Championship medal. He was such a strong talent. I know he had a bit of bad luck in the Worlds in 1987 and 1991, and the Olympic failure to qualify for the final. That wasn't because he couldn't do it, it was bad luck and other circumstances. I'd love to have seen him winning an Olympic medal
Coe would have done better in a fast race. He was all over the place 1st lap running wide etc. He was past his best here and McKean at his peak. Coe won the one that mattered 1986.
Coe was coming back from injury. But he did get better that season ultimately running his fastest ever 1500 metres. If selected he could easily have won a 3rd straight 1500 metre Olympic Gold medal but the disgraceful selectors ignored him and we ended up with 1 silver from Peter Elliot instead.
I doubt Coe would have easily won the 1500m in 1988! A lot of ifs and buts with that race, big guns being injured or not performing to their best, but respect to Peter Rono for being the best athlete on that day.
@@rogerfederer8117 Coe should have been picked for the 1988 Olympic 1500 metres. He had EARNED that right. He was the DOUBLE Olympic 1500 metre champion. No-one has EVER done that before or since. Many times Coe had come back from injury and won. In 1982 and 1983 he missed massive chunks of running because of various illness but he came back and destroyed Cram in LA in 1984. The selectors SHOULD have made an exception for Coe. Why? Because he was that good. What happened to the 2 runners selected in Coe's place? Did they win Gold and Silver? Gold and Bronze? Silver and Bronze? No did they f**k. One silver between them. Would Coe have won Gold in a race won in 3 mins 35.96? We'll never know because the selectors made a right arse of it!!!!!!

tom mckean should have won a major title, what a talented runner
I remember Tom front running in the 800m at the 1989 Scottish Championships, going through 400m in 49.91 and finishing in 1:44.79!

Thanks.
Saw 'sprint' in Uddingston a few weeks ago - hope he knows he made Viewpark proud.
Agreed. He was certainly capable of winning one. McKean justified his Olympic place here. Coe should have been in the 1500m at Seoul though.
Seb Coe held the 800 metres world record for donkeys years.

Berlin GP Final, 26 August, 1988.
1:43.88 in 1989 while defeating Olympic Champion Paul Ereng.
What a race that was!

This race reminded me that David Coleman only had eyes for Seb
Coleman was more of an Ovett fan.
He'd earned that level of respect.
I must have watched this back in the day as I remember the hod carrier comment - and the disappointment of Coe not winning.
I always wondered why tom McKean don't run more ,1,500m he was perfect for it
born to run becane 2.nd best this time......

Coe was well past his sell by date here, a spent force.
Actually, he ran 1:43.38 in 1989......so not really......
Eric George then look what he did in 1989 !!!!!!!
That fantastic 1500 at the aaa then got picked for the world cup !!!!!!
@@natew5694 he was at his zenith in 79 to 81. Sure later on he could run fast times but he was beatable as McKean shows here.
Brilliant runner, but always got boxed in at highest level
At his best off that 600m split Coe would have run about 1:46.7
