This was a solo set, done on the front lawn of the Tom of Finland Foundation museum, a residential house in Echo Park. I only really stayed on the lawn, it was very pretty, grass with blankets, many chairs scattered around, nice people sitting quietly, large bushes and trees around, a slight breeze. The atmosphere was very calm and peaceful when I arrived, and the entire time I was there which was very beautiful. I was very excited to see Tim play his set.
I set up my Zoom mic and my iPhone side by side on the chair next to me for this set, and due to the wind and my disregard to purchase a wind screen for my Zoom, I knew the wind would destroy that recording. What you're hearing is the iPhone, which I think sounded great.
I was in my seat peacefully, sitting, thinking, being able to look at Tim Presley smoke multiple cigarettes standing by the stage for about 15 minutes before he started to play, it was just a great atmosphere. The sound check made me realize how good I thought the PA sounded here in this backyard. Normally I feel that DIY small PA's always sound bad, but this one sounded clear and great. Tim put a little delay on the vocal which made the tone very very nice. He played this bedroom fender amp that sounded great and perfectly Tim Presley. I wonder if this is what he uses/used to record all of the white fence songs in his apartment (i read he did it in his bedroom, always wondered how loud he could have the amp in an apartment, thought this may of been the answer i was looking for).
He began the first song, and I was so drawn in. It felt like I was hearing my thoughts. This is because i've honestly just listened to Tim's distinct voice so much from listing to the albums over and over, that it is truly so friendly and joyous to hear this in the real world, natural, intentional, and in the moment - played just for me/u, the audience. I have described this feeling in the description of this video: ( • Ty Segall & White Fenc... ). Hearing the unique voice feels so special.
Starting with The Wink and now with I Have to Feed Larry's Hawk, I have noticed the aesthetic Tim has been recording, I would describe it as a very frail voice. He sings in this way over these two albums, especially in IHFLH, which I enjoy. I assume the next album will sound even more like a bird trying to sound human, and I look forward to it. I bring this up because, Tim sat and played so small and peacefully, completely fitting to this new idea of the frail voice. The delivery of the performance I thought perfectly matched the most obvious sonic idea he has been releasing, and I really enjoyed that. It seems like this solo setting fits that voice more than a live band technically would, but I will see in a few weeks!
I am writing this the next day, and the first song, having heard it for the first time yesterday when he played it, I feel is is amazing. I have had it stuck in my head ever since. It was great to hear unknown songs, all which intrigued me and were very entertaining, as well as ones I have only heard on the records, (hard water, a good night, laying down rock, i love you, fog city, etc.). The orchestra pedal was fantastic, a really great tone that draws me.
Starting a new paragraph to indicate importance, he played "It's Confusing When You Wake Up", easily in my top 10 songs of all music, and tied for first as my favorite white fence song. I have loved this song for a long time, I find it so beautiful. When he began playing this I began to have tears in my eyes, and still do whenever I think of it. I don't know why, it's just a smaller rendition, but it was just so important. I think it's that that song and album I have played so many times and have become a part of my identity and thoughts, that the fact that someone expressed this song by playing made me feel approval and connection, which made me joyous. When I think of it now, I feel proud and so happy of that memory that I got to hear that song played in such a beautiful way.
After the set ended, I thanked Tim very kindly for the set, said I thoroughly enjoyed it, and thanked him for playing that song. He said he was very nervous playing, and I said I thought it fit the songs well (in relation to the frail voice). I introduced myself and he recognized my name, as I recently DM'ed him on instagram wondering if his band will play an LA show. That was cool!
