Germany helped kmt to build up a modernized army
During the Long March, one of the generals advising KMT units to hunt down Chinese communists was a German general.
In fact, not a whole army was created. Germany needed resources, and we needed soldiers.
And they were both Far Right Wing Countries at the time, and Furthermore Germany and Italy spent a considerable amount of military resources in helping other Far Right Wing countries. For Example Nationalist Spain in the Spanish Civil War.
Germany sent a bunch of advisors and equipment to the KMT before WW2 started. The KMT had a bunch of German trained divisions with that Gemrna equipment, though these eventually got ground down by the Japanese. It's an interesting look into how the Axis powers worked against each other sometimes

The Germans had close ties with the ROC for a time and the two would often engage in trade. The ROC would give the Germans raw resources and in expunge the Germans provided the ROC with modern military equipment and training. Hitler had equal respect for both the Japanese and Chinese and for a time he worked closely with both and he even believed he could help settle disputes between the two, but in the end when it became obvious things were coming to a head he chose to side with the Japanese due to their military superiority.
P.S: Sorry if this was long, but this is something that rarely gets mentioned and is easy to overlook.

Actually, during the partition of China by Western powers and Japan, the Germans occupied Qingdao (which is why Tsingtao Beer was made by German brewers in Qingdao), France occupied Shanghai, Britain occupied Hong Kong, Russia occupied Port Arthur (now Dalian), Portugal occupied Macau, and Japan occupied Manchuria.
France occupied Shanghai is not accurate. Several countries have their concessions in Shanghai.

Germany is there because at first Chiang was Germanies ally. It went a bit too shit when Japan attacked. Germany did evacuate some Chinese but after the KMT and communist party collaborated against the Japanese they went head on again and the KMT after almost defeating the CCP made a mistake and that lead to the CCP regrouping and fleeing to Taiwan while stealing the Chinese navy.
