Not only ancient architectural monuments need restoration , but also the city as a whole , the urban infrastructure . But I have heard that there is a new state program for the restoration of ancient Russian cities to increase domestic tourist activity .
Not discussing current events when I think of Russia I think of Red Square and Tchaikovsky. My favorite composer by far.... Also some really good hockey players

Hello Sam and thank you for another great video. I think that Milena is perfectly right: Russian writers, musicians, painters, scientists...are well known all over the world. Also its history is importanrt:;the Soviet times, the Russian Empire..Then for its different cultures, amazing landscapes, peoples and so on. A country that could offer more and more.

You're wrong. Kievan Rus, Novgorod and Moscow Principality are different states and political cultures.
It's sad to see that Russians feel guilty sometimes when they talk about their country. But I think it's an amazing world player, has a great history and a beautifull Milena

My Top 10 for what Russia is famous for from the outside looking in:
1. Beautiful culture (undeniable)
2. Beautiful winters (yet challenging)
3. Beautiful landscapes (mountains, plains, swamps, frigid zones, beaches on the Black Sea)
4. Beautiful people (undeniable)
5. Beautiful language (one of the most spoken in the world along with Mandarin, English, Spanish, French, Hindi, Arabic, Bengali)
6. Top-notch architecture (undeniable)
7. Ancient history (goes back to the 9th century or so along with Eastern Orthodoxy)
8. Huge country (from Kaliningrad to Vladivostok, Murmansk to Vladikavkaz, and Novosibirsk to Kamchatka)
9. Excellent food (all Slavic food is great, from Poland to Serbia and Slovenia to Russia)
10. Ballet & Books (Bolshoi to Tolstoy and Dostoevsky)
Only someone filled with hate could deny these things. I have studied about the Soviets and Russia all my life. Politics aside, all I have ever seen is a unbelievably interesting place and culture. I have never been to Russia (it is at the top of the list with a few other places). I have been close to Russia. It was in the plans to get to Russia before Covid hit. Hopefully sooner than later. Mate, you are confused. Your thinking is ahistorical and anachronistic. Russia exists only from 1721. Please be aware of distinctions between Rus, Muscovy and Russia.

Modern English, Russian, Chinese, Persian, Indian, Japanese, Korean, Ethiopian, Jewish, Egyptian, Greek, Iraqi, Syrian, Inca, and Mayan, etc. cultures are vastly different from their ancestors, but the cultural traits, complexes, systems, and transmission -- artifacts, sociofacts, mentifacts -- of those ancestors can still be found today in those societies. At least in part. The homogenization of many ancient cultures of the past has been diluted due to global trade that started in the Age of Exploration up to today's high-tech and highly connected world. I would make similar compliments about the UK. If Sam made videos there, too, I would compliment him on them. He is respectful and does a good job showing local culture.

No, Kievan Rus, Novgorod and Moscow are not "one prolonged culture". Just look at map, at time. These are different states, with completely different political culture in different time. Moscow was even at the beggining more Tartar, Mongolian and Ugrofinnic than Slavic. So Moscow needs now to justify its "tradition" by huge lie that it has "1000 years of tradition from Kiev".
Kievan Rus can't be precedessor of Moscow just because Moscow had occupied it for a few years. It was independent. And later that it stood part of Polish-Lithuanian Union for centuries - more than under Russian occupation.

I understand the big picture often, but that doesn't tell the whole story. My comments were meant to encourage Sam and to share that I think Russian culture has a lot of beauty. To me, all folk cultures have a beauty about them. I grew up in a warmer climate, so cooler climate cultures have always intrigued me. Conversely, pop culture is very different. It's about making money and status only. It's of low value to overall quality of life. It constantly changes, and is meant to be cheaply consumed. I get all of it I can stand on a daily basis. Очень мало бывает снега зимой, или его почти никогда не бывает, в таких регионах, как кавказские республики, краснодарский край, ростовская область и Крым. В Калининграде тоже зимы очень мягкие с малым количеством снега.
Россия известна математической школой, балетом, вооружением, нефтью, газом и атомной энергетикой. И тем, что она 1/8 суши, конечно.

Vladimir looks absolutely beautiful in the sunshine Sam and, of course, it is one of the Golden Ring towns/cities steeped in history. I can fully understand why you love living there. Leaving politics aside, I think your interviewees just about covered everything for which Russia is famous. When I think of my time in Russia I always remember it being my first taste of real caviar and how it was commonly served as a garnish in restaurants.🍽👌

Yes, I tried both but preferred the black with a unique mild aromatic flavour. In one restaurant, as part of an entrée course where the table was laden with all manner of dishes, there were hard boiled eggs halved and garnished with the black caviar sprinkled on top. It took the humble egg to another level completely. We were entertained very well by our Russian client.

Dostoyevsky praises suffering as an essence of life, Tolstoy thinks obsessively about death, Chekhov writes that life is not worth living and Goncharov believes that doing nothing is better than being active in life. Russia has never developed a rational and empirical philosophy because their thought is essentially religious and irrational. Russia is a bizarre amalgame of Byzantium, Golden Horde and Europe with the European element being quite superficial.

The West has a vison of man which is rational, empirical and utilitarian. In contrast, Russians' man is irrational, torn by contradictory desires that cannot be reconciled and often having an urge for self-destruction. There is psychological depth in Russian literature which does not exist in any other literature.
Existential angst exists only in Russia. It is present in all Russian literary texts, starting with Gogol's Coat, through Dostoevsky's Notes from the underground, Pushkin's Onegin and Lermontov's Hero of our times.
However, while irrationalism gives depth to your literature, it makes you incapable of forming a modern nation and a functional state.
I love your literature and cinema (Tarkovsky, Sokurov) but I would never live in Russia. It is a cruel autocracy in which human lives matter little to your mad dictators.
Russia is the only country in the world which systematically humiliated, exiled and executed its greatest artists and intellectuals. And millions or ordinary Russians. Life is intense but cheap in Russia.

When I think of Russia it's the wonderful old buildings, beautiful countryside and it's food and drink. The people seem very nice as well. I do own a Soviet rifle and it's very well made.

I’ve tried that. Some people become very angry for filming them without asking permission first.

I also have a feeling that they may think that you will interview them and post negatively on some anti Russian network such as the BBC or CNN.
As for the American who was reluctant to travel to Russia, it certainly is a moral quandry whether it is justifiable to contribute to the Russian economy by travelling there and spending money. We are upholding sanctions against Russia for a reason.

The Ukraine conflict for example, is very profitable for American weapons companies. The tax payer money goes to them and many people in congress have shares in those companies. America also sells weapons to all its NATO allies! Then they have taken over the European gas market too. The American elites make the money! It’s a shame

Family was in the fur business for about 50 years. I've been out of it for at least the last 70 years but back then Russia was famous for its high quality furs. I don't know about Russia and its furs today?
The majority of furs now are synthetic because of modern mentality!

In the UK, most of us probably hurry on by because we'd think you were trying to get us to set up a new, big Direct Debit. I don't know any other country that's produced such a huge novel.

Slightly echoey...compared to your previous stuff. Also it pifks up more ambient background sound. And its very sensitive to wind, manbe it was a very windy day. a wind sock maybe? IMHO Keep to your original eqpt.
Some parts were with the mic and some were without, I hand wind noise to remove too. I’m constantly receiving complaints that without the mic, the sound is bad.
Interesting that only one person mentioned science, culture, art and literature! I would add Vacuum Tubes (Valves) for guitar amps.

Why don`t you get a DJI Mic2 ?
They are only good if you don’t plan your speak with other people. I have them and use them for interviews. But for on the spot questions the mics are no good.
Sam, I suggest you do this test ... try dressing up more, maybe wear a nice shirt with a collar. Ask Melena for help. She will know what looks good on you. Then try approaching people on the street with your questions and see if more are willing to stop and talk to you. I think you'll soon discover that your appearance can really make a big difference when approaching strangers.
It was 30+ degrees. I was wearing shorts and t-shirt. I think Russians are far more likely to trust a blogger than someone who looks like a foreign journalist.

In my country - Bulgaria - the accent is on the Russian history and culture. Russia liberated us from the then Ottoman empire - for which my people are forever grateful.
It is a shame, that my country is under the direct command of the USA at the moment, "thanks" to our prostitute politicians, who act as colonial governors, not as representatives of a free and proud nation. They make me feel so uncomfortable, because of the evils they do. They betray our country and interests for decades to come, such a shame.
I hope Russian people can understand and not hate us.

Russia is famous for its literature, ballet, folk songs...And USSR was also famous to giving weapons to South East communists to overthrow capitalist or monarchy countries in the 1950-70's.

Oh wow! I’m sorry you feel that way. There was a treaty called Start. It’s the strategic Arms Reduction Treaty. The US refused to renew it when it expired. I think the only reason Russia would use such a weapon is it was invaded by NATO, it’s mutual assured destruction. I hope you can find some things that are positive about Russia. I could say that the US is famous for Guantanamo illegal jails, constant war, racism, police brutality and mass shootings but, I’m not only aware of the negative aspects

@@SamsRussianAdventures No, based on street interviews like in '1420 by Daniil Orain'. I am amazed at the naive, biased responses, utter lack of knowledge on how Russians are viewed by people outside of Russia. A lot of it is explained by Russia's low standard of living and inability to travel outside of the Country. Very few older Russians have left their cities much less the Country. The ones that do can only afford to travel to low cost destinations like Egypt, Turkey or the Baltic Countries. Doesn't really give an understanding of how they are viewed in Countries like Canada, the US, France, Australia or New Zealand.

Americans due to their standard of living, travel almost as much as Europeans even with their more favorable vacation time. I've been to over 15 countries alone from Australia to Mexico. My sister is currently in Northern Italy. In addition the US offers so much variety from tropical Hawaii to our Pacific Rain Forest. Many Americans do not have to leave the Country to experience vistas like the Grand Canyon or the Rocky Mountains. It is not like your tiny island in the UK...

Half utterly ignore you when you ask them an easy question. With most Russians in government 'make work jobs', time can't be an issue....
@@lornewazny7152 I must say that I totally agree with you one hundred percent and have written very much myself on this post and on others where Sam asks people in the street and he gets about one successful 'kill' out of about every ten people he tries to stop and talk to. Some of the older generations can be nice but as you say, on the whole, they are a very strange lot indeed! I always remember talking to an old retired Metropolitan Police sergeant who was a radio operator on the convoys to Russia during the Second World War. This was back in 1979 and I told him that I was about to sit G.C.E. 'A' level Russian but he was not very impressed or stirred. I can still remember his words and reaction to this day: ''We used to go into port to unload our ships and they came on board and gave us a polka dance as a way of saying 'thank you' but there was really very little love between us.'''

This is a hat that is used for the banya. Russians immediately understand that this is a banya hat and this type of souvenir is on sale all over Russia. The red star is used on Russian military hardware. Many of my friends have the same hat too, it’s nothing like the Swastika. The Soviet Union wasn’t an evil empire! Soviet symbols are not considered evil! But I suppose everything can be considered evil if a person looks for it.
