Great video... loved the consistent focus on bringing yourself in proper range with footwork. I like the way you explained what the pivot actually is and what it means... that it's the result of hip rotation and not the cause. I still teach beginners to turn that foot because they're usually too inept and uncoordinated to understand turning their hip... but I was inspired by this video to make something on this.

Frazier and Tyson rotated their rear foot and Planted the front foot, rotating the front foot is an advanced counter hook, not meant for leprechauns or doo rag amateurs, try the Tyson hook, more power, more ko’s

Disagree your knee turns in to allow your hips to rotate more freely the less friction the more speed. speed times mass equals force. The best analogy i could use would be throwing a kick in tight pants it takes away the power(unless you're Joe Rogan) now over exaggerating is deff not good but power doesn't only come from the hips your torso probably plays just as big as a roll in any punch i would say the muscles used in the hook that are the ones that generate the power would be the inner thigh muscles glutes and core the arm it self is like a whip imo

Mr. Moore would come by a store I worked at in N. Braddock occasionally. He would take the time to share bits of the sweet science with me. Total respect to Mr. Moore.

Mention the foot i think is use to explain to newbies, but i believe the reason for the foot pivot is to add drive and not stress the knee ( when you rotate the hip ) if the foot is planted when hip goes it stresses mcl acl but it does add a little drive from the foot being properly aligned. But i agree the focus should be hips

@@tustudyis4life51 the point of the pivot is to allow your hip to keep turning, it increases your range of motion allowing more power. If you are just trying to get points or set up a different strike then its not really necessary. But if you are trying to actually do damage the foot pivot helps a ton. The pivot really doesnt need to be the focus like he said, but if you train the punch with correct form it really becomes automatic. Also, if you are doing footwork drills it really shouldnt put you off balance bc you should be sitting down into your strikes already.
So many people put the focus on the foot pivoting, focusing on the hip is a much more effective tip
the "foot pivot" is typically taught to get your hips into the punch. it develops terrible habits, still doesn't get the hips into the punch all the way and ruins all balance, footwork, combinations (try to land a hook combination on a double end bag repeatedly making full and clean contact) and defensive responsibility (you'll be off balance so you're an easy knockdown in the best case scenario and like setting up for a combo, defense is basically the same. even more so when you're slipping or rolling). many fighters finish with a hook to get back into their stance... not that i agree with this entirely as if you know someone is going to finish with a lazy/wild hook... a smart fighter will exploit it. but i digress. if your hook isn't returning you to your stance at all... you're likely doing something fundamentally wrong like pivoting that foot. aside from the right hand, i know very few reasons why your feet should leave the near 'L" shape heel to heel toe to toe alignment. the front or rear foot pivot will at the very least throw your stance off balance if not entirely cross your feet.
@@nb0616 also, I used to wonder when I first started why I could throw a cross hook so well, but not a hook cross, it’s because it’s so hard to turn over the cross (especially when moving forward) when your front foot is turned and you have to fight against the resistance caused by that. It’s much better to throw a hook cross if the front foot doesn’t turn sideways like a freakin blade. The same goes for a basic one+two while moving forward

so basically 4 things:
1. don't load up
2. throw the left hook from your hip
3. while initiating your pivoting, focus on your hip movement, not on bringing your heel up (it will follow your hip anyways)
4. use your footwork to get into the right position to throw the left hook (don't reach)
Marvin is such a detailed instructor. He breaks things down to the specific position and body fundamentals. Love the fact that I first watch one of his videos around 10 or 12 years ago.

I'm an amateur at best, but I was caught up in the foot rotation thing for sure and didn't realize it. Once I deployed this tactic I immediately was able to deliver more power to the bag. Awesome video, wish I would have found it sooner. Great job Marvin!!!
This is honestly amazing... took private boxing lessons for almost a year with 3 different trainers. No one ever taught me any of this about the hook. Just a lot of yelling to hit the bag/mitts harder. Unreal. Thank you good sir.

Great video! I think one of best visual sayings that I’ve heard referring to teaching not to “reach” while throwing the hook is that the hook “comes back to you.” I’ve seen a lot of street videos where wild hooks are thrown while also reaching out for the opponent who are too far away. This turns into your classic “haymaker.” I like the saying because it visualizes for me that path of the hook starting with hip generation and coming back towards my center rather than reaching out for the opponent out of range. I love your videos Marvin!

Man I absolutely LOVE your videos. A perfect example of footwork getting you into the perfect position is early Tyson days. He did a lot of slipping but his footwork is what got him out of danger and in position to land a clean powerful punch.

Wow, new videos! Mr. Cook, I have to tell you, when I trained kickboxing regularly, your True Boxing Stance videos helped a ton! I was rewatching them almost every day before practice to make sure I've understand them well and to make it second nature. Balance and footwork is everything.
This video helped me improve my body mechanics for my right cross as well. Best boxing teacher on youtube in my opinion, you really helping me get to the next level as I prepare to jump into amateur fights soon.

totally agree with the pivot thing. Used for showing beginners what your body actually does when throwing, but eliminate it when starting to become novice to take away extra unneeded movement and imbalances. Great video!

When he slightly went to the left and how his hips were positioned put the opponent directly into his centerline. Positioning your centerline is something most people dont speak about often. Another worthwhile video

Everything you teach resonates so well I know exactly what you mean when you say don't focus on your feet when you are repositioning because that was my biggest problem not to mention not even thinking about focusing on the hips and having my feet naturally balance out do to weight distribution from THE HIPS. The hip rotation is good advice, even for kickboxers. Lots of guys focus on the foot pivot and it leaves their leg very open for leg kicks. Liam harrison made a video on this as well.

Love what you said about not focusing on the foot too much because you risk losing balance... I have definitely found it to be true, so glad to hear someone confirm it for me! I was told to "squish the bug" with my foot and I found myself focusing so hard on twisting my foot that I wasn't getting the power I wanted... once I stopped worrying about the foot so much I started to intutitvely generate that power from the hip turn and the foot wasn't even on my mind... Thank you Marvin!
I was doing it too but practicing on my own. I noticed after watching this video that the pros aren't turning their foot on the left hook, I was taught to turn my foot on rear hand punches though so I'll keep my eyes open for that too.

I subscribed years ago and he didn't have many subscribers then. Came back to find he quite rightfully now has the recognition he deserves.
As he says.... keep the weight off the front foot so it can move to generate the torque from the hips. With the punch being short and crisp.
First time I have ever seen it taught correctly.
Rear hook is a lot more difficult, as that is a wide, difficult punch. Same rule applies though....keep the weight off the back foot, torque through the hips and keep it as neat as possible.
Balanced all the way through. Especially useful if you miss!
