Gaming History: Warcraft "Humans, Orcs and a story retconed to hell and back"

- Warcraft Orcs and Humans - In the wake of Dune 2, Blizzard made the fantasy RTS upon which they've built one of the most profitable franchises in history. As for the game itself… well, they made Warcraft 2 after this, which was fantastic!
(Game Description) Warcraft: Orcs & Humans is a real-time strategy game (RTS), developed by Blizzard Entertainment and published by Blizzard and Interplay Entertainment. The MS-DOS version was released on 23 November 1994 and the Macintosh version in early 1996. Sales were fairly high, reviewers were mostly impressed, and the game won three awards and was a finalist for three others. There was a CD re-release, namely version 1.21 (CD version), that didn't have the word-from-the-user-manual copy protection of prior versions. The sequel, Warcraft II: Tides of Darkness, became the main rival to Westwood Studios' Command & Conquer series, and this competition fostered an RTS boom in the mid to late 1990s.
Although Warcraft: Orcs & Humans was not the first RTS title to offer multiplayer games, Blizzard's game persuaded a wider audience that multiplayer facilities were essential for future RTS titles. The game introduced innovations in mission design and gameplay elements, which were adopted by other RTS developers.
Blizzard's main emphases in these games were on skillful management of relatively small forces and on development of characterization and storyline within and between games played in the same universe.

I don't like the what's been done to Warcraft story; heck, we can't even talk about Warcraft anymore - it's just WoW now. I used to play WoW, starting with vanilla back in the day, and I did like it back then - they were still keeping it close to the spirit of original Warcraft games - but as the expansion packs started rolling it became more and more like your typical MMO fest that wasn't even Warcraft anymore.
This pretty much.
Though there were *warning signs* with Vanilla WoW as well, it was still a good experience that I spent soo many hours with, just living in the world... Of WarCraft - ahum -
Looking back at the early Alpha and Beta videos and the game looks so significantly more different and yet, still so inline with WarCraft as it was.
Nowadays however.. Everyhting is WoW.
StarCraft 2? Overbalanced and WoWified.
Diablo 3? Piece of shit and WoWified ( _personally it never got better than Diablo 1 w/Hellfire but, that's me_ ).
It's sad really.
Now people are talking about Sylvanas and How sexy night/blood elves are and how illidan is totes badass anti hero.

If youre reading this; there is a Vanilla Private Server called Turtle WoW, it keeps true to the old lore while adding their own content.
They have High Elves and Goblins as playable Races, loads of Custom Quests, many restored Beta Features, and are working currently on unused Land, such as a vanilla Style Outland.

Lots of stuff had to be read from manual, there was some thick manuals coming out in these times. While Diablo 1 wasn't very complicated in plot, it had a very deep satanic, occultic atmosphere. Lots of flavour text and game storyline could be read from manual with great artworks to help it out. Later times changed and you are supposed to get a digital version or get a box with 3 pages instruction how to install and some codes to Uplay or other crap. Spare me.
My favourite warcraft storyline is in Warcraft Adventures. Crazy stuff happened, but is was fun seeing it.
Manuals. Did you read the manuals originally released for the games? Get your mind blown how details they worked out way before they implemented them in the games. Just saying. Yeah, those things didn't came through the narrative of the game, but...ohh well, whatever.
as far as I'm concerned the canon is 2, 2x, 3, 3x, TTRPG, WoW Vanilla.
The first game, while essential, didn't really have a story.
And Burning Crusade and further shot WarCraft 3s story to death. Don't even get me started on cataclysm.

Say all you want but Warcraft 1 was better than Warcraft 2 in my eyes... I liked the units and spells and missions in Warcraft 1 much more.
