    If you think you might be dyslexic but your not quite sure or if you know someone who is and want to find out more, then this is the video for you.
    Dyslexia is defined as a learning difficulty that can cause problems with reading, writing and spelling. This is very true but I think it also comes with special gifts that I will discuss in the next video.
    So, do you think you have dyslexia?
    Do you often read paragraphs more than once before you understand it?
    Do you avoid reading aloud?
    Do you something mix up or forget letters when writing?
    Do you often misspell common words regally?
    Do you read slower than most people?
    Do you have trouble telling your left from your right?
    Do you struggle to read long words out loud?
    Do you find it hard to repeat back what you have heard?
    Do you lose your place or miss out lines when reading?
    Do you forget the name of common household items?
    Do you have a strong preference to colours / shapes / fonts?
    Other characteristics that I should have asked as they are very common are:
    Do you get confused when given several instructions at once?
    Do you often walk into a room and forget why you went in?

    When I was learning to drive, my driving instructor would say "Now we are going to turn left at the end of this road". I would understand and hit the indicator on for right...this happens so many times and still does.

I was just diagnosed last month with Inattentive ADHD, and I think I may also be Dyslexic too. I was shocked when I learned that their are different types of ADHD. I thought you HAD to be hyperactive to have it, so I just never thought that I did.

      Being dyslexic dosent always affect reading and is different for everyone. There may be certain things do and don't struggle with. A test would help you clear up some of this but for most of us it's a learning journey of discovery and finding ways of overcoming / covering up these issues as we go along.

    I answered yes to several of those questions never really diagnosed with dyslexia. When I was in seventh grade in the mid nineties, my teacher told my mom to get me evaluated but they said that I was just immature for my age. Later as I got into high school and ready for college getting Nothing higher than a c at the most. Suffered horribly with reading comprehension and writing. I was at home on summer in college, watching tv and the Cosby show was on. It was the episode when Theo learns that he is dyslexic. It was a light bulb moment. I realize that I could relate to every thing that Theo described was happening with him. So I did research and took what I learned from the show about organization and don’t worry about finishing my degree in college like many students. I took 2-3 courses a semester and color coded everything for each class with a separate notebook or binder. Changed my major four different times and ended up getting my AA in early childhood education at 28, stopped going to school and worked as a preschool teacher for several years, four years later, at 32, I went back to school to complete my bachelors degree in elementary education. Graduated with my degree in elementary education at 37, since I worked part time and went to school, had no social life on the weekends since they were devoted to my homework aside from the two hours I had at work while the students were napping. Now at 41, I am currently a first year teacher teaching reading and writing in a third grade. I teach my students that as long as you do your best and keep trying that you can overcome any obstacle.

    "Disorientation" is a really good way to describe the feeling at least. When I was a kid, on top of my dyslexia, I had a difficult time understanding why you can't add more information into words. So instead of putting words in order you just add the descriptive word into it. So it would be "App5le" instead of "Five apples." It took many years to understand that you shouldn't write this way and I was really confused why you couldn't just combine things like this. I also can't recognize people including family members outside of context. It's made life very difficult.

    • @PeteLuther
      @PeteLuther  Před 4 lety +1

As a dyslexic person, all through school, I could read fast and high levels than my peers. But if it was read out loud to me or I had to read it out loud, I wouldn't understand it.

    Does anyone else have problems speaking? they find themselves thinking one thing and saying something else; it's happened to me where I've said the wrong think like 3 times before (knowing it's wrong) before I said what I wanted to say to begin with. Even names I get wrong even If I've known people for a long time I'll call them someone else name and then I can't remember their name (it's usually temporary and short time - then I remember it)
    My thought process and speech pattern is also choppy because I can't remember simple things. What is wrong with me???? :-(

      If there was a teacher who you could apeoach or a learning support department in your school that would be a good starting point or if your dad can help that's also good. It depends alot on your area. 9 is a good score so it might be good to investigate further. Having an official test costs but sometimes your school. Can do an assessment that gives them an indication of support you may need. Let me know how it goes.

They messed her up more than I would have if I had continued homeschooling. NOTE, she is not our biological child and I was afraid to try to teach her when I did not understand it well enough. I wish now I had stuck with it and had her cyber school use a different program for her They later 'threw out' the program she was in because many parents complained it was too intense for the kids. I've hardly ever heard anyone mention the fact of being able to read out loud fairly fluently, but if asked about what you've read you've no idea (Reading Comprehension). I can read OK in my head, I do lose my place etc. Ask me to read out loud and I can sound fine and make intonation, but if you asked me what I'd read or questions about it, not really a clue. The other thing is taking notes while someone speaks. I can take notes, it's painful to do and messy, I wouldn't know what they'd been talking about as I can't take in the information and make notes. I'm also better when things are more interactive than just being talked at e.g. a lecture.
    I think many people with Dyslexia, where it wasn't picked up or they weren't helped when they were younger adapt and if you tested them or asked some of the questions you just did they might fall through the net as they've adapted. Many Dyslexics are highly intelligent, creatively adapting and finding ways to help themselves retain information or how to work out reading words etc.

      I noticed with my daughter that if she reads something her comprehension is 10% or less. But if she listens to something her comprehension jumps to 90 % or better. I think it is because she has to work so hard to get each word that she loses the meaning of the whole sentence. What we do for her school work is, she does the work alone, then I read it all back to her so she can check her answers. Cyberschool is a blessing this year as I can give her the accommodations of reading things to her that she was not getting in public school.

I have a very low vocabulary and processing speed. Although I agree to most of the things you said in the video, but I dont really think there are any gifts we are born with. I dont know about others but in my case, I dont have any gift. I am also not creative at all. I used to be pathetic academically throughout my school life until I realised I just need to be more focused than others. I suffer from so so so many problems due to dyslexia I cant even begin to tell. I lose my attention midway a conversation and then have people repeat. This is fine when happening with friends/family but not on a professional level. I cant pronounce the simple words properly and have had people mock me for these things. I wish I knew about my problems earlier in life then I would have chosen a different career path. I chose journalism and in journalism, you just cant be dyslexic. You need to have a good command over a language (i dont have a command over any, not even my mother tongue, bengali), you need to be attentive while taking interviews (i am very very inattentive and forgetful) and you need to be good with words (words scare me). I loathed journalism until i quit. I am sorry, but i dont think it is a gift at all for me.

    My parents have known that I have had dyslexia since I was really little, when they tried to get me help it started off by being told that I read well enough for a girl, then that I was too smart. I then I was told that they wouldn’t help me unless I was failing, then at a few weeks after turning 15 was given an iq test which if I scored a certain amount on then they would help me, I scored a 120 which is more than most adults so I haven received help. A National honors kid who was born smart can just deal with the issues that they have because they are already doing well enough. To be honest I find that reading subtitles and doing brain reading workouts by myself is helping though.

    I've been learning and investigating dyslexia for the past 2 years or so to figure out if I have it and the more I read and learn about it the more I think I actually have it and I mostly do have it.. and thinking of my childhood I think I might've had it since then but because I was in a third world country there was no way I could've known that because there isn't much information or awareness about diseases like dyslexia, ADHD, bi-polar, depression, etc. But I taught myself about these diseases because it's very important to learn about them and increase awareness especially to the third world countries.

      @PeteLuther  Před 3 lety +1

      I agree that its so valuable learning about yourself and what conditions you may have and then to learn about them and how to work with them. There are ways to get tested officially but its not essential. If you have most of the symptoms then the support is going to help you.

  • @oohsquirrel

    I've always wondered if I might be dyslexic. As a child I had terrible spelling and handwriting, and I have trouble remembering verbal instructions. I also do this thing a lot where if I'm trying to pick up one particular thing and there's something else next to it I'll pick up the other thing, for example a fork instead of a spoon or a highlighter instead of a pencil. However, I learned to read and write both English and Arabic when I was 3-4 and don't recall that I ever struggled with either. I love reading aloud, and I excelled in school and college. I do often forget what things are called though, and in the past couple of years I've noticed that I have more and more difficulty focusing on new material when I'm studying and end up having to read parts over and over before they make any sense... But I feel like a lot of those things could be signs of other conditions from ADHD to depression.

    • @PeteLuther
      @PeteLuther  Před 2 lety

      The memory part is definitely part of adhd to so there is crossover and if you have depression then that can affect some of them to I agree. There definitely limits to what this test can do but hopefully its a good starting point. This year I have have very little sleep (because I have twins and a 3 year old) and it had brought some of these simptoms out even in my wife and I've been extremely forgetful etc. Been quite interesting to experience.

    @spoops752 Před 4 lety +1

    Oh, I got 5. Oof
    I strongly relate to the one where you're usually accused of not listening. I absolutely hate it and I always thought I just had memory issues. When i'm conversing with someone and it's a long thing, like a story or just very important, i will normally write down small bullet points on *main issues* that they're discussing.
    For eg:
    "So last week Monday, I went to the vet with my dog Lucy. They said she's just fighting with some fatigue and loss of appetite but that with the correct help, she should be back to her normal happy self."
    I will write something like:
    - Last week monday
    - Lucy (dog) > vet
    - Dog not doing well
    Or if the topic is really important (anxiety, depression, bad thoughts)
    I'll write down certain things and give advice on each point (if they want advice).
    This does bother me a lot as I feel like such a bad friend and partner almost all the time because I can't even remember important details that they *just* told me but i am working on improving that.
