Hi, Diana! Did you know that we stll have a Canadian Air Base (with 133 soldiers in Geilenkirchen/Northrhine-Westphalia) in Germany? Most of the Canadian military bases in Germany were closed between the 50s and the 70s. Here is something about their history. Up to now I only knew about US, British and French troops during the cold war (1946-1989), fairly interesting:

Same here. I’m mad of families being displaced from the war and wanting to get back to the homeland. Honestly, am fluent now after a few years of intense daily study, though speaking always takes a bit more thought and energy than listening. Especially, I’m assuming, when you’re there and actually doing it. Can’t wait to try and get there after everything is open again, and potentially start a new permanent life. The language, landscape and the weather, which is a bit milder coming from Michigan, being my biggest draws to there.

If you are a foreigner, you need to have a very good education in a relevant field of the labour market to have a good life in Germany. On top, speaking a language besides German, English and French could be an advantage. If you are just average, German employers might give you a tough time. But there are many possibilities to educate yourself if you are really determined to work hard. Learning German is a must. Otherwise, you will live in a (Berlin) bubble.

But one of the reasons why I love Germany so much is how you all learned from your past. You acknowledged the mistakes, apologised, moved on, and you guys always remember. This is important because if you forget, you will tend to do it again and I feel that the Germans of today have this important mentality which I think is so beautiful. ❤️ Looking forward to visit (if I’m lucky maybe even to live there hehe) 💕

I have been wanting to return since the day we boarded a train to Frankfurt, the first part of our return to the US. A couple years after our return, we were divorced but that has never killed my desire to return to Deutschland! I did some basic genealogy research and discovered where in Germany that my paternal great-grandparents and their children came from (Todtenhausen). Many decades ago, that town was at one time a part of the Bavarian state. Now I believe it is a part of Rheinland/North Westphalia. I'd like to join your group to try and gather more knowledge about what it would take for me to be able to return. Thank you for your videos, Diana! Believe me or not: she spoke no German - but she was fluent in French. Seems, military people tend to stay inside their installation and not interact much with the locals. One reason may be, that they will not stay long and expect to be deployed somewhere else anytime soon. What a pity.

Germany and the other Germanic countries such as Switzerland, Austria, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Belgium, as well as the Nordic countries are BY FAR the best countries in Europe and arguably the world. They're the best for their culture, history, education, social equality, lifestyle, development, and so much more.. The list goes on and on, just look at the stats for the most livable cities in the world, the best universities, best anything you can think of.. And on top of that, those countries are absolutely beautiful as well. ** About the US military families: That's the outcome of the Second World War. The US has several military bases in DE. Can I ask why you consider yourself an expat? Did your company send you here for a specific amount of time? I'm a Canadian immigrant to Germany, have been here for over 20 years and love it here. But I don't think it's right to make it seem like we're something better than other immigrants by titling ourselves as "expats". You talk about coming here to make Euros. How is that different than any other economic immigrant coming to make a better life for themselves? Something to think about?

I come from immigrant parents who moved to Canada, so I have no problem using that word if it was true for my situation.

@@DianaVerry hi Diana, thanks for your quick reply! I've been confronted with this topic a lot during my "time abroad", and it's a sensitive one for a lot of people. I've come to experience the word expat as a word that holds (not so) subtle overtones of racism and classism. I'm sure you feel the same, as a fellow Canadian, that society should be fair no matter where you're from. I've seen how I've been treated differently from other "Ausländer" due to my origin and academic level. I've been "lucky" in my life, so I feel a bit of responsibility to champion for others. I invite you to look deeper at your own beliefs and ideals as someone advocating an international lifestyle. I believe it is important to have a well rounded view of the situation and how it impacts people differently.
Quoting from an excellent and recommended article: "“Africans are immigrants. Arabs are immigrants. Asians are immigrants,” he writes. “However, Europeans [and North Americans] are expats because they can’t be at the same level as other ethnicities. They are superior. Immigrants is a term set aside for ‘inferior races’.”

I've been enjoying your videos, thanks for sharing.

People with german ancestry have it easy. They count as germans. They can have a german passport right away. Provided, they can prove their ancestry.

I don’t care if I cannot reach the level of fluency of Germany I’ll do my best I can to blend and adapt especially their language, Germany is great because their capitalism is great, healthcare is super effective, & the food & materials are affordable & even the prospect jobs are limitless even if you hold 2 degrees...
I’m hope that I can learn more than I want and need to know so that I can share and spread the kind of mindset in Philippines..... Hence, its economy & governance would be improve & flourish....

Germany is not a rich country but it is a economic powerful country. When the economy goes down the drain, with it goes the german people and the nation as a whole. Merkels multilevel destruction of the nation bears fruit in a pretty short timeframe I guess.

I'm still not quite used to people getting excited about little old Germany. When I grew up we were looking to other cultures to give us some inspiration. Punk from the UK. Rap from the US. Food from Italy and Greece, China and Turkey. Films from France and Spain. Etc. Germany was the most boring place in the world. That's why you traveled abroad. Castles, old churches? Come on, boring! Landscapes? same old, same old. We tried our own little thing. But that hardly found any attention elsewhere. I always blamed Hitler for wiping out all the interesting art movements in Germany. After the war, Germany was a cultural desert. But maybe in the light of recent developments in the world Germany shines in some respects. And for once, for all the right reasons.
