  • The first time I watched Daria, the series, was around 2018. I was looking for some series to watch and at that moment, I weirdly remember watching small Daria clips off of CZcams throughout the years then boom! The synapses started connecting in my brain and said ‘oh, yeah, I guess I could watch Daria’, and then I did.

Daria is a show I wish I could have watched more often in my early youth growing up in the 1990s because it managed to be relatable and subtle at the same time. There are several intricacies that this show had to offer, and I am really happy that I managed to have a rewatch of select episodes eight years ago. Therefore, Daria is a show that has managed to hold up so beautifully and deserves to be called not only an MTV classic but also an all-time classic.

I think that having Jane not go to college would have been a mistake because a lot of her conversations around the topic make it seem like she wants to go to college and it would feel weird to me if she just suddenly gave up on it. Some of the morals and stuff the daria focuses on are somewhat dated and so a storyline against college probably just wasn’t in the cards. I think this is more of a storyline about Trent and his relationship with Jane because he definitely talks about her not going to try and convince her not to bc he will miss her and also has some of his own reservations about the idea of college.

It was a great show, and the features they made go deep into the characters.

I really agree with you when it comes to Jane. I think she should have refrained from going to college as well but it's a very American thing to be expected to attend a college or university straight out if high school. Trade schools are still looked down upon. Also bless Brittany for leaving Kevin lmao

I think the creators debated it but with Jane's home life, I think they were worried it would give a you can't break generational trauma trope. Plus Jane always wanted to feel special since episode 1, so being the first to go to college does help with that! Plus college back in those days was still career driven but degrees were a lot more flexible into more careers.

@3:52 - "controversial" -- I graduated high school one year before Daria ended, and the pressure that all US high school students should be going into college was an absolutely wild but real, inescapable conversation. And when we discuss US student loan forgiveness, I think it is important to remember that pressure, the lack of support from labor to enter careers in craftsmanship, and the mythology of the meritocracy resulting from education promoted by educators, politicians, and parents. To expect 18 year olds to navigate that pressure is insane, much less "to know better". There is no need to tolerate those suggestions in a debate.

Now personally when it comes to college whether it's community college or a four-year University whatever. I prefer just going into a trade that way you don't have to owe them back too much than you already do. Everybody I've known who's gone to college is still paying back their loans no matter what. I mean for some it's a good idea for some it's probably not worth it

im so sad since i've finished daria series. but i'm glad your video was recommended for me, nice review. do you have any recommendation of tv shows similar to Daria?

well, if i wanted to watch a series similar to daria... id probably just rewatch daria again just because no show can truly emulate what it does, though a good alternative is watching shows /with/ character(s) similar to daria. Parks and Recreation comes to mind, april ludgate is suuuch a funny character!
