Taksim Square, located in the Beyoğlu district of Istanbul, is one of the most famous spots in the city and serves as one of its major tourist attractions, surrounded by restaurants, shops, hotels, entertainment venues, and cultural sites. Throughout its history, Taksim Square has been a focal point for various political and social events.
The Taksim Pedestrianization Project, initiated by the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality in February 2020, partially completed in 2013, aimed to partly redirect the traffic underground, enhancing the pedestrian experience.
    Etymology:
During the Ottoman era, a water reservoir was constructed in the area now known as Taksim Square to distribute water to neighboring districts. A small structure called the Taksim Maksemi was built to distribute the stored water. The name of the square derives from the "distribution" (taksim) of the Galata-Beyoğlu water at the Taksim Maksemi.
    History:
Taksim Square emerged as a prominent public space during the Republic period. Initially, it served as a vital intersection for the Grande Rue de Péra (now İstiklal Avenue) and was marked by the construction of a water distribution building, reflecting the city's struggle with water scarcity. Sultan Mahmud I addressed this issue by establishing water distribution from the Belgrad Forest to the area via an aqueduct system in the 18th century. The square gained its name from the distribution point (Maksem) where water was apportioned to various directions.
Over time, Taksim Square witnessed the development of significant architectural landmarks, including the Taksim Artillery Barracks and later the Mecidiye Barracks, which now houses Istanbul Technical University's Taşkışla Building. Additionally, Gümüşsuyu Military Hospital and the Gümüşsuyu Barracks were constructed during the reign of Sultan Abdülmecid I. These structures, along with the Talimhane area for military drills, contributed to Taksim's military and governmental character.
Today, Taksim Square stands as a symbol of Istanbul's vibrant history and continues to evolve as a focal point for social gatherings, cultural events, and political demonstration.
