    So much joy, first that it was Friday and we got a new video but also that it included books 😄 I've been trying to be better about reading personal development books and not just ignoring my problems by reading non-fiction. 😬 Plus it makes it easy when someone I trust recommends books lol. YAY!

    I really enjoyed this video! The way you describe why you picked these books speak to how self-aware you already are. Also totally agree on money being a huge growth-edge. A couple of books that really helped me with limiting beliefs around money were "the abundance factor" and "money a love story". I have recently also become a huge fan of the enneagram for helping me guide what behaviours and patterns i should pay attention to and what i can incorporate more te feel freer. I started with "the wisdom of the enneagram", but have also gotten a lot out of "the complete enneagram" by Beatrice Chestnut. There are so many more amazing self-help books. I don't know how you narrowed it down to 5 😉

    Your Erroneous Zones, tbh, sounds like a whole lot of toxic positivity and isn't rational to how humans are. We CANNOT be without errors/flaws/etc. And to try and get there just creates self-berating and guilt and shame. Hard pass.

      I agree! Also as a chronically ill person the bit about 'never tell people when you're ill' rubs me up the wrong way bc... I can't 'positivity' my way out of being ill lol. It would definitely be interesting to hear the therapist authors thoughts on that book - I bet they wouldn't like it either.

    Omgosh Caitlin, you are speaking my language in this video 😊 I love self-help books so I could give you a couple pages of recommendations with a whole lotta themes, but I’ll try and narrow it down here for y’all.
    ‘Being Happy’ and ‘The Pursuit of Perfect’ by Tal Ben Shahar. I like that he has little pauses where there are prompts for you to go journal and reflect on what you’ve read.
    ‘Change your Questions, Change you Life’ by Marilee Adams. Recognizing when you’re on the ‘judger’ or the ‘learner’ path- fits in with the complaining habit you mentioned.
    ‘The Confidence Gap’ by Russ Harris. This really helps with harnessing confidence AND comes with free worksheets when you go to the accompanying site.
    ‘The Success Principles’ by Jack Canfield. An oldie, but a goodie! I think this was my first self-help book I ever read and well, here I am :P
    ‘Stop Saying You’re Fine’ by Mel Robbins. This woman takes no BS from ya and is very motivating. She has a great ted talk as well.
    ‘Changeology’ by John C. Norcross. Another old book but really helps people understand goal setting and the process of change.
    I have so many more but one of my most recent reads was ‘How We Change (And 10 Reasons We Don’t) by Ross Ellenhorn. Makes a lot of sense why we sometimes feel stuck.
    Anyway, thanks for the video! I'm going to check out the two that I haven't read! Also, that Brene Brown quote about sharing your story with people who have earned the right to hear it... love that! I share that with everyone I work with in the mental health world.

    There's one book that really resonated with me and that's "The Notes on a Nervous Planet", I can't remember the autors name, but I remember lot's of his points whenever I feel scared and close to panic.

    I really loved "Make Your Bed" by Admiral William H. McRaven. I think, similarly to "Atomic Habits," he really makes things realistic for everyday life in his discussions in this book. And also, like you mentioned before, this book has several points that overlap from many other books that I have read previously. It's a great read on top of it all, with his own experiences painting a story that really captivates you and makes the book near impossible to put down.i definitely recommend this one if you haven't yet read it!

    Brene brown changed my life, even though I have an Masters level training in psychology and cognitive therapy -- its so important as a mental health worker to have your own support because when we're "IN IT" it doesn't matter how knowledgeable you are - we cant see our own blind spots!

    This is very good I'm an African American woman and yes I know David Bach he is really good and yes I 've read Wayne dyers book . This is so funny both Authors have had some impact on my life and I'm much older than you. This is when you can really appreciate the legacy and contribution that these wonderful people have shared with us to help us live . They give us a little blue print on how to hold ourselves together when we may feel like we're lost or sunken . Keep doing what your doing . It's 👍 great.

    Lots of things resonated in your conversation about the Dwyer book (the note about guilt is particularly liberating), but… I think the age of the book shows in relation to how he talks about how we shouldn't talk about not feeling well. There was a different level of stoicism back then, as well as significant exclusion people with chronic illness and disability. For someone with a chronic illness, helping others to be aware and understand how you feel can be an important way to get support and break through isolation. As someone with a Danish background, I very much relate to the stoicism, but have also become increasingly aware that shutting down conversation on certain topics can really mess with your life - anyone's life, really. Of course, there is a big difference between a habit (lifestyle?) of complaining and a conversation that aims to educate or seek help.

    I read 'your erroneous zones' last year and it really made me think about a lot of things, specifically the guilt vs. worry chapter, as a person myself who constantly worries about certain things, it really opened my eyes and taught me how to work on that zone

    The Midnight Library by Matt Haig is such a good book, and really makes you think about life. It's a book I'd recommend to everyone

    Oh and another book - 7 Levels of Intimacy - Matthew Kelly. GREAT book!
    While I am newly divorced (yay) and fairly sure I'm not going down that path again...the book is still useful to use on yourself. As always, we are the number one person we need to care for - just imagine that your inner self is your s.o. (that you just can't see/hug) and practice this information with them.

    The first self-help book I ever read was "The subtle art of not giving a f*ck" by Mark Manson and though I do have some different views than him, it was a really good start into the world of self-help books. Also I love your videos!!!💛

    I would 100% argue that the money book is a self-help book. The genre is full of books about psychology, yes, but also plant-growing, money, crystals, the necessity of having a living will in your 20s... etc. I've only been into "self help" for about a year when I discovered the By the Book podcast, where they cover self-help books in a comedic and insightful way, and they cover it all :) I really recommend the podcast if you haven't listened already!! It helped me more than any women's studies class, helped me with my self-confidence and the importance of self-confidence, and also discusses a lot of minority issues.

    I always loved books, the smell, the feeling of holding them, how they look amazing on night stands and how they make you feel intelectual 🙈 but I never found a genre that I liked enough to continuing reading after page 20 😂 I just discovered self help/personal development books about two years ago and they are it for me👌🏼

    3 - “Think Like a Monk” by Jay Shetty
    Currently reading “The Magic of Thinking Big” by Dr. David J. Schwartz and I already know it’s a 5 stars one!

    The life changing magic of not giving a f*ck gave me an extra inside of how to live my life without always wanting to please others above myself. There is another book from the same writer, I think it's called the life changing magic of not giving a sh*t or something like that, and I would love to dive in that one too!

    If you can read in Spanish I recommend you "Vive con propósito" by Noah J. Brown. It's a classic and great book of self-help. It a top ten.

    I challenge you to read the books by Stephen Guise. All of them. Mini Habits (his updated version is called Elastic Habits and WOW), Mini Habits for Weight Loss, and How to be an IM-perfectionist. Honestly, mini and elastic habits are way better books and totally life changing.
    As for therapy - your mentioned pre-conception is totally different than the ones I've always heard. Most of the time I hear people complaining about how they go to therapy and feel like nothing gets accomplished. Personally I don't want to dance around and wonder if I'm going where I'm "supposed" to be. I want someone to break it down for me "Here is what's wrong, here is the plan for fixing it". THEN we can do the dancing of how to get to it.
    I was diagnosed with Borderline Personality Disorder. Getting the diagnosis, the "here is what's wrong with you" was amazing BECAUSE....it now meant I knew what path to get better. I am happy to say I no longer meet enough requirements to be considering diagnosable, however.... I still struggle with many of the symptoms. It's a life long process of staying on top of the skill we are taught to manage it and not letting them lapse so that we sink back into the H*** that this disorder can be.
    I am currently trying....TRYING to read 5am Club and struggling so hard. It's just sooo....out there. I don't like the weird characters and odd story line. Just give me the info, don't take 500 words to tell me 75 words of info. Sigh.
    Lastly, I don't think it's always complaining when you tell someone you don't feel well. Unless you are doing it in a totally complaining way. Sometimes it's a simple statement of fact. I also don't particularly like that 'advice' as it can be destructive to someone with already bad mental state. They may feel invalidated and just put down. Again, taken from my experiences with my disorder and others I've talked to.

    Any recommendations for middle schoolers? I’m in 6 th grade, I read Percy Jackson and the contouring series’s for that and then all of Harry Potter and more! Right now I’m reading the trials of mortgage crow the never more series. Btw ily❤️❤️

    Last year I picked up Latte Factor because you recommended and it helped me digest the topic the easily. It is one of my favourites too.
    One book that really changed my perspective of creativity was Big Magic by Elizabeth Gilbert... I loved how she condensed that abstract topic into one enjoyable book. It’s helped me regain a different outlook about my job. I would recommend all creatives to read it!

    The two books that helped me the most in recent times were Get it Done When You're Depressed by Julie A. Fast and John D. Preston and Laziness Does Not Exist by Devon Price.
    Get it Done When You're Depressed lays out 50 strategies to get things done when you're feeling awful. I have anxiety, not depression but it's still been really helpful in my lowest moments to be like "ok I don't want to do anything but I *need* to do this right now or things will get worse" it's written by a woman with depression and a psychologist and take a really compassionate view on people's situations and how to get by on the worst days.
    Laziness Does Not Exist is one I'm still reading but it's been a revelation so far. It challenges the ideas that all our value is in our output, that we can't trust our own feelings, and that there's always something that we can be doing. it's one of those "I think everyone I know needs to read this book" because we're all so caught up in the Laziness Lie

    I disagree with that first quote from the erroneous zone book. Complaining all the time isn't the best for your and the people around you, yes. But complaining is sharing a feeling. Just not a good one. And we should talk about negative emotions as well. Just pretending everything to be good, isn't! Maybe we don't know what to do against the thing we're complaining about and need that advice. Or we do know, but need encouragement cause we don't have the inner strength jet. And sometimes we just need someone that takes us in the arm and accepts that we are not feeling well and need to express that somehow. So I don't think we should complain all the time, especially about things we can't do anything about, like the weather. But I think, sometimes it should have the allowance to be in our lives. 🙂
