FINALLY WE KNOW what iconic Bell sound Ben keeps using! :)
this is the kind of video that really sets you apart ben. thanks for putting this energy out there
I struggle with allowing myself to sound bad when making music and your videos have been really helpful with that. I want to thank you so much for that
For me is the other way around. When I'm super sad, that's when it's easier for me to compose. I have a couple of tunes that I've composed after sad events like getting dumped, getting heart broken, a friend that passed away and so on. Usually these song takes 1-2 hours to compose completely.
On the other hand, if I'm not particularly sad or anything, a song can take months or years before is finished
yeah i think it's because sad and depressed are to different things, like when you're feeling sad you have a strong emotion and it can motivate you but for me he talks more about beeing depressed in the sense of not wanting to do anything, when nothing feels important and life is just boring and meaningless. In these case, it's really hard to do anything productive
Oh wow, now I know why I make noise all the time.
That's my secret, Cap, I'm always sad
Making noise music was how I finally got out of my creative rut. Gotta just let go and scream sometimes!
Ben has been killing it lately with inspiring videos with specific applicable techniques. Thanks Ben! 🥰
This is very inspiring! Cant wait to try and make some mudpies
The video i didn't know I needed.
Thank you
Trying exotic scales I found out any chord progression works on a long enough time scale. I’m dedicated to listening to more concertos symphonies and suites so that better understand great composers . Right now I have a few cool ideas but struggle with transitions. Got to keep practicing
I get sad when I am with a social, musical group for almost two years, then when I suddenly leave, no one there either cares or don't notice.
I wrote a few songs about that.
I'm sorry that happened to you! In case you're referring to the song challenge community, please know you're always welcome and I appreciate all the creative innovative songs you've contributed in the past!
@@BenLevin I was, and thanks.
Some of the most thoughtful music creation content on the intarwebs
Love it especially the personal bit at the end
I don't say this enough, but: Thank you for your videos, Ben. They are always so inspiring, so creative, and they always get my brain working on something music related. You rock. :)
I love making those “mudpies” with granulized samples. Awesome video bro
I don't make music, but I do do some drawing. I've found I enjoy just drawing random lines and squiggles when I'm feeling really unmotivated. I think that might actually work as a sort of drawing version of a mud pie tough! I can easily see going back to these squiggles and creating something interesting from old periods of lack of motivation. Thanks for the inspiration!
Hi Ben, thanks for this video. I'm currently on day four of being full time. At the very start of my journey. But I'm determined.
Today was the first day I stayed in bed, i worked on some mixing practice for an hour and played drums. Then I went back to bed.
I said to myself before, if this keeps happening I have no chance of being creative full time. I put myself down, that it wont work, yadayada. Its a blow, I need to have that consistency.
But now I watched that video, and I see, this is normal! I gotta reduce it as much as I can, but if I just keep at it, and to my deadlines, it will work out, I'm sure.
And also, there are systems for these moments! I practiced mixing from cambridge-mt, you made a mudpie. These are productive things that dont require a good mood.
Thank you, that video helped a lot. Keep blessing us with these
This is a super good mix of sharing life-learnings, multiple interesting production techniques, encouragement through relatable struggles, and cool results you've had. I appreciate you introducing me to the concept of mudpies, I'll have to watch what Mr. Bill says, your examples really show the versatility you can have by swapping scales, sounds, and arpeggiation.
We can't always have a great time til next time, but we can always hope!
i do something very similar when I'm depressed - I just use a random sound source and add glitchy fx without thinking much then resample it, repeat several times, cut it up and save the media items in my sample vault folder (and also share them with my friends). Somehow working destructively (in terms of how i treat the sounds) like that works much better when I'm depressed - i guess because i don't have to think about anything being perfect
You are such a wacky funky dude my fellow Ben. Your videos make my brain more weird which is good, more individuality. A stronghold for bens everywhere
I have more hours of mudpies on my hard drive than finished material. Free-time live keyboard drumming mudpies, modular mudpies, mudpies made from going through all the patches I made on my analog synths and playing random stuff, break/beat manipulation effect chain mudpies, you name it. I also have a folder called "junkers" which is just random noises like the sounds of roller coasters and other foley, different types of noises and room tones, and aural errors I decided to keep.
so you had too big a pie and you took too small a slice...
This is relevant to my current musical endeavors, like, today. I love your whole damn thing, Ben.
bless you ben, really felt this one
This is a perfect musical exercise that doesn’t require me to be in a creative mindset.
I made a few mudpies after watching Andrew Huang's video about them years ago. I recently began going through them to isolate parts that I think can be good fx samples, stabs, pads, drones, etc. Never thought of just dragging the whole thing into a project and chopping it up over a beat though.
This is very very good. I love it
Feeling this one today
Hope you feel better soon Ben! Lots of love ❤
Ben you're sending waves of inspiration and positive thinking. Thank you so much for what you do for me and others ❤️
Your Videos are Therapy ❤
I may or may not be binging your content. I'm really inspired to make some mud pies. love the specificity and honest sharing!!!
Thank you, dude! Some really good perspectives here, and I also love that you shared the struggles you face - really identifiable
Mr.Bills mud pie method leaves me with 0 space on my computer lol. This video is reminding me to slide those audio files to a drive.
This is a cool video Ben. Thanks for the new ideas
i love your videos, man
Thank you for sharing
thank you Ben
Thank you ♥️
i only write music when i'm struggling...sadness/depression seems to make me want to expel the feelings out and into music...most, if not all of the tunes I've written were done during depressive episodes. music, for me, tends to be like a diary...it's there to deal with/remember the tough times. it's amazing how different we all are...i prefer to make art/drawings when I'm anxious...music when I'm sad and when I'm happy I just like to walk. thanks ben :)
Wonderful idea
Word!
man! last night I made that thing you said on another video, about going to the windown and listen to every noise em silence! It was amazing! I stayed there for a long time, and in the and I was listening everything, even the far sounds, as if I was listen them in my headphone! I started to imagining the mix of them and undertand how much pan and volume each one had lol xD really nice experience! Nice video again! I'm gonna make some mudpies!
Hoodaloo!! It’s so great to see you
and ben
i have trouble making sad music bc I'm not sad anymore, and that makes me sad. 😢
ben u the best
A lot of times when I’m feeling real bad, I can make a miscellaneous section with like 8 layers, sort of like filling up a sound bath to sit in. But then afterwards I’m never able to take that section and build it out to a full song. I’ll try using these as mud pies and seeing what comes!!
I’ve never heard the term mudpies but I’ve been doing something similar since I first started using DAWs 20 years ago when I was 13 😮
Just on time
Ben, you're a cool dude. I hope you have a nice day.
Ben, this sounds good. Try making it again
I hope the title accurately reflects the essay, because I’ve had a hell of a month - I think it’s 29 days now that I’ve barely been able to get out of bed? vigorous exercise helps for about an hour, then I swirl down into the abyss once more - and I don’t understand how people function, I’ve not felt this bad before in all my (now long) life, and I just need it all to stop. 😢
i mostly just explore sound design because there isnt anything i want to make most of the time. i also can't really do anything intentionally when im too depressed. bouncing the melody of random old sessions and throwing them in a granulizer is always a go to
Love this. Perfect video to start the day with inspiration.
I often have the opposite problem. I only seem to be able to access my creativity when I am in a bad mental space; as such it can be discouraging when trying to improve my well-being but not being able to make anything that I like when I am well. Good video though.
I just strum my guitar with my tears
Damn, this is what I do normally cause I’m always depressed 😂
haha the not-even-trying approach is like my default approach.. it works ... sometimes.
If you work with Reaper you should check out Bird's Global Sampler, which let's you sample your daw audio instantly. And it's freeee
When I feel this way I usually put away the DAW and start coding my own sequencer and synths. I guess I'm making bytebeat music
Alternate title: *How to Make Hyperpop Music in 4 Easy Steps*
This is a vibe.
I wonder if the principle behind this is that when your brain is fighting against creativity for whatever reason, it can help to set yourself some parameters that make it impossible to fail (in this example, premade chord shapes and pentatonic intervals). That way you can kinda just metaphorically (or literally) button-mash, and you're going to get SOMETHING that's not-bad, which will trigger even just a tiny drip of dopamine, making you feel like maybe everything isn't completely hopeless.
kiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiing ass video benji
Hello Ben, may I ask what would it take, to cooperate with you on a music video, for a song of our two man band? I really like your style and animations, and I was just wondering, if is it anywhere near being possible. Anyway, thank you for inspiration of sad songwriting. I usually just lay in a bath and write nonsense. But, the bath is good.
Every time I try to focus specifically on sound design it ends up turning into a piece of music. Not always good stuff but I like the idea of calling these mud pies.
NOISE
Yeah. Love this experimental approach. But you are throwing away the opportunity to craft your individual sound objects! There are so many options and possibilities to make your music so much richer and more interesting for the listener! Each sound is precious but you rely on the context to give them meaning, rather than work on them to give them meaning in themselves,
Of course, it's a bit of both and it's easy to get lost down a rabbit hole!
luvyawork!
I tried your twelve tone harmonization thing and ended up with a cool baseline I couldn’t harmonize, did I fail or succeed in a different way
Can Ableton do this
Yeah of course I make wacked out crazy drones so I can sample and stretch and warp pieces of it later. Who doesn't?
I was even thinking about releasing one as a short, because I just sped one up so much, it's only a minute long now. And I've never released a short. I'll have to listen to it again.
First and good morning!
all my songs are mudpies
When I’m depressed and make music it’s either incredible or absolute garbage.
CAN'T BEVIEVE ITS ALREADY MUDPIE TUESDAY
Me and my ex gf used to make mud pies. Then one time she got salmonella so we stopped.
Shouldn't have had so much Mud Pie
