  • Have you ever wondered how items actually got "duped" on Closed BattleNet? In this video, we go over the exact exploits that were utilized to pull off some of Diablo II's most notorious duping methods over the years. Surprisingly, almost all of them used the same two weak programming points. We even cover how to best protect your items if they are duped... Something known as the "The Temp Perm Method", or "Perming Out". Shout Out to *Nimhrats*!

    I honestly think devs are leaving exploits in the game deliberately and then selling items on the side. These item selling websites have a seemingly unlimited supply of items with perfect rolls. It would be trivial to determine who these people were, ban them permanently, delete their items and patch the exploits they're using. The fact that this doesn't happen suggests corruption at the company.

    When I first started playing d2 back in the day, probably 2001 or 2002, I had dial-up internet. I would give a friend an item and then immediately unplug my phone line. When I reconnected and made it back into the game we would both have the item. This was before we had heard anybody talking about duping, and we never lost any of the items. And to this day I've never heard of anybody else duping this way.

    • @larion2336
      @larion2336 Před 2 lety

      You sure that wasn't D1? I used to dupe items in D1 on dialup, but it was the drop item and pick it up method - could be that if you disconnected it might work similarly. It used to be way easier to do on dialup than broadband (I remember my dad had just gotten broadband around that time, and when I played it at his house I could barely do it because there wasn't the delay when picking up an item).

    I remember some other duping methods during the years I played (2001-2006). The easiest one was to use a sorc to casts meteors and a necro to cast bone walls until the game was lagging so much that you could drop an item on the floor, leave the game and still find the item on the character, while someone else in the lagging game could also pick it up and leave the game!

    When I was a kid in 1.09 or 1.10, duping and poofing were so over my head, it took on a lot of mystery and superstition, and fear for trading in sojs or hrs. Good to know some more detail on why that went on

  • @mitchellatchley5455
    @mitchellatchley5455 Před 3 lety +3

    I've played D1 and D2 since day they hit the shelves. With D2, I've seen the many waves of dupes and method of doing so. Pre-Expansion it was all about the SOJ. We didn't have ladder resets or ways to clear out items from one season to the next. So, SOJ's were duped via the trade window method, the horadric cube method, and the vendor method. SOJs as a result just became the currency of the game and due to the duping, rapid inflation where gear would cost 2-15 SOJs. With the introduction of Expansion and later unique item ID, they really tried to ratchet down on it, but it took many years to finally get it somewhat right. However, I think a lot of the weird latency issues you experience nowadays in the game are as a result of these anti dupe/cheat methods adding additional overhead to the server processing your request. Which does things like leave your barb stuck in a perpetual WW or weirdly ignoring your cast on a caster. I've worked in the computer programming and software engineering world for over 20 years, so I can tell you first hand the struggles with dealing with legacy code. I have to imagine it's very daunting to propose any changes to it without introducing new bugs, unexpected behavior, or changing the gameplay in a way that it ruins experience for players. In my world, I deal with a lot of legacy COBOL code, and you face the same type of problems and it basically results in just trying to get the code to as near "stable" as possible and then just putting it into stasis and not touching it.

    • @Coooley
      @Coooley  Před 3 lety

      Some very good points. Recently, the rename-character function broke and I personally believe it's for reasons you mentioned... They're trying to fix some other part of legacy code that's busted and it ends up breaking something else. New servers and code will be a welcomed change when D2R drops!

    My dad and I used to dupe items back in the day. It didn't work on Closed Battle.net but would work for Open Battle.net and TCP/IP games if I remember correctly. Your character gets a save file somewhere on your machine that you would make a copy of and store elsewhere. The method was to enter a game with another player, drop everything, shutdown your game, replace the new file with the "original copied" file, and load the game back up. All items are now on your character and on the ground. You could dupe exponentially with this method but we never did anything since we mostly played TCP/IP games with each other. Anyways, that was my memory of duping in D2. :)

      I have no idea what realm trade or the game in general is like nowadays, I just mess around on single player classic sometimes. But here's some history: if you were there in patch 1.09 (2001-2003, maybe..? Basically right after LOD came out) there were no skill synergies whatsoever and very limited item setups. There were a small handful of skill builds that were capable of getting to 99 by running hell cow level inside a couple days iirc (ww sword barb, light fury javazon, multishot bowazon, nova sorc, orb sorc). Because it was so simple to optimize these very basic builds the small number of items required were duped extremely heavily, and the value of everything was measured in # of stones of jordan because back then no one was really paying real money for gear and third party trading networks were just coming about. The people duping sojs and flooding the market really defined the D2 economy for a long time there. What a different game.. imagine a build guide claiming 20+ "extra" skill points because you had no synergies to pump. Or going for months without seeing a paladin lol.

To be honest, patch 1.10/1.11 changed the game so much I sort of lost interest at the time and didn't play it again for a good 10 or 12 years. Luckily back then you could get a whirlwind Barb to level 99 with absolute shit gear just doing your part in Hell cow runs.
      The only Stone of Jordan I ever owned in my entire life was one that I found myself with a hardcore necromancer on classic in the first ladder season. I remember duping my 1.08 arcanes valor that was ethereal.. the thing had insane armor and gave a % bonus to health based on level instead of a flat amount like the 1.09 version did. I hope some of these insane items make a return in the ressurected version, they were so fun to chase after.

  • @MrDuckle
    @MrDuckle Před 3 lety +1

    Back in 1.10 you could dupe without hacking. Required 3 people and all you needed was to have a necro, sorc, mule. Have the sorc and necro start spamming meteor and bonewall outside of act 1 camp while the mule sits in town until the server desyncs then have the mule login into their account on a dual client and join a game then drop the items, the sorc and necro then slowly stop casting spells in the original game until the server syncs back up. The mule can then leave and go to the game where it dropped the items and pick them up successfully duping.

    I and my friedns duped tons of items in the classic Diablo 2 before expansions around in 2001 or so. (don't remeber the exact year. I was in highschool)
    I'm Korean, so we always had so many pc bang(pc cafe) around us.
    3-10 of us go to a pc cafe.
    Back in that time, it was possible to loggin two different gaems with one account.
    Account1 joins game1
    Account1 joins game2 at the same time as account1 joins game1
    Account1 drops item on the ground and leaves game.
    Account1 saves and leaves with items equipped.
    Repeat N times.
    So basically, we were dropping items on the ground in game1, and soon after we are saving the equipped state in game2.
    It was a very simple way. And back then the anti-dupping tech was not good, because there were just not many online rpg games like we have now..
    We coppied bunch of items on Asia Server and got bored so fast.. only few of us kept playing d2.

    • @larion2336

      The only dupe I ever did in D2 closed was using redvex to dupe baal's eyes and whatever other uber parts you needed (I forget now). I had a whole bank of them and they lasted forever. Funny thing is I think I never got around to using any, so they just sat in my bank till Blizzard (the bastards) deleted my characters for inactivity. Came back a few years later to play and lost interest when I saw that.
