    TKR 4 months ago. Still very painful, inflammation, achy all the time, I have 112 flexion. Very slim women always an athlete but this is a horrible painful surgery. I am exhausted all the time, no sleep, wake up all night from pain and heat in knee. I go to Rehab 3 days a week. PT say, some patients heal slower, darn this is brutal surgery. Will never have other knee done.

      I am going on 4 month recovery. I usually ache due to rain or coldness, but usually can do a normal day with 3 grandchildren to and from school. However I find sitting too long and sleeping with knees bent give me so much pain. You said you had heat in your knee. During those times I feel really bad burning on my inner knee as if the arthritis was still there. Once I straighten my knee it goes away in 5 minutes or so. Is that what you call heat? I feel why have it done if I am feeling the same ache and burning as before the surgery, and my son is trying to get my to get the other knee done. I am just wondering if this is normal, the burning.

      I am 2 months out and was hoping it was going to get better for me until I read your comment. I too have always been active, and I am experiencing the same symptoms you described. I’m lucky if I sleep 4-5 hours a night. I’ve woken myself up with my moaning. I understand that different people heal at different rates so why do they put us on the same medication regime? I think I would have a better outlook if I actually had something to take some of this pain away.

      @@cherylkemp1552 so what are you taking for pain?… I am so sick of not being able to have a cocktail or even a glass of wine because I’m on pain meds that do very little to help my pain anyway… Sometimes I think oh I think that glass of wine may help me even sleep… but I’m just saying… It never bothered me before… Helped me sleep… I’m at four months and I can’t cross my leg the way he just did sideways. I can bend it but it’s just painful and swollen the more I work out and I’m a thin fitness person who is just dealing with so much! So much pain and swelling!

    Just returned to tennis 4 1/2 months after bilateral TKR. I was walking and swimming well so gave it a go after watching your video. No knee pain after , just some serving arm discomfort from disuse. Caused a few chuckles on the court when asked if my doctor said it was ok to play and I replied the one on CZcams said it is .
    My main aim was to get back to tennis , so great to get back on the court.

    2 months and 12 days after TKR, we left for 16 days of hiking in Patagonia Chile. The hikes were all mountainous and we hiked over 50 miles. I had some stiffness but the knee performed very well. I did 2.5 - 3 hours of PT daily to prepare for this because I had the deadline and wanted to be able to do the hikes. I first worked on flexibility and getting the leg strait. Had 130 degrees within 10 days and strait. That was painful work. Then I mainly focused on quad strength and balance. The payoff was that 2 months after knee replacement I did hard hikes in the mountains and for the first time in a decade had no pain descending. Now that I am home, I am still doing therapy (the leg crossing one is one of those) and returning to more regular workout schedule. The key is setting goals and doing the PT every day.

    I had a catastrophe snow skiing accident in 1987. I had 5 surgeries in 3 years one being major. Nothing helped. I went to therapy 3x a week for a year. I was diligent. I’d been an elite runner (4:30/mile) so I wasn’t a wimp. Finally in 2015 I found a personal trainer who recommended I see an orthopedic surgeon as soon as he saw my X-rays he said why did I wait so long I should have had them replaced 30 years ago. I told him how many doctors, injects, PT, etc I did. I had both knees replaced and 6 weeks later I was back in the yoga studio. When I saw my doctor at 6 weeks I could do a complete proper squat and put my hands flat on the floor. He was stunned. He was 100% against yoga. After me he now recommends it if appropriate. I still have the same amount of pain but I can do more things. I did a 32 mile race which I walked and it felt so great to be doing something challenging. Don’t underestimate your patients.

    I am 79 years, going to be 80 in June. I am 2 weeks and 5 days out of surgery from my TKR. I have never had so much pain in my life....would rather give birth to my 9 children again!! This left knee keeps me awake at night, with a pounding tooth ache sort of pain. I have tried icing....with out relief. Getting out of bed, sitting in a chair, does offer some relief, but I have been told to keep the left leg as straight as possible. Last night, I did give in, and slept in a chair.....restlessly, though! I am able to ambulate in the house, with out the aid of my walker....but, the pain.....when will it go away? My surgeon, that I saw yesterday, said the tooth ache like pain is normal......everything looks good. I nearly cried, as I was hoping for some relief giving advice. My other knee, is bad, but I will NEVER-EVER have it operated on. I won't go through this for anybody......I am terribly stressed out.

      Hi I’m sorry you had such a terrible time I was the same as you and I’m 60, bit of a shock to the system and I had read well 😊, my surgeon did tell me TKR is one of the most painful operations you can have and that regular pain relief is key. I hope things are all good for you now 9 months on. I noticed the acute pain lessening at 4 weeks but the aching and feeling of heaviness and stiffness is still there at 12 weeks if I’m standing or walking for longer than 10 minutes unfortunately this discomfort worsened dramatically in both knees after using a stationary bike, lesson learned. My surgeon here in the UK is pleased with progress I have full range of motion, scar healed well and my physiotherapist is pleased with progress. My surgeon reminded me that healing from this procedure is a marathon not a sprint he advised not to expect “normal” till 12 months, to listen to your body, rest when need be, eat well, stay hydrated and take analgesia if needed. and continue my exercises, interestingly he does not rate extra walking as exercise at this stage. Good advice I think. Future good health to you, my other knee will need done but were trying conservative care at the moment, not sure I could face all this again so soon! 😁🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🇬🇧🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

From early on I was a star patient and way ahead of the game to the point that even my surgeon was impressed at two week visit. Now I feel like I am regressing even with therapy. I went back on the Motrin so now I can move a little better. I am not able to take narcotics so I did the whole thing with a four hour rotation of Motrin and Tylinol and recently thought I should start getting off of those but now realize it is too soon and because of this video I realize I need to be a little more patient with what is going on so thank you very much. I did it the hard way...first surgery December of 2022...then due to continued draining and then a fall that tore the quad tendon off the quad muscle led to surgery #2 an I & D in January...In March surgery #3 where they took the prosthesis out and an antibiotic-spacer in for three months with a picc line. In May the prosthesis back in and within two weeks a bad infection, and another picc line and another I & D and followed by oral antibiotics. Three months out and so far doing ok but did have to have a Manipulation Under Anesthesia for excess scar tissue. Not blaming anyone...my surgeons were wonderful and worked hard to help me through it. Hopefully in time the stiffness will get better and I'm feeling very optimistic about that. Good luck to all and smooth sailing!

The question/concern I have is, I still can't get up off of a standard chair or low sofa without assistance from my hands. I get a sharp shooting pain right across the front of the knee. It's getting a little better as I can now go from sitting to standing on my mountain bike but that's less of a lift. So, do you think this is normal and it will come in time? Thanks so much for your informative videos and calm demeanor.

    Hi, I watched your 1 month and 3 month videos. I'm 6-7 weeks out from a total knee replacement. Thank you for both videos as they have answered a lot of questions about things I've been experiencing or going through. You mentioned a knee sleeve to help reduce swelling. Can this be a Medi, padded support sleeve that has aluminum strips inside that I used prior to knee surgery? Could you please confirm at 3-4 months you are 80-90% recovered from knee replacement surgery? At 3-4 months, would a person be sufficiently healed and able to no longer need trekking poles or a walking stick? You mentioned at 3-4 months a person should build up stamina and endurance. In addition to walking, could a person go to a gym and lift weights again at this point? (within reason of course slowly starting out and pacing ones self)

      Many of my patients have found the diclofenac gel (Voltaren) helpful for that soreness and achyness on the sides if you do not have a contraindication to nsaids. The stairs are hard but they are therapy and every day try to go up one more step as normally as possible. I have some patients hold onto the railing and just step up onto the first step with their operative leg. Once the first day (should be easy), twice the 2nd day and so on and over a few weeks they get stronger, develop more confidence and then can navigate the stairs with ease.

    I have a question. I’m 49 and getting some pain going up stair and weak going down after going one step at a time sideways. When should I look at surgery? I don’t want to do more damage.

      Talk with your surgeon. With my patients it has been okay. It would be dependent on your, the approach and other factors.

    I am 56 and had a left tkr in mid October, so am at about 10 weeks. This week has been a step in the right direction, thankfully. I have 2 questions though, 1st is what is the max bend one can expect? I am at about 135, but really want to be able to do child's pose, is this asking too much? And 2nd, while sleeping, when I change positions, I get sharp pain on the outside and back of my knee, every time. It does seem to be lessening in intensity, but wakes me up multiple times per night. Is this normal?

    • @dradamrosen
      @dradamrosen  Před rokem +1

      The best predictor of post-op range of motion is pre-op motion. Although many current knee designs allow 140 degrees of bend around the world most patients only achieve 115-120. Your participation with PT and biology play a factor too. For question 2 I would check with your doctor.

    Heading back to work, 12 hr shifts NICU NP. 3 months post TKA. Would you recommend a support sleeve? I think that may help with the swelling and stiffness.

    • @dradamrosen
      @dradamrosen  Před 2 lety +1

      swelling can be a problem with standing. a knee sleeve might help. If you notice more swelling below the sleeve a compression stocking may help. If swelling persists you should talk with your doctor.

    I’m just not sure why my knee feels so heavy if that’s just from the swelling that hasn’t gone away? It’s been 3 1/2 months since the manipulation where they manually bent it for me, but I still can’t bend it all the way back now because it’s so swollen… I am able to hobble around and walk on it OK but it’s that heavy feeling that just feel like I’m dragging a ball in chain!and I guess how would they tell if my body is not accepting it… An x-ray?

    I’m a little over 8 weeks out on my second TKR. First one was in May and still healing as well. I’m having lower back pain that wraps around my hip and remember it happening with the first knee around this same time. I’m working on my core but limited on exercises. Is this common? Lower back pain after tkr? I know my gait has changed. I’m in my 50 ‘s and hoping that getting my knees done would give me back a better quality of life…. Now if my back would behave that would be great.

      Range of motion depends a lot on your range of motion before surgery. Some people may not hit 115 or 120 but still be happy and not have pain. If you are concerned it is always a good idea to get a second opinion to make sure you are progressing as expected.
