This is legit JOJO MAYER technique: You might be embarrassed to hear that everything the guy at 9:22 explains is legit Jojo Mayer stuff. He's setting up his kit in a way to hit the drums at a most flat angle to get best rebound and sound. (Even though Jojo tilts his snare more away from himself.) The rim click that hits also the rim of the high tom is a technique Jojo explains in a video about getting a 'clap' sound from an acoustical drum set. It's just not very well performed in the shown video. I'd love to see some upvotes on this comment so that the techniques explained at this point don't get the bad credit that they don't deserve.
Timo Heinrich thumbs up from me. I stumbled on to it when I started putting all the toms on stands for more flexibility. With them flat it was hard not to hit two rims, wrong rims, knees, etc. So I adjusted it a bit to make it consistent and use it and the rims a lot more as triggers. You can sneak in another cool sound by hitting a rack tom with the tip of a stick with your hand right above the floor tom. Focus the butt of the stick down onto the floor tom as is bounces and it makes a nice one handed flam-tap. It's kind of like holding two marimba mallets letting one hit earlier (or single stroke roll), but the front and back of the stick are the mallets.
Also the sound of the tom will be much more spread out and round when the tom is angled that way. This way the tip of the stick will hit the head more flat and use all of it's potential, giving you that round sound that lights up the whole shell. If you were to hit the tom with only the top of the tip, the sound would be more "pingy" and tense. The way this guy also describes how his toms are angled more towards him not only makes the sound of the drum more weak, but potentially hurts himself. Having the toms angled towards you can make your wrists locked in a really uncomfortable way, potentially hurting you. Also this kills a batter head faster than anything else. This video was pretty fun but this part was just stupid and uneducational by EMC.
@@wiisportss Of course the improvement in sound will especially given if you use a stick that fallows the same philosophy. The tip of the stick needs to be shaped in a way that gives you a lot of contact surface on a flat angel. Some sticks will not give you that.
I’m a 73 year old buzzard I played drums for about 30 years from night clubs as a young man and general business (weddings, class reunions, bowling banquets, Bar Mitzvahs etc.) as I got older. Can’t read music. I got by just fine. Nearly 20 years with the same 4 guys a very popular group. Self taught never got through book one. Always made more than scale and I may hold the record for eating more free stuffed chicken meals in a lifetime. I love your channel I’m just about bedridden live alone and listen to audio books, podcasts and watch CZcams videos for hours everyday. Especially this last year with COVID. You’re a remarkable percussionist and you really make me laugh. You work so hard on your videos it’s astonishing. I look forward to your videos you should have a million subscribers. And have a good morning.
I'm not a drummer but the videos other than the punk beat one hurt. I'm not even a true percussionist and I can't even find the beat to most of these, also after I heard the first triplet I wanted to click off lol
That second guy truly is an expert. He puts a creative spin on one of the most common and easy to play 4/4 rhythms by taking out one 32nd note in between the snare and bass drum when they're supposed to be a 16th note apart. Truly genious and unexpected, I can't wait to hear it in a song
greg gall (triplet guy) is actually a really great metal drummer, he just didnt know any of the correct terminologies cos he's probably self taught. maybe he shouldn't be teaching, but he's pretty damn good at what he does which is performing.
People do play that double rim click thing. The goal is to get a flam sound with it. I think it sounds bad, but people do it. I believe rdavidr has done this a bunch
I legit just learned that the reason my doubles go from awesome to straight dogshit is because when I transition from mid-tempo to high-tempo, I'm still trying to catch the rebound with my fingers. For twenty years. Which is apparently impossible. Damnit.
I know nothing about drums (well i am starting to get some drum names and other ideas just watching), but i find your videos so fun! I was lol in the RL, along with you. My favourite reaction of yours: "Please don't". I am so glad there is a job out there for me at a place like ExpertVillage, where i could play drums for my very first time like/as an expert! Keep it up Eric, that was fun. I marvel at your standing, high velocity, non stiff drumming,. nj
The entire time I was imagining Eric explaining to the caption head or director of percussion about how he broke the shells of the $2000 dollar quads while doing a quint crossstick
I subscribed because you have a poster of The Brave Little Toaster in the background. “The Master never played triplets with Expert Village.” “Coz they’re stuck in a wall!”
10:14 Yes, it‘s a thing. So kind of. You could play the tom rim as a flam before the rim click so you get an electronic clap-like sound! But yeah, how he explained it was... Weird..
2 years late to the party, but yea, just saying "rim flam" is a better way to explain it than that guy. You also don't need your toms flat to play one, my setup is more conventional and I can do it. I suppose a flat tom would make it easier, but a rim flam certainly isn't reason alone to switch.
I just recently found your channel and I’m really glad I did. Great quality content. I’m trying out for Music City and Cavi’s soon so until then I’m gonna keep that notification bell rang and enjoy your videos!
As a self taught intermediate metal drummer of 11 years I found those expertvillage videos highly offensive. Idk why people think they know everything in drumline. Drumline isn't just wacking drums and hitting the drums loud. There is a lot of technique and form when it comes to drumline, different drum shapes, totally different tunings for drums, and larger sticks. And of course never be stiff. I have been a section leader for 2 years for my high school drumline and even though I don't know everything about drumming, I know enough to teach my fellow students correctly.
I can't believe I am just finding this video. My brain hurt watching those "lessons". "Expert" village? Face:palm. Take out the "lessons" and this video is epic. Semper Fidelis brother.
10:13 Definitely a thing. Check out Brazilian drummers like Edison Machado and Milton Banana. Also really popular with hip hop drummers. You have the option of a flam sound elsewhere on the kit. Why not on the rims?
Just when I decide to explore drumming topics on my left or right of field, like your drum line themes, you put the zoom lens on the wacky extremities!
The double rimshot is something Chris Dave does to get a handclap style sound by “flamming” between the two rims. Ive seen maybe 3-4 other professional drummers utilize that concept. Definitely gonna have to try that reverse drumset traditional grip. 😂
Eric, you have obviously never heard of the quadruple cross stick. I'm offended.

Wow, strange seeing you here dave
I was about to mention you haha
Barry B Benson I didn’t expect to see you here either
