    Elaine, a beautiful young witch, is determined to find a man to love her. In her Gothic Victorian apartment she makes spells and potions, and then picks up men and seduces them. However, her spells work too well, leaving her with a string of hapless victims. When she finally meets the man of her dreams, her desperation to be loved will drive her to the brink of insanity and murder. With a visual style that pays tribute to Technicolor thrillers of the '60s, THE LOVE WITCH explores female fantasy and the repercussions of pathological narcissism.

    Why are people saying there is no substance to the movie? I thought it was pretty damn obvious (as did many critics) that there was discussion and dissection of gender norms and sex in society which was really unique and interesting. Like they almost hit you in the face with it at points it's kinda hard to miss.

    no comment on the gender dynamics of the movie?
    not what i would have expected to see on this channel, almost thought they would hate it because the movie is so... reasonable with its ideas

      FloatingBacon seriously how are so many people here missing the gender conversation? plenty of critics and audience members caught on. idk it feels very wrong to just strip this down to an exercise in style and nothing else...

      Kevin Bennett That would be a great triple feature! All three are such aesthetically and thematically different and yet all are rich in mood, unique production and costume design and in atmosphere. 2016 was a great year for movies about witchy women!

    i just watched the movie yesterday, and it was an interesting one. it's annoying at times, but only due to the ferocious dedication to the style it emulates so well. it's also very smart and insightful at times, and generally i'd say it's a very well done film, although many people wouldn't enjoy its particular flavor, but even they would probably find some great moments in it, because it explores very timeless topics.

    I was actually going to ask after what turned out to be Matt's perspective; if something is an homage does it make it better to nail the flaws of those films or styles as well? Is an homage film only great if it also absorbs the flaws with the style or does it have to still manage a great plot and direction as we determine but with the style and elements of the genre or period its recreating?

      Absolutely, it looks classy like what those guys' movies should look if they still had total control (which I sometimes wonder) instead of going teal orange on us. I'm dead tired of that current look that everybody has now (studio imposed to a large degree, I'm sure).

    I own this movie & actually have mixed feelings about it. At first I was drawn to it obviously because I love the set design, costume design, the fact that its based around a witch, potions, tarot, etc. however I don't like the fact that it makes her look like a crazed, obsessed woman desperate for love. I don't like that her spells are caste in a dark light, that she manipulates then kills these men & that she makes comments about all that a man wants is a pretty woman to love him. I'm not sure if that was the point the filmmaker was trying to make about gender roles and stereotypes but there was things I agreed and disagreed about it. Overall interesting movie. Love the 60s vibe.

    I strongly disliked this film, but admired its stylish devotion to 1960s-70s Technicolor Euro-erotica-horror. The story is convoluted and contradictory-two things good satire should never be. It amazes me that it has a 95% on RT, while better satirical horror films that also explore the primal relationship between men and women (such as Takashi Miike’s stellar “Audition” from 1999) are nowhere close to that on RT.

    Gimmicks are just that; they should add to something, not be the entirety of it. Think of a restaurant with waitresses in skimpy clothes or offers free movies with your food. Chances are, their food isn't as good as the place down the street which only has food to offer. If I'm going to watch a film for two hours, it better have something else to offer besides the style in which it was shot.
    This type of film is why so many English majors say their required film class was the worst part of the major curriculum. Total style over substance.

    • @cjwright79
      @cjwright79 Před 7 lety +1

      Well said Cassandra. Our time and patience is far too valuable to spend two hours and $10 on a novel exercise in style. An intriguing plot and vivid characterization and a smart script, that's where it's at.

    • @Charlotte_Martel
      @Charlotte_Martel Před 7 lety +1

      Chris Wright Agreed Chris. I just wish that more studio heads thought like you and would green light some thought provoking, decent scripts. I haven't seen a truly great film since "The Green Room."

    • @cjwright79
      @cjwright79 Před 7 lety

      Cassandra'sCurse
      That was one heck of violent, dystopic, grim film, but yeah, certainly the concept was fresh and original. In retrospect that whole scene where Anton Yelchin got his arm halfway hacked off now seems like a portent of what followed, the grevious bodily injury involving his SUV.
      Anywho I will recommend a couple of films I saw this fall, Deepwater Horizon and Arrival, for really delivering the goods. Both a little on the scary side though, but the fear is earned and appropriate given the material.
      As for studio heads, from what I can tell, despite any high-minded ambitions, they are really just focused on bring in trillions of dollars in revenue. They don't really understand or care to understand what makes a great movie with lasting appeal, so long as their job is secure and the company coffers are enriched.
      Although, in their defense I have noticed that some studios will fund big dumb superhero blockbusters and the like, so that they can turn that cash flow around and put it into more thoughtful, less mass marketable movies that have more artistic and/or philosophical and/or historical and/or societal importance. And those sorts of high quality movies do to tend to pay dividends, just over a long time period as enough people discover their finer qualities. For a big boost to cash flow though, they're looking for the obvious hits like Captain America or the upcoming Avatar sequels.

    • @Charlotte_Martel
      @Charlotte_Martel Před 7 lety

      Chris Wright Yeah, I have to admit that I like the gritty, realistic films. That film kept me in suspense the entire time, and I never had to suspend disbelief. I already have to do that every week when I turn on "The Walking Dead" (entertaining show, but the logical leaps it's made in the past few seasons can be eye-rolling at times). Poor Anton's fate hit me a week or so ago when I watched the latest Star Trek film. Very sad and he will be missed.
      I plan to see "Arrival" in the next few weeks, so it's great to hear a positive review. I think the concept sounds quite interesting (I love sci-fi) and hope it lives up to the potential. Mostly, I hope it's not another "Contact" or "Interstellar." Both of those were beautifully shot but became extremely lazy during the final quarter.
      Sadly, as you have said, the studio executives often have to prioritize profit over quality story telling. Super hero films do extremely well and translate easily to IMAX (where the major profits for cinemas are), so we can expect more of the same in the future until the public becomes bored and keeps their money in their pockets. Don't get me wrong; I love a good superhero film. But the last "Avengers" was pathetic both in script and, oddly enough, in special effects. There was so much CGI I felt like I was watching my kid play a video game. It felt slapped together just to pull in some cash.
