  • High Iron Simulations have now gone from building whole routes for North American Train Sim complete with bottom of the barrel rolling stock to "enhancing" old routes built by Dovetail Games almost a decade ago - complete with bottom of the barrel rolling stock! And charging full price!
    It sucks.
    Let's go have a look.

What sucks is I’m enjoying it, and I think it looks fine. But that’s not because of HIS.
It’s because RWEnhancer is making the shadows and graphics look better.
It’s because AP Weather is making the sky and sun look stunning.
It’s because the Mikado from MachineRail fits in great.
It’s because UTS F7 enhancements is making the original F7’s from 2016 look and sound better.
It’s because years of apathy has made me immune to bad trees.
All these additions which each cost a fraction of the price are doing the heavy lifting. But this costs more than any of them. I still can’t escape that I paid $36 for this slop.

So glad you did a review on this. I have the original FRC route; got it when I started my foray into what was then TS2017 and FRC was one of the 3 routes included with my purchase. While I think it is a very good route, I mainly stuck to operating in the area where Quincy Jct is located. In 2020 I stepped away from TS and bought T:ANE and have been exclusively playing it (recently bought TRS22, but haven't gotten into it yet). When I saw the news of an updated FRC coming out, I thought "maybe this is the thing to get me back into TSC", but when I saw the price upon release and the weak 'discount' offered to those who have the original FRC I decided it was a no-go. Funny you mention that it's worth $20-25 because this is what I posted in the steam forum:
"While I don't think it should be free, a 15% discount for those who own the original is a bit of a slap in the face, especially since this 'new' FRC is a just re-vamp with 30ish new track miles with an asking price of a new/fresh/non-revamped route/DLC offering.
If the price was lower or if the discount was bigger, I'd consider getting it. Heck, if there was a way to get just the new track mileage and add it on to my already existing FRC route, I'd pay $20 for that."

I kinda like the new rolling stock and the expansion, now as for the GP40-2, to me is a huge disappointment, now as for the other locos they are ok in my book, except what they did with the GP9 crew figures, I hate what they did with the interior crew mode in the GP9 , at least have them face the same direction. Quality aside, there are a huge number of various inaccuracies on this route, from the silver Clio trestle to the Rio Grande No Trespassing signs, Portola yard being the 1955 track arrangement, included locomotives are more apt for a early 60s WP, scenarios are Gary's patented "research," which means every single train is completely fake besides the symbol, and the power is just random eras of the WP thrown together, and then there's that Oroville-James looked more like that section of track on the original.

DTG has been losing my interest as a customer with the Train Sim World releases.
They went from a company releasing products for a single game to making copy paste cash grabs.

My opinion: the previous owners discount is a joke. Even with these days of higher becoming prices (because of incompetent politicions and governments), previous owners especially those buying the old one on first days should pay maximum around 25 Euros [dont know how much dollars they are]. Is the actual discount really only for users visible that owned the original route? [I have it, so I cant say]. Even with the announcement of the route people could by the original one to get the (little) discount [would be interesting how dissapointed they are now are that it is so low]. Perhaps the pricing-discount should have been stuttered, for exmple: buyed on first days/first year 40%, some years later 30-10%. Buyers who buyed the original since announcement: zero% [they can buy instead the new "better" one with more length for only little bucks more]. So my only conclusion: best thing is to wait some months. Then they will kick it out for up to 50% discount as with lot of other DLCs, to be sure

This pack not only is a route from HIS but it's a "enhanced" version of a pre existing route (that in my opinion was not that bad) with a ton of old assets and rolling stock. It's so sad that for the most part dlcs are made this way, without putting effort and passion, just made for a quick buck. The only things that are actualy well done, are the mods made by 3rd party developers, like SS, DW/MR and other minor developers that put a lot of effort to produce either free stuff that requires just a few dlcs from the stem store or payware products that sometimes are cheaper than some dlcs from HIS or dovetail. I personaly hope that someone will create some good, not absolutly exelent like SS, content that feels like it's been made in 2024.

i think this review is a bit unfair where as comments are concerned, i mean no disrespect or anything above, the original route had just 2 engines like the F7 & U30B and you had to pay seperate for other DLCS for the original, and i follow High Iron Simulations quite closely and to give credit to them they did quite a good job refurbishing the route it badly needed and given the route new locomotives & rolling stock instead of the original 2 locomotives & rolling stock that came with the original route although re-used to give it a bit of choice, but the original route had nothing if not little diverse resemblance to it's exchange railroad the Burlington Northern in terms of rolling stock & locomotives, and yea i do admit the crane is very old and 2D and should be upgraded to a fully rendered 3D model of it to make it like new than it's predecessor did when it first came out, and should be made & tailored for other railroads that had the same crane like the irl crane did in it's time as well.
Again this is my opinion and i will say again i meant no disrespect at all, i just think this review of the route and comments made were a bit unfair when deep in though HIS did a good job with the refurbishment, i am just being honest in my opinion and just telling the truth from what it is.
And to point out even tho i might get my ass chewed for this view and i am probably not alone in this opinion. I do have High Iron Simulation products such as the Western Maryland, Penn Central, & Santa Fe packs from them, and i know they look cheap but looking at them, they are better than you think, and it's a lot better than making mods of them and selling them on websites that people are gonna steal from or buggy in general, well as High Iron Simulations i think they deserve a chance and some of it's products had evolved a little but not much i do agree, but i think it's a good value for money in general and again i do follow them on Facebook quite closely and i get updates on developments that they do and i think it's pretty good than most other DLC's out of them all, so i think Schnauzahpowahz is being a bit unfair with the locomotive's & rolling stock in general from my point of view,

No matter if you find better mods or ask someone for commissions that end up being either expensive or buggy on arrival, sure the horns can be updated slightly and engine sounds but you can get any better than that, sure as i said it looks cheap but if look at it a bit harder, i think you begin to appreciate the effort put in even tho it is $40. You can trust me on that as i'd been playing TS: Classic for years since 2012 and out of all the routes i'd played on and Donner pass was one of them and it is the worst one ever made, and i think same goes to the older routes before or after Donner pass, i meant no disrespect to you or your opinion @@aquaspire7671

Saved the 40$ and bought Helldivers 2 instead. I see Buzz is still knob gobbling trying to play it off that the rollingstock is still acceptable. The woodcar doesnt even have an actual break wheel and the paper thing excuse isnt even attached to the car. FoR tHe NeW pLaYeRs. such a shit excuse.
