  • In today's episode, I'm sharing how to grow orchids from seed. I'll give a quick guide on dry seed sowing and green pod sowing. This is what I do to sow orchid seeds. I'll also discuss why I do what I do and some possible ways to prevent and treat contamination.
    Please note that some clips in the video are a “re-enactment” of the process as it is hard to shoot video and keep a clean working environment at the same time.

    Your sterilisation sounds the same as in growing mushrooms , if I had contaminated ie mold I isolated what mushroom spores etc that were growing to another dish in a still air box , that helped a lot with trichoderma green mold , isopropyl alcohol I used mostly for sterilising and worked pretty well most of the time , even wearing a mask since even your breath can carry bacteria. 👍

    Great process and documentation! Sometimes my orchids outside here in Glendale end up pollinated, but sowing the seeds on my tree has been more miss than hit. I just messaged you on IG about maybe collaborating somehow.

    I can’t just put the cymbidium orchid seeds I bought in a pot of dirt?

    • @AttainableGreen
      @AttainableGreen  Před 2 lety

      Unless you live in a climate or environment where orchids grow rampant in the wild, it would be difficult to grow orchid seeds in dirt. Most Cymbidium seeds are tiny and dust-like, so it would be difficult outside of “lab-like” conditions.

    Can plants grow from dried pods? Where would you recommend getting a green pod from?

    • @AttainableGreen
      @AttainableGreen  Před rokem

      You can grow from dried pods but depends on how it was stored. Some seeds decay faster than others so germination rate decreases as time goes on. Usually you get pods from your own plants and other people you may know. There are a few forums but beyond that, it’s hard to find a reliable source.

    I have brought monkey face orchid seeds from amazon are you saying they are not real

    • @AttainableGreen
      @AttainableGreen  Před 2 lety +1

      Unfortunately, I would have to say that the seeds are not orchid seeds. Might be something else. The largest orchid seed is about 6mm or about the size of a radish seed. The ones I have encountered are pretty much like dust and even the larger ones are pretty hard to count individually. The monkey face orchid (Dracula species) typically have small seed pods, so the seeds themselves will be very tiny. Most sales of orchid seeds are questionable unless dealing with a verified source and typically send seedpods rather than individual seeds. Sorry, hopefully it wasn’t too expensive.

    • @lilyflower5895
      @lilyflower5895 Před 7 měsíci +1

      Monkey face orchid (Dracula orchid) seeds are a scam. On top of that, the plant itself is a difficult one to grow. It requires high humidity, cool temperatures and low light which is a breeding ground for fungi. Won't recommend those for beginners.
