Some friends in the mid 70s had a jug band called the Okie Doke jug band. Later in that decade, we formed a group and we called ourselves the Hokem Hooligans. We mostly played in our local bar and made a few dimes, but the most fun we had was with audience participation and cutting up with the drunks. Man, what I wouldn't give to go back to those days for a single night.

Thank you for posting this...I'd travel from England to a jug band event in the States as long as it wasn't just a day. I've been listening to Gus Cannon, Frank Stokes etc for years...big fan of jug band music.

Very cool! I had heard of Whistler’s before, but a lot of new info for me.

Nice presentation. One correction: the photo over Sylvester Weaver's name at c. 3:20 in the narration is of guitarist and six string banjoist Johnny St. Cyr from New Orleans, a top guy who played on many famous records by Louis Armstrong, Jelly Roll Morton and others in the 1920s.

... And the other photo used for Weaver is of Willie McTell!

I wish this event were a week long at a campground or college with plenty of time for Jam sessions. The closest I've come is the July "blues and swing" week at the Augusta Heritage Workshops at Davis & Elkins College in Elkins, West Virginia, which sometimes include a Jug Band music class and jamming opportunities.
Is there a weekend-long jam session scene surrounding this one-day event? Or is it too urban & expensive for low-rent musicians to hang out?

Hey Bob! We do usually have some jam sessions on the weekend of the Jubilee. We try to do a jam session at a local brewery - it is very welcoming and open to all. And then a very organic late night jam usually happens at the hotel after the Jubilee as well. Hope that helps! Thanks!
