It’s not on the mixtapes lol they’re positing what gets views. It’s on the coaches and parents to teach their kids the right way to play. If you’re good enough the highlights will come
As a 18 year old, in my opinion this is correct. Social media completely put the focus on the individual. Everyone now wants to score at least 25 every game and have some highlights. A ton of young people don't care about the team and winning as a team. And while the nba is infamous for having little teamplay and defense, especially in college or europe teamplay is essential. And I think that part of basketball is just getting lost in the process of basketball (social) media
Ironically enough, I feel like because of this we get the levels of talent we do nowadays but they just need better coaching to put them in the right direction and tbf Europe is honestly better at giving a more real basketball feel nowadays then American basketball with their team basketball, league not favoring offense for money, and players being okay with being yelled at
You can say the same exact thing about And 1, after that Era. Alot of NBA players started thinking they were Hot Sauce and we got away from fundamentals, which even led the US getting embarrassed in 2004 Olympics. Old heads know this.
Thank you, this is so true. Hated this part of this game, it’s like people play cause they have genetics and skills not because they’re passionate about playing basketball. I saw a post few days ago where it said people admire and idolize Kobe but they don’t have the passion he had for the game. Probably not ever 1/4 of what Kobe had 😅
So true … And bottom line is like my varsity coach and AAU coach used to preach when a teammate would showboat “highlight play doesn’t win championships, intelligent & hustle play win championship’s. When two talented teams are evenly matched the men who do the things that don’t show up in a box score or in a highlight reel win the day.”
Jalen green was a highlight on the court. I was able to PA announce one his basketball games when he was still at SJM in Fresno CA. Dude literally put 40% effort and was hitting threes like it was practice at shoot around. Slamming dunks like it was all star weekend. And I’m talking about literally in front of my eyes watching this dude every play.. respect the kid please!
what I hate most about ballislife is the one when they started appreciating that ball bump. the one when you throw the ball to the forehead of your opponent to embarrasss the defender. that always start a fight in street ball now because many kids think that is so cool.
It ruined the kids more than the game. These kids are being taught that your job on the court isn’t to win, it’s to humiliate your opponent. You’re 2/17? Doesn’t matter cause you got a highlight, and when the tape comes out, your 15 bad misses aren’t on it but you can be certain that crossover will be. There’s a generation of kids now who know ZERO sportsmanship. Call it soft, call it whatever you want, if you go out on the court it is your job as an athlete to compete against, but maintain respect for, your opponent. Every time I see a kid in a pink and green jersey with the newest signature shoes and some fancy haircut, I already know what I’m gonna see. He’s gonna make 20 unnecessary dribble moves, and 9/10 times he’ll turn the ball over or put up a bad shot, yet the one time he makes it, he’s gonna do the “too small”, or flex on the guy, or do any number of tasteless disrespectful celebrations. I mean for crying out loud “disrespectful” is now somehow synonymous with great. It used to be that if you pulled shit like this, you’d get your ass beat. It used to be that if you got crossed up or blocked or dunked on or anything like that, you’d shake the guy’s hand after the match and go work on your game. Now if you get crossed up you get clowned and disrespected, the guy who did it will be staring you in the face taunting you with no repercussions, and hell I’ve even seen these little insufferable shits actually refuse handshakes at the end like they’re “above” that person. Bottom line is there’s an entire generation who celebrates bad sportsmanship and that’s a fucking problem.
It's the same for football honestly. Every player treats every play like it's a game winner...if you sack the QB when you're down 20 points, you shouldn't celebrate, you're losing, be humble.
It’s easy to have that view on the matter when you grew up not worrying about money. Austin Rivers didn’t need a mixtape to get college tryouts or league tryouts.
That's why I refuse to watch any of those mixtape channels. The number of those guys that are legitimately good is so small that it's not even worth it
I think that's why Euro players are dominating in the NBA now, European basketball has always been built around fundamentals over everything else and it allows them to run circles around the highlight reel wannabes coming out of the USA right now
Well as a kid who was constantly praised for playing the right way, doing the little things, and still putting up 18 ppg and 4ast and 7reb, the only kids who got offers were kids with cool highlights while i know i was better than them.
I feel like people forget that the NBA is for our entertainment. The demographic is changing and so are the things that attract the young generation. It’s a shift in the way we can assume sports. It’s becoming less about the fundamentals and more about the flush in this period
Honestly on the coaches. Coaches should be recruiting guys that do the little things and should be teaching their kids the fundamentals of the game but instead are intent turning these kids into commodities. The game has been fucked for a while and the reason why is because of the money. Long term success is going to come to those who prove they can develop well rounded talent but there’s always going to be people who just want the money invested in big AAU programs and they get it by finding “exciting” players instead
It’s not just basketball or even sports that this happens. Once everyone’s doing something so what makes you stand out?? Almost everything is competitive in life nowadays with social media and cameras everywhere.
Jalen Green is an nba player though. It takes a lot of skill and work to get there and stay there. Give him credit for being in the league and being the best on his tanking team.
I know the current generation of NBA players weren't held back by this but its interesting to see that arguably the 4 front runners in the MVP races are not American...The future of American ball doesn't look too good if these kids focus on the wrong things.
I'm in my mid 30s and pretty much refuse to play with anyone under 25 now. Just raining 3s all day, zero transition defense, and my biggest pet peeve of all, thinking simply being touched is a foul. A single hand touching you while you're dribbling is not a foul. Hell, in high school we were specifically taught a lesser form of hand checking and having a hand on the guy was not a foul.
He is absolutely right, People got mad at me when I say players like Luka, will never be champions, and Stars like Durant and Curry should never be MVPs unless they make the All-Defensive team. Everyone thinks all you have to do is score a bunch a points and thats enough, but tell me... Can you name one team thats won a championship without atleast one All-defensive player on the roster. NBA is full of 2K dreamers. NETS: Had Harden, Kyrie, and Durant 0 ALL D until Simmons You just stuck Kyrie on Dallas; ZERO All D players, how do you think their season will end?
Parents should use the mixtapes to show their kids how to dribble. The carying and traveling starts at such a young age. It then continues into Junior high, high School and college.
I can't tell you how many people I seen be so disrespectful and act like he's him only to get no offers or fizz out in college. Be humble and hungry guys.
Watched a video from mj's trainer throughout his career, he never worked on fancy highlight moves in practice, he just mastered the fundamentals and that comes naturally. Make of that what you will
It took me until I was an adult to realize basketball is 99% NOT highlights. Instead of practicing my fundamentals, I was practicing stuff I'd see on highlight films. My game was worse off because of it. You can probably find an hour long Kobe highlight film, but that's just ONE hour out of a 20 year long basketball career. If you get skilled enough at fundamental basketball the highlights will make themselves.

But there has been so many high scoring games this year and defense around the league has gone down significantly. It’s not a strange coincidence. Also HOF trajectory is a bit much this early on.
@@sjturner15 hof trajectory? with no mvp chips or any individual or team award only all star appearances
@@nasrallahalfarouq idk if you’re aware but the NBA HOF is extremely easy to get into. there are dozens upon dozens of non MVPs with no rings in the Hall. he’s about to be a 4x all star and he’s 26. every single 7x all star in NBA history is in, and there’s dozens of 3-6 time all stars in. mitchel is a really good player. idk why you acted like some bum dropped 70
It’s not on the mixtapes lol they’re positing what gets views. It’s on the coaches and parents to teach their kids the right way to play. If you’re good enough the highlights will come
The way my coach put it.
If you want a highlight reel, that's about how long your success will last.
What’s the jalen green shade bro is a top 2 pick on a bad team and is hopping average almost 22ppg you tripping
Jalen Green has been super inefficient. It takes away from averaging 21.7ppg.
@@bravesfan31 he’s on a bad team and is like 20 years old lol y’all want everyone to be luka in there 2nd year in the league the dude is a bucket
@@User-xv1fu this is the exact mindset that this video is talking about. Yeah the dude can score… that’s all he does tho
@@eliyarrows2456 bro he’s 20 years old lol not to mention he’s a shooting guard for a reason lol
This is pretty ironic because Austin Rivers came out of high school the same year as me. We were all watching Austin, John Wall, and DRose back then.
But they was top prospects. Not 3rd graders.
Love that Jalen Green callout haha
Why so many great European players?
Definitely a US issue
Bro you did not have to call out Jalen Green. Man made it to the league thats something 99% of these kids will never do in their lifetime.
he's in the NBA I don't think Jalen green is ruined 💀
Ironically enough, I feel like because of this we get the levels of talent we do nowadays but they just need better coaching to put them in the right direction and tbf Europe is honestly better at giving a more real basketball feel nowadays then American basketball with their team basketball, league not favoring offense for money, and players being okay with being yelled at
Bro Austin rivers is still living off his hs mixtape
“Not everyone can have their dad trade for you and give you a huge payday. The league has changed”- Austin Rivers
That Josh okogie snatch block into a dunk on the other end was probably the single best defensive play I’ve ever seen
You can say the same exact thing about And 1, after that Era. Alot of NBA players started thinking they were Hot Sauce and we got away from fundamentals, which even led the US getting embarrassed in 2004 Olympics. Old heads know this.
Jalen is a horrible example
Why? He sacrificies his teams winning for personal highlights every game. He has no presence on defense.
Austin had one of the goat mix tapes.
So true … And bottom line is like my varsity coach and AAU coach used to preach when a teammate would showboat “highlight play doesn’t win championships, intelligent & hustle play win championship’s. When two talented teams are evenly matched the men who do the things that don’t show up in a box score or in a highlight reel win the day.”
even though pickup games now, the basics have become even stronger with those who don't try for a highlight play every time
Jalen green was a highlight on the court.
Austin Rivers probably has one of the most watched high school highlights tapes ever lmao
Damn dawg Jalen Green catching strays 😂
Austin was a prime example of this
It’s easy to have that view on the matter when you grew up not worrying about money. Austin Rivers didn’t need a mixtape to get college tryouts or league tryouts.
something poetic about an 8 year old doing the too short motion for his celly
That's why I refuse to watch any of those mixtape channels. The number of those guys that are legitimately good is so small that it's not even worth it
Talent is short term success for nba players these days versus fundamentals bring longevity to success.
That’s just a ton of sports now. In the nfl, you stop the runner for a 2 yard gain, you’re doing a dance
NBA always choose flair, over effectivity a reason why the "grandma free throw" isn't used even if it's one of the most effective.
That same complaint was made when TNT broadcasted the Streetball documentary which then lead to And1. Coaching will & always has adjusted perception
I know the current generation of NBA players weren't held back by this but its interesting to see that arguably the 4 front runners in the MVP races are not American...The future of American ball doesn't look too good if these kids focus on the wrong things.
Damn..got Jalen out here catchin strays
They said the sneering about ESPN 25 years ago.
I remember watching a TikTok about a guy being annoyed his point guard gives him dimes on the cut instead of alleyoops
Austin rivers learned the hard way
Jalen Green caught a stray 😂
He is absolutely right, People got mad at me when I say players like Luka, will never be champions, and Stars like Durant and Curry should never be MVPs unless they make the All-Defensive team.
Everyone thinks all you have to do is score a bunch a points and thats enough, but tell me... Can you name one team thats won a championship without atleast one All-defensive player on the roster. NBA is full of 2K dreamers.
NETS: Had Harden, Kyrie, and Durant 0 ALL D until Simmons
You just stuck Kyrie on Dallas; ZERO All D players, how do you think their season will end?
Parents should use the mixtapes to show their kids how to dribble. The carying and traveling starts at such a young age. It then continues into Junior high, high School and college.
I can't tell you how many people I seen be so disrespectful and act like he's him only to get no offers or fizz out in college. Be humble and hungry guys.
Watched a video from mj's trainer throughout his career, he never worked on fancy highlight moves in practice, he just mastered the fundamentals and that comes naturally.
Make of that what you will
Same thing happened to pro wrestling, they just do finishing move after finishing move
That’s why I love bronny. He never plays for the highlight. Kid always makes the right play.
the Jalen green comment at the end is ridiculous
