For anyone curious… he’s still in a medically induced coma, they’ve lowered his oxygen from 100% to 50% and they’ve apparently flipped him to his stomach to try and give his lungs some relief. This is all according to his uncle who gave an interview outside the hospital recently. Edit: apparently he’s neurologically intact, has opened his eyes, and is gripping hands of his loved ones. Idk how much help he’s still receiving or how aware he really is but this is obviously good news. Edit 2: this morning they took the breathing tube out and he FaceTimed teammates.
That's... not great. They've only been able to lower his oxygen requirements because they proned him onto his stomach. Breathing on his own would mean that he was in a spontaneous breathing mode. If he's on 0.50, still in a coma, and proned, he's on a fully ventilated mode which means the ventilator is doing the work for his lungs. He's on a rate which means he has to breathe at that rate as the ventilator forces the positive pressure needed to achieve a target volume without causing pressure trauma to his lungs. He's not getting that breathing tube out for at least several days. So that will be touch and go. I wish him well though.
Ugh...my experience has shown that when cpr has been performed out of hospital in cases like this the chances of full recovery is so low. Survival and recovery are very different. That kid and his family are in for a long rough ride. I really hope for the best for him.
@@miniciominiciominicio he received minor lung damage idk if it was from them performing CPR and breaking his rib’s or being incubated. But they’re keeping him sedated so his heart can heal while they figure out what happened. It’s definitely still touch and go as your survival rate decreases by 10% every minute. It took them 9 minutes on the field to get a pulse then they lost him again in the ambulance. I’m live in Cincinnati and was in attendance the good news is he’s in one of the best trauma response centers in the State’s. I pray 🙏🏻 he continues to make a upward trend to recovering ❤️🩹

He got hit in the chest at just the right time to make his heart stop. The good news they said is that since he’s young, otherwise healthy, and had CPR immediately, he can make a full recovery.

Genuinely surprised at the amount of backlash he got. I really don't care for the guy but it's actually insane the amount of people that misunderstood the tweet. You can't hear someone's tone through text but I took what he wrote the way he intended and it's actually crazy the amount of people that took it the wrong way and ran with their own interpretation of what he said and based on that interpretation decided to s*** on him. Crazy world we live in.
Not just that, if any of these wonderful people took two seconds to read his prior tweets it'd be obvious he cares about Damar pulling through and was pretty shook up seeing this happen. Honestly anyone bagging on Skip for this is just a bad person or borderline illiterate.
I think part of it was because of Skip's reputation for his lack of caring for other human beings. I remember a while ago Dak Prescott opened up about his depression following his brother's suicide, and Skip called him a weak person and a bad leader for doing so.
Yeah this honestly was so dumb. It's pretty obvious that he was just trying to look smart by having wack wording. I understood what he meant the first time I read it. The only difference in interpretation is if you read it in positive or negative tone.
Even from a technical point of view the game was already over. You can't have focused players after knowing that someone that was on the field could be in an actual life threatening condition, it's just illogical to continue a game after such event. Prayers for Damar and his family, let's hope he makes a full recovery after this.
The problem with your logic... he was off the field in medical professional hands. Stopping the game isn't going to make him heal. Continuing the game isn't going to kill him. Other people have been injured (Though lesser) and the game continues with them being out. He likely would be out of the game for the rest of this year to be safe. Delaying the game does nothing but inconvenience everyone. It also means people will direct their anger at him as he becomes the cause. It also gives people legitimate arguments for unfair treatment. It may have been the worst call to stop the game since any decision doesn't change anything for the injured player.
@@Buglin_Burger7878 so if you watch your family member get cpr and drive off in the ambulance do you wanna keep doing your daily routine or wanna go to your safe place and worry about heir health?
@@Buglin_Burger7878 Yes, but at the same time, people will have a legitimate arguement for either team losing. I doubt many of the players on either team would have been able to continue playing on without being distracted or shaken by what just happened. It's not the same as seeing a teammate taken off the field cause of a torn ACL or other common injuries on the field
I interpreted that tweet differently. When he said "a game of this magnitude is crucial to the regular-season outcome ... *which suddenly seems so irrelevant* " To me it came across as him saying that the game/season didn't seem important anymore considering a young man is fighting for his life. I understand where the backlash stems from though, don't get me wrong.
I really hope he makes a full recovery. And, as bad as this might sound, I hope the guy that tackled him is okay too. Imagine the guilt he must be feeling about this...crushing. I just hope this whole situation ends in a positive way for everyone
that doesn't sound bad at all! i sincerely doubt that he tackled him with any intent to cause serious harm, and it's definitely a horrible situation. i completely agree, I hope all things end positively.
Hamlin was the Bills player who made the tackle on a Bengals player named Tee Higgins. I’m sure Higgins is inevitably feeling bad about it even though he got tackled, but it’s really nobody’s fault this happened. They were both just playing the game they love.

I was in a loud bar right at Buffalo last night with tons of Bills fans, following the hit the bar got completely quite. People would only yelled out of frustration for the game to be postponed, the narrators at some point insinuated that the players were asked to warm up to continue the game in 10 minutes after Hamlin was taken out of the field. The whole thing was traumatic, so happy it was postponed. Hoping for Hamlin soon recovery
@@doc.squatch ok but there are traumatic injuries every season in every sport and on most teams... it's just that folks who do not keep up with football in any way whatsoever happened to hear about this one injury and decided that they need to use it as a way to get more social points. Even Charlie's take on the second tweet is odd to me. I read it as "Sorry I made a tweet that was easy to misunderstand". Essentially saying, "I worded that poorly, my bad" as Charlie suggested.
Jesus, I can’t stand the outrage over this tweet. I get Skip seems braindead a lot, but people being outraged at this just shows how much people WANT to hate Skip. Plus in a situation like this WANT to be mad at somebody. All he did, was ask how the nfl could suspend a huge game like this (which has never happened before), and acknowledged they should be considering postponing the game, while acknowledging how irrelevant the game felt. Skip Bayless was always like this. Remember when Gordon Hayward broke his leg in half and right after Skip went on Twitter to complain about how LeBron's road to the finals got way easier?
It reminds me of the Denmark vs. Finland game at the 2020 (2021) Euros when Christian Eriksen had a cardiac arrest and his teammates had to do CPR and form a wall around him as paramedics did their thing. Having absolutely no knowledge of skip, I read the tweet for the first time when you put it on screen here in the video and I read it as though he were concerned for Hamlin's health. To me it reads mostly as just the musings of someone who should keep most of their thoughts private unless the context for them is thoroughly understood. In the sense that he mentioned something that almost no one else cared about in that moment because it's kind of his job to think about those things. I didn't read it as though he were disappointed that the game was now less relevant, but that he was just saying it's less relevant to most people, but it's the kind of thing his mind goes to. Some people are just wired that way, when my grandfather passed away my mother had a complete breakdown (understandably that was her dad) meanwhile I just needed to go do ANYTHING else for a couple hours. Everyone processes things differently.
The funny thing is, Skip is right. I’ve seen worse injuries and even deaths on the NFL field, but the games still went on. This new culture is SENSITIVE AF. I wish we can go back to the 90’s
@@massdagod Agreed. Injuries are a part of professional sports. I don’t understand why it’s either a) you’re concerned for his health or b) you’re curious about the NFL’s approach to the rest of the games. Twitter is terrible for taking sides and making things a binary choice. It’s fine to be curious about how the NFL are going to respond to this, it’s not callous to think that.
It's also Skip's job to make a properly worded statement instead of rushing to make his tweet. Can't really excuse his shoddy and sloppy practices as a journalist when it's their job to get their point across with as less ambiguity as possible.
My friend posted this and had a similar opinion until I pointed something out that everyone seems to have missed. He made 4 tweets about this event and I'm gonna post them all together, in the order he made them. "Not exactly sure what happened to Damar Hamlin. Players on both teams are shaken. Ambulance out on the field. CPR administered. Can't remember play being stopped for this length of time. Just said a prayer for him and his family. I've seen so many horrific injuries suffered on football fields yet never have I seen a reaction like this. In every other situation I witnessed or covered, the game always went on fairly quickly. The attitude was, "Hey, that's football." For these players, this was DIFFERENT. No doubt the NFL is considering postponing the rest of this game - but how? This late in the season, a game of this magnitude is crucial to the regular-season outcome...which suddenly seems so irrelevant. Nothing is more important than that young man's health. That was the point of my last tweet. I'm sorry if that was misunderstood but his health is all that matters. Again, everything else is irrelevant. I prayed for him & will continue to." Now everyone seems to only pay attention to the 3rd and 4th tweet but nobody even acknowledged the fact that long before he made even either of those 2 tweets he made the first and second. When I read all 4 of those tweets together, I really don't see why everyone jumped on the hate train. Maybe just because of who he is, I don't keep up much with sports and I've never heard of Skip Bayless prior to yesterday, but when I look at all 4 of those tweets in order, I really don't see the hate as warranted. Honestly even just the third tweet out of context really didn't strike me as bad. I took it as he was pondering the thought of what's more important, a game that's crucial to the season outcome, or the young man's life which he ultimately decided that the "game crucial to the season outcome seems irrelevant." Which is quite literally what he said in the tweet. Again, I'm not familiar with him as a person but I really don't see why everyone jumped on the hate train.
I don't watch any sports but half of sports fans care more about the sport than the players do, so it's not surprising someone is curious about the future of the season or whatever. And it's like a conversation that would need to happen. Comes down to the same thing as most concerns people are willing to call out.. which is the inability to realize many things can be important at the same time. People can care about more than one thing at the same time. More than one thing can be true at the same time. More than one thought can be occurring in someone's mind

I didn't see a problem with what Skip said at first because I just happened to read it the way he intended. It came off as him laying out the foundation to show how big the scale was for the upcoming NFL playoff season so he could better show just how much more important Hamlin's situation was. Then I saw the massive backlash he immediately received and while I still understood what he technically meant, I could see why it was taken so negatively. I think the takeaway here was that Skip should have just not even brought up being curious about how the rest of the season was going to get handled and left it at wishing him the best. Especially since the tragedy was still fresh and emotions were extremely high.
Yeah I hate Skip Bayless with a passion but I didn’t see an issue with the tweet, it was just horribly worded. Damar likely suffered a rare event called comido cordis. It can happen to anyone but typically in young athletes. After the heart discharges electrical activity it takes a short period of time to recharge. That tweet was never going to go down well, it's definitely one that should have stayed in the drafts. Even in the kindest light, the timing alone is terrible.
I don’t think the intention was as harsh as people took it, but it was unnecessary and it’s pretty easy to see how it could be interpreted in that way. There’s no reason he had to send that. Could’ve just kept it at a standard sharing of thoughts and wellwishes
I’m no fan of Skip Bayless but this is the first time I’ve watched one of Charlie’s videos and come away thinking “what a truly terrible series of fundamentally bad takes with little or no basis”. Most unusual.
I think Twitter took Bayless's tweet in the most uncharitable way possible, I didn't read it the way so many people seemed to have. But Charlie, my brother in christ, you never showed us the ratio. I had to know if the ratio was bigger than Tate and Thunbergs. Now I'll never know.
I think the ratio he was referring to was the comment to retweet/quote tweet to likes, where the comments were more than 3 times the likes and the quote/retweets were more than two times the size of the likes. Also I don’t think anything would top _that_ ratio ever.
while being badly worded, i still think it’s pretty obvious that skip was talking about the health of damar taking priority over the game. i think this is a classic case of people trying to twist a tweet into something it was never meant to be and going apeshit.
My neighbor said the same thing at a get together. Nobody was upset, just a conversation. Social media and pundits making things that they aren't.... Smfh
I don't understand how people misread his tweet, it seemed pretty obvious to me that he was saying the game became irrelevant because of the injury, it's not his fault people misinterpreted his words and jumped to conclusions about his meaning so why should he have to apologize?
because everyone on twitter believes themselves to be English scholars but they're all just pretentious losers who can only get a W in their lives by attacking people online.
“It feels like hes saying” “some people were saying what skip was saying was” lol do you hear yourself?? The guy tweeted something out and it “feels” like he said something to hurt your feelings😢
I remember in the summer when the Danish football(soccer) player Christian Eriksen also collapsed on the pitch. That was terrifying but the game was only postponed by about an hour or slightly more if I remember correctly. He's back up and playing now, so I hope that's the same for this guy now (sorry if I can't remember his name right) Damar Hamlin. Cardiac arrest on a sports field is terrifying. Fuck that, cardiac arrest as a whole is terrifying
Its worth noting that the NFL didn't even make the decision to postpone the game. Player reps on both teams contacted the NFLPA, which then contacted the League office and told them the game was not going to continue. The NFL was more than willing to keep the game going, but the union told them no. Another instance of the NFL not giving a shit about the players.

It's his job to say things like this as a commentator. If we all stopped everything we were doing to give thoughts and prayers for every tragedy nothing would ever get done because someone is always dying/being hurt.
Honestly Twitter drama continues to be ridiculous, there’s so much that can be lost in translation in text and this does seem like a misunderstanding that people are reacting to bc of the severity of the situation. Idk I just feel like all our lives would be better if we adduced the best of each other
That would require them admitting they are wrong, instead of coping with "he worded it wrong, therefore I'm allowed to hate this guy, also ratio", People like Charlie are way too proud and hateful to not get defensive over their own mistake, always somehow blaming it on the other one instead.
@@Fred-tz7hs Let's be fair here, the wording left way too much room for negative interpretation, (particularly the 2nd line of the tweet) otherwise this wouldn't have blown up. Personally, I think it's not about "fault", it's about knee-jerk Twitter users taking *responsibility* for jumping on that interpretation. And Skip needs to take *responsibility* for either not knowing/caring that his wording would be interpreted that way if he or ESPN don't want it to happen again. Onus is on both speaker and listener to think before acting/reacting. Just a funny thing to note: Skip's career is built on his ability to communicate, so the fact that this situation was caused by miscommunication is quite ironic.
As someone who does not follow sports whatsoever, this was the one question I had after this. Best wishes to the player, and thanks for the update!
That's...
I’m curious as to when tf they’re going to reschedule. I also hope he recovers and is able to come back to the NFL.

Reading comprehension is difficult to come by these days
I think part of it was because of Skip's reputation for his lack of caring for other human beings. I remember a while ago Dak Prescott opened up about his depression following his brother's suicide, and Skip called him a weak person and a bad leader for doing so.
Yeah this honestly was so dumb. It's pretty obvious that he was just trying to look smart by having wack wording. I understood what he meant the first time I read it.
The only difference in interpretation is if you read it in positive or negative tone.
“Which suddenly becomes so irrelevant” can be taken as sarcastic. It’s just a misunderstanding
Even from a technical point of view the game was already over. You can't have focused players after knowing that someone that was on the field could be in an actual life threatening condition, it's just illogical to continue a game after such event.
Prayers for Damar and his family, let's hope he makes a full recovery after this.
According to someone in the comments, "that's not how the real world works, must be nice being an entertainer" in reference to the game stopping.

@@massdagod you say that like it’s a good thing
@@massdagod Agreed. Injuries are a part of professional sports. I don’t understand why it’s either a) you’re concerned for his health or b) you’re curious about the NFL’s approach to the rest of the games. Twitter is terrible for taking sides and making things a binary choice. It’s fine to be curious about how the NFL are going to respond to this, it’s not callous to think that.
Really well explained, this is my sentiment
It's also Skip's job to make a properly worded statement instead of rushing to make his tweet. Can't really excuse his shoddy and sloppy practices as a journalist when it's their job to get their point across with as less ambiguity as possible.
Its a real question people want answers to. They'll have to play twice this coming week
I prayed for him & will continue to."
Now everyone seems to only pay attention to the 3rd and 4th tweet but nobody even acknowledged the fact that long before he made even either of those 2 tweets he made the first and second.
Gonna be honest.. the tweet isn't even mildly an issue to anyone who doesn't function like a typical twitter user does
I don't watch any sports but half of sports fans care more about the sport than the players do, so it's not surprising someone is curious about the future of the season or whatever.

But ppl will always freak out and get their pitch forks out. 🤷🏻♂️
Like you said he should’ve just completely avoided trying to discuss the effects of postponing especially since he himself said it was irrelevant due to the injury. And if you get hit in the chest during a very specific time (called the relative refractory period) during the recharge, it can stop your heart completely or cause it to go into lethal arrhythmia.
