  • HyELLLOO. Since I knew we'd be busy with the move, I started filming this video a few weeks ago hehehe. I always love me a good 'let's just play with hair' video, so here ya GOOO.
    As my hair is getting longer, I've been getting a little bored with it, so I decided to take a cue from the AMAZING scarlettohair (her info is down below) and try out some heatless curl methods!
    ANYWHO I love you all!! Thank you for your patience while I get back to my regularly scheduled programming XD

    To all the people saying "no brushing!": Rachel's usually going for a mid-20th-century inspired look, which does require brushing out the set. What kind of look you end up with just depends on what type of brush, and how you brush it.
    This was a fun video! I loved seeing all the different results. I think the other person got a different result from the straws because she was twisting her hair and then wrapping it along the length of the straw rather than rolling it straight on, so that would be an interesting trial to see as well.
    Can't wait to see more of the new place once you're set up!

    • @renarde_0173
      @renarde_0173 Před 2 lety +72

      I was under the impression that it depends on the size of the curls, too - like, the little straw curls were unforgiving (I really loved them pre-brush, though), but the bigger curls looked neater when brushed out. Also I read somewhere that natural curls shouldn't get brushed out, but "hand-made" should, although I don't know why?

    A tip, when you are brushing out curls, use a boar bristle brush and only brush the curls from underneath so they don't frizz. Also, clean your brush free from hair before you brush so those hairs don't snag what's on your head. You should also give the curls a few minutes to set to retain their shapes before you brush them out from underneath. It works wonderfully and I have thin hair. Picking apart the curls with your fingers or a pick comb works well too.

      Glad there is a top comment mentioning this. Rachel - if you want some more volume and more of a "wave" effect with sleep-in braids, finger comb or use a super wide toothed comb; use just a touch of a reasonably priced detangler, divide your hair into sections, firmly hold a section of your hair near the roots without pulling the hair away from your scalp, then begin combing from the bottom . As another girl with long, unruly hair I can attest that this works well. I don't wash my hair very often so I opt to braid it every night and it never fails to look cute messy in the morning, and after taking the braids out, looks elegant throughout the day. It's my go-to also bc I can't stand sleeping with anything digging into my head. Even a soft robe belt tie thing would keep me up all night!

Watching this as someone who basically grew up in a hair salon because my mom did hair for a living for a long time... slightly less stressful? Like, brushing out curls is legit. @@bowenarrows7819 Keeping in mind that I am working from past observation (my mother stopped doing hair around 20 years ago), what I most remember being used for brushing out curl sets was boar bristle brushes. You can probably use a paddle brush or cushion brush if that's what you've got, but technique is important. I remember her brushing from the underside and using her other hand to support the hair, then smoothing the top layer. You can probably find some good vintage hair tutorials on blogs or youtube channels that focus on vintage/pinup style that will explain it better than I can.

    Say it with me now, wide tooth comb. With a vintage set you absolutely want a brush to get the perfect shape. But with most heatless methods you want a wide tooth comb to break up the curls without introducing frizz. Also your hair texture is super reminiscent of my daughters and one thing I have found that works best is a misty spray bottle when I comb it out really makes a huge difference. But all that to say I have serious hair envy as I recently had to chop all mine off due to an unfortunate bleach incident.

    The method Rachel used for the flexi-rods is basically just doing her foam roller set with a different tool. You can get a different effect by putting the end of your hair at the end of the rod, then spiraling up the length of the rod. (Gods I hope that wording made sense.) It makes for a *much* tighter curl that I love to wear. Though the rods I like to use are smaller than the ones she used here. Not as small as the straws though

      @fibromiteready2fight809 Před 2 lety +1

      @@marabuora9547before you start anything, I’d advise figuring out your hair’s porosity (how porous it is). If it gains and loses moisture really quickly, and/or bleaches really quick, it’s probably high porosity. If it takes a few minutes to get wet and you sometimes see actual water droplets just laying on your hair, it’s probably low porosity. Different porosities need different products. Then, I’d recommend looking at India Batson and Penny Tovar. If you get not the method for a few weeks or months and you feel like your hair is just naturally looser than theirs, I’d look into a wavy hair routine. Hope this helps!

    I love these! The stick one is my fav out of all of them. ❤️
    Personally I curl my hair using a rope braid/rope bun method. Basically you split your hair into two sections, twist each section in the same direction, twist them against each other in the opposite direction and secure with an elastic at the bottom. The easiest and most secure way to do it is to twist a little bit, then switch strands, and keep twisting and switching. If your hair is long enough you can then twist the whole thing into a bun. In the morning you just take the elastic out and go through the hair with your fingers, no brushing required (or desired! You don't wanna end up with limp curls.)
    It produces these nice, soft curls, halfway between curls and waves really. Makes me feel like an Old Hollywood star or Jessica Rabbit, lol. And if you want tighter curls, all you have to do is make two braids instead of one, or even more, it's up to you.

    • @brendaleelydon
      @brendaleelydon Před 2 lety +3

      Yes! My mantra is "twist to the right, cross over the left" so I remember what step I'm on, haha. Sometimes I'll break it into 3 or 4 braids (mostly in an attempt to get SOME wave/volume near my roots, since my hair is painfully straight), then I twist 2 of the twists together, THEN twist the doubled twists into a single rope that I then twirl into a topknot for sleeping. Other times, I just twist them into 2 & wear 2 buns to bed. Heh heh,

    How did you KNOW I have been looking at heatless curl methods for my long hair!? Thank you for testing them for me! This was fun!

    Loved this!! I either do sponge rollers or victorian rag curls (similar to the robe curls, but I use 10 strips of thick fabric and wrap one chunk of hair around each strip). The rag curls probably last the longest for me and aren't absolute butt to sleep in haha

      Do you brush out with a wider tooth brush?

      @@swish3432 sometimes I just use my fingers to brush out the rag curls, but I use a regular brush for the sponge rollers. I really should buy a wide tooth comb

    Oh, this brought up so many memories of having long hair and being the daughter of a hairstylist! Except in my case, I used the largest rollers I could find because I was trying to tame my natural curls. (Straw 'do post-brushing was exactly how I naturally looked in junior high.)
