One of my favourite details is the nuanced evolution between Elizabeth and Barbossa's character. How she takes a lot of pirate knowledge into account from him and utilises it. She did it even in the first movie where she brings up how the pirate code are more "like guidelines" which he told her when she first boarded his ship. And then in this movie, you have them start off thorny where she doesn't trust him whatsoever when he steers them off the edge of the world, parallel that to the climax of the movie where the first person she knows who is mad and brave enough to guide the Pearl through the maelstrom is Barbossa. You also have that amazing speech where she uses his words from the court scene and adapts it. Finally, there's the final scene between them where he calls her "Mrs. Turner" in reference to calling her "Ms. Turner" in the first movie. That nod from him and genuine smile from Elizabeth showcased a mutual respect between the two. It's these little things that make these characters so interesting in the Verbinski trilogy and so much more fun to rewatch!

Jack's father "actor" is actually Keith Richard's of The Rolling Stones. Johnny used him as an inspiration to create Jack Sparrow way of moving and speaking, and he invited him to be literally his "father" in the last movie, he even plays the guitar as a reference, it's just dope!

I noticed a nice character detail for Norrington. Beckett tells him “your new station deserves an old friend.” and he gives him his old sword back, the one Will made for him in the very beginning of the first movie. This probably gave Norrington a pang of guilt because his admiration of the sword at the end of the first movie was a symbol for his character growth and giving Will his blessing. he closes his character arc by stabbing Davy Jones with it as his final act. in fact, Davy Jones then takes the sword and uses it to stab Will later. I’m now realizing the sword definitely has an interesting trajectory across 3 movies.

there's a shear amount to observe in these films; even inanimate objects have a story to tell and this sword definitely has one.
The thing I like about the comment section (didn't think I would speak highly of the comment section) is that we have a community of spectators who would take note of several details that are easily overlooked. It shows me that - as if we have a film club - we have a knack for literary discussion.

To be fair, Jack just seems worse cuz his style is more drunken. Plus you have to remember the immense weight shift while carrying a heavy metal chest, while balancing on a ship's mast that's being shot at in the middle of a raging maelstrom. Swordfighting would be difficult for anyone. Plus he's still perhaps the best marksman out of all of them. Swinging on said ship being fired at in maelstrom and eyeballing it to shoot the chest specifically out of Jones's hand is a feat.

    • @cameronjosephvideos5942
      @cameronjosephvideos5942 Před rokem +4

Honestly, regardless of what the filmmakers say they all seem pretty much even as far as movie feats go. Jack actually disarmed Will in their first duel so Will had to take advantage of all the swords, there was no hint of Jack being the weaker of the two. There was also no clear power scaling with the Jack, Will and Norrington fight. The only time any of them was on the backfoot was when they both ganged up on Jack. I can however say that Elizabeth is the weakest swordsman due to how easily Jones seemed to beat her, especially when Jack had just beat his ass while balancing on a sail. I'd argue Barbossa is the strongest as he did actually seem to be dominating his duel with Jack in the first one which was why Jack had to resort to using the curse then just shooting him.

15:51 I thought I knew all the hidden details about these films, but this is some Jack-Beckett background lore I recently heard for the first time:
Before he became a pirate, Jack was employed by the East India Trading Company as captain of a ship called the "Wicked Wench". Once he had to transport 100 slaves, but freed them instead. Before the compass throwing interaction Lord Beckett says Jack "stole cargo" from him, and Jack corrects him and answers "people aren't cargo, mate". But because he technically did relieve the EITC of their property, he became a pirate and they hunted him down, sinking and burning the "Wicked Wench" in the process (Beckett says the last time he saw Jack's ship as a sinking wreck with black hulls). After that, Jack entered a deal with Davy Jones to get his ship back (see Dead Man's chest), but the black burned hull stayed, hence the new name "Black Pearl". Cruel as Jones is, when Jack doesn't want to pay up the original price, his soul, Jones demands 100 souls in return instead - oh the cruel irony of freeing 100 souls just to enslave another 100 in return...

This is my favourite of the trilogy.
The theme of the mystical/magic world being snuffed out for “progression” is one that has always stuck with me.
The way Jack looks at the very creature that took him to the afterlife is almost emotional, as he’s not happy it’s dead.
    In fact he’s probably mourning.
Because the death of the Kraken meant more than a magnificent monster being killed (as tragic as that is), but that it’s the end of the era of Pirates, and his way of life.
Because of this I never really considered the other 2 films as part of the story in my head-canon, because this trilogy just wraps everything up so nicely. Will is captain of the Dutchman, the curse is lifted, Elizabeth has a child and Jack, well, he’s just being Captain Jack.
Love love LOVE this trilogy, so glad you loved it as well James.

This is by far my favorite one of the trilogy because of how layered the plot is. Everybody seems to be working their own angles, but you can literally SEE when Jack gets an idea and you can see how far ahead he is thinking. It starts from the time he gets aboard Beckett's ship and begins to very obviously "look" for Jones's heart by opening containers. He knows it isn't there and it wouldn't be anywhere but in the chest, but he pretends so Beckett will tell him _where_ he's keeping the chest.
Later that night, he tells Will, "You escaped from the brig even quicker than I thought." He absolutely KNEW Will could and would break out and that he would lead Beckett to the pirates in order to be able to get to Jones. And Jack needed and wanted Will to lead them there, which is why he gives Will the compass, knowing Will will use it to good effect. In the meantime, he manipulates the Brethren Court into fighting, into coming out of Shipwreck Cove because Jack knows his only chance to get aboard the Dutchman will be in a head on fight.
When they bring up the fact only the King can declare war, when he reads the duties of the King, notice how he lands on the word "Parley" while talking about "negotiat(ing) treaties with shared enemies." So he calls for the vote and backs Elizabeth because she is the only one who wants to fight, and ofc she will parley to get Will back because she and Will are always saving each other. Jones and Becket are the only two people on that sandbar who don't realize Jack has a plan and this is why he's trying to get aboard the Dutchman. Barbossa even tells Jack, "If ye have something to say [re: Barbossa's plans for Jack's Piece of Eight], I might be sayin' something meself." In other words, you dare to hint at what I'm up to, I'm going to expose your plan to Jones. When they are walking away and Will questions how Elizabeth became King and she says it was Jack's doing, Will says, "Maybe he really does know what he's doing."
And when he sees the crew approaching Will with the knife, he knows he needs to get himself and Elizabeth out of there because she does not need to see that, and the Dutchman is going to submerge. It takes him no time at all to see the way out of the situation and implement it. The man really is a genius, but he dupes everyone into thinking otherwise by playing at being drunk and slightly crazy most of the time.

World's End is my favorite of the trilogy. It goes for broke and crushes on every level. Huge action set pieces, huge plot developments, huge character arcs and huge comedy. Davy Jones standing in a bucket (with a line back to the shore 🤣) is such an amazing visual joke i was cackling through the whole scene.
A tidbit from the prequel books - Beckett was the one who branded Jack a pirate for freeing a cargo of slaves (theft of property 😬) and set his ship ablaze (which is why the Pearl is blackened). Jones condemning Jack to deliver him 100 souls is an ironic twist on his good deed.

This movie got a decent bit of hate back in the day, for being too complicated. But IMO it's a great end to a trilogy. I highly appreciate how ambitious, nuanced, big and epic this film is. For something based on a theme park ride, this trilogy did a better job than anyone could have ever expected.
I love this movies themes. It's an end of an era. The world is becoming modern, the maps are fully drawn, and the immaterial has become immaterial. The fantastical and the superstition clash with progress and modernization. It's up the last few rock stars of the seas, to put up a struggle against the inevitable end. It's a deep movie.
Also, I HIGHLY recommend that you look up the deleted scenes for this movie. Some rather important scenes got left on the cutting room floor, and they are really worth checking out.

Yeah I feel this movie was highly misgiven in its ratings and thankfully it’s seen alot more of a revival as of late.
I think the problem at the time it released was that people were still riding the “politics and scheming and slow pace talky scenes in a action fantasy movie shouldn’t be there”. But they are required for both moving the plot forward, giving deep incite into each character and there motivations and it gives good pacing between the action moments - which finally culminates in the final battle scene.
Personally I’ve always enjoyed it and I think one of my most gone back to reviews which I feel has soured massively overtime and when you look at what they say doesn’t hit the mark half the time is Film Brains review of Worlds End.
It feels like he was more caught up in trying to be the nostalgia critic alongside making crude jokes and taking the piss while completely ignoring what was said during the calmer scenes.
Truthfully, I’ve always wondered what he’d have thought of Master & Commander if he’d saw it around the same time. A action movie with very spare battle scene (but amazingly done) but split up with lots of slower pace scenes getting to know the crew and characters and their relationship and life on the ship.

15:04 This my favorite moment in the trilogy, and one of my favorite movie quotes ever. Moments like that are why I love Jack Sparrow. He can be insane, funny and weird, but when he gets real, he really gets real.
The scene just shows how passionate he is about being a pirate. Dude stands on the beach, looking at a corpse of a giant sea monster that killed him, and feels sad for it. Kraken was the last one of it's kind, it was a scary, magnificent, mysterious creature, and a part of the mythical side of their world. It was a wonder that it even existed. With The Kraken dead, the world feels just that little bit less exciting for Jack, still big, but more empty.
It also symbolizes the end of the pirate era depicted in the movie. Soon, the sea travel will be industrialized, technological progress will come quick, whole world will be mapped and described, there will be no more mysterious land to find, no more weird creatures to see, no more myths and legends. Jack knows this. He can feel these are the last days of true pirates, he feels the world being less and less exciting for him.
Man, it's a shame they continued the series after this one and made Jack into a bumbling idiot. He was a smart, brilliantly written character in the original trilogy. Just like the "Once upon a time in the west" was the last days of cowboys, this movie really feels like the last ride of pirates, like the last great adventure and is a perfect ending.
Man I love this scene. It always reminds me to never forget the wonders and excitment of living, even though I'm changing, and the world around me is changing too.

That explains a lot about jack as a person and his relationship with Beckett, the black pearl was once called the wicked wench and jack used to run cargo for the east India trading company. Beckett asked jack to ferry 100 slaves for him but jack refused to, so Beckett had the wicked wench set alight and it sank. Jack then went to Davy Jones to have the ship risen allowing to be captain for 13 years. But when he rose it the ships hull was burnt and charred so jack renamed it the Black pearl. In deadman’s chest Davy asked jack for 100 souls to add to insult of the 100 slaves he freed, the people holding the candles in memory of jack at the end of deadman’s chest were the people he freed. Now back to the scene that was deleted jack said one line that to me defined his character; “people aren’t cargo mate”

This is my personal favorite of the original trilogy because it's the one that does the deepest dive into how the characters feel. We get so many moments where the characters are just allowed to breathe and exist and share their perspectives on life and freedom. AWE is a film about feeling and perspective and how the two interact with each other. It's deeply thematic. It's just great, plus it has that final battle that still holds up insanely well. I still can't believe that the entire sequence is blue screen because it looks totally seamless. So glad you finally checked these films out! 4 and 5 aren't as good in my opinion because Gore Verbinski's style and command of the camera is deeply missed, plus it was meant to originally be a trilogy, so 4 and 5 end up feeling unnecessary, but don't feel pressured to not check them out if you still feel like carrying on the Pirates journey! Keep up the great work!

I was in high school when The Curse of the Black Pearl debuted and my family went to see this trilogy at the El Capitan Theater in Hollywood. It was so much fun with the decorations and wardrobe display from the films. They even had an organ player playing the “Yo Ho!” song from the ride before the movie started and everyone was clapping their hands to the music and getting excited! What an awesome, incredible and amazing experience to witness up close and I’ll never forget it for the rest of my life. Unfortunately I never got the chance to see On Stranger Tides in Hollywood because I thought that movie was incredible too but that’s okay. I hope you enjoy the rest of the series and find some positivity in each installment

(Part 1) For anybody who is always praising the first movie to be the best. I have been studying 1-3 and I constantly re-watch them. Pirates of the Caribbean does not go downhill in writing after the first movie. That is your business to believe that opinion everyone else goes with.
Dead man’s chest gave the characters more depth! Elizabeth and William barely have anything to work with in the first movie. William’s relationship with his father that was hinted in the first movie of his father‘s existence. Paid off wonderfully. William’s character had way more in depth now and you have something to truly care about him for. You get both perspectives when you understand their Reunion! Bootstrap didn’t want Will to become a pirate like him, he wanted him to have a free life from the pirate life. William had a hard time accepting he was half Pirate but when he accepted his life and his father… He has a new journey to stab the heart of Davy Jones to set his father free.
And you’re implying William is better in the first movie just because he wanted to save the girl he loved? William in the second movie now has Elizabeth as a lover. And now a new journey to rescue his father someone else he cares about. And this became a difficult situation when bootstrap told Elizabeth at world‘s end. William has to make a decision. Either don’t kill Davy Jones so he can be with you. Or he does kill Davy Jones and set me free, but he won’t be able to be on land for 10 years. If I were him I wouldn’t pick me! 😕 The emotional weight on William’s character gets better and better.
Elizabeth in the first movie was just a damsel in distress girl. She wasn’t useless in the first movie but you get the point. In the second movie, Elizabeth learned to wield a sword and she used it in the battle. She pulled a gun to Beckett‘s head.. went on her own journey to save will.
She has grown a lot since the first movie who was just an innocent girl! Elizabeth got better as a character in 2 and 3!
As for Jack sparrow. He does not become a joke at all in all 3 movies.
Jack sparrow is at his best in the second movie and in the third movie. There was a moment in dead men’s chest… Where Jack didn’t know what he truly wanted so the compass couldn’t locate what he desired. So when Elizabeth went on her journey and then found Jack.. Jack used her for his advantage! He took advantage of Elizabeth’s feelings by telling her if you want to save Will you have to want to find the chest of Davy Jones! In order to get will back.. That’s why Jack gave her the compass. Jack knew if he couldn’t figure what he wanted out he was going to get it out of Elizabeth. Since Elizabeth now wants to find the chest of Davy Jones to save will. This gives Jack the huge opportunity to find the chest to stab the heart in it. But instead he wants to control DavyJones before killing him. Jack sparrow is not stupid! When will was trying to stab the heart towards the end of the second movie. Jack knows just because Davy Jones is dead, does not mean the Kraken will be stopped as well. And you’re telling me Jack is dumb after part 1??
As for Beckett. He was a well executed villain who uses dialogue and negotiation to control people. The Reason why Beckett didn’t fire his cannons at worlds end. Was because it would be totally out of his character to use weapons. Beckett uses certain words to get through people and how to control them behind the scenes. Beckett at the end of the movie had nothing left to negotiate with. Davy Jones was dead, Jack sparrow is alive and well. Will Turner is now the new captain of the Flying Dutchman. Beckett had literally nothing to use against on people. He was caught in shocked and he decided to die..
Anyways I could defend the Gore Verbinski’s Trilogy all night. His trilogy is an underrated trilogy. It had great character writing and amazing detail of its depth.
Also Will vs Davy Jones!!! 😈😈😈
    when Will challenging Davy Jones.
Davy Jones asks him how do you know about the key?
Will replies and says, that's NOT part of the game is it? 😏 You can STILL walk away!! 😏
As for pirates 4/5 they are not even Canon they are filler movies. The story ended at worlds end! ☠️
(Part 2) Dead man’s chest has a very simple plot.. Jack sparrow is the master at controlling peoples hearts to get what he wants and out of a situation. He screwed over Will so Jack can save himself… But it worked in his favor for his reunion to meet his father.. William even told Jack you screwed me over but because of you I was reunited with my father after such a long time.. Elizabeth was caught in Jack’s illusion of trusting him to get Will back that had nothing to do with him which was a lie. Will being on Davy Jones ship had everything to do with Jack lol. Jack left on good terms with Elizabeth and William in the first movie. Elizabeth had every right to believe Jack…. It was Jack who took advantage of her feelings to find the chest by telling her if you want to find will you need to find the chest of Davy Jones! But it was an illusion so Jack can get closer to find the chest of Davy Jones to control him. But to also go back and save will after Jack got what he wanted.
If people don’t understand these movies that’s their problem. But I understand every movie! That’s why I rank 2>3>1 ☠️☠️☠️
(Part 3) I’m sorry to break it to you but the curse of the Black Pearl is my least favorite in the trilogy. I rewatch the trilogy every few months. And to me I just don’t find it as deep or as interesting compared to dead man’s chest or at worlds end.
Curse of the Black Pearl is still a well written amazing film. It’s just I’d rather choose having William struggle on trying to save his father from Davy Jones along side using very clever strategy and dialogue during the dice liar game on Davy Jones to get key from him.. VS William in the first movie who just wants to save Elizabeth….
I love darker storytelling and when steaks are becoming higher! Dead man’s chest gave me everything.. Elizabeth was a useful damsel in stress female lead in the first movie. But I would rather choose her character development in the second movie compared to her in the first movie.
Elizabeth pulled a gun on Beckett’s face. She went on her own journey to save William. Who also taught her how to defend herself with swords. And that paid off well at the end of the movie! Her development is miles better in (Dead mens chest) compared to herself in the first movie who just takes the fall for William to protect him from Barbosa.
Jack sparrow’s dialog and clever intelligence grew (MORE) in (dead men’s chest) and (at worlds end) and you cannot convince me otherwise. If people think he became a joke after the first movie that sounds like a (YOU PROBLEM) Jack sparrow is pretty intelligent in the second movie on being a master at manipulation and taking advantage of people around him to get himself out of a situation in order to save his life and possibly everyone else’s. He just knows how to play the game like that….. You can’t trust Jack sparrow on making the right decisions because he’s supposed to be ahead of the game on everyone’s perspective on him. If Jack was easy to follow with answers he wouldn’t be Jack sparrow lol.
Not to mention what’s with this opinion on people saying Jack sparrow was someone you should not mess with?? Jack sparrow literally wants you to mess with him so he can use that to his advantage to pull you in under his string, for you to doubt him in order to rise up above everyone else. You were caught in his illusion the entire time so he can be superior at the end of the situation and screw you over. If Jack sparrow was someone to NOT mess with, just like Davy Jones.. Then you wouldn’t be caught in Jack sparrow’s illusion on being the worst pirate in the world..
No seriously if Jack had the same fear approach as Davy Jones…. Then all you would have to do were to look at Jack sparrow for a few seconds and be so scared of him, Everyone would just run away.. literally what’s the fun in that for Jack Sparrow?! If he was someone to not mess like people claim. Then (WHY) do people keep on assisting 100% on messing with Jack Sparrow?? Please answer that man lol. That literally makes no sense…
You have to mess with Jack sparrow to be caught in his illusion of doubtfulness so he can be the superior person in the situation and also getting out of a dangerous situation. He literally pulls you in as a fool because people were messing with them. Like come on?! 😂

It’s such an underrated trilogy! It takes risks and doesn’t dumb things down for audiences. The Davey Jones Locker scene throw people off but it completely shows the courage and self conviction this trilogy had in itself. It constantly built up.
The visual effects are so good and are better than most MCU or DC movies. A big reason is visual effect artist at incredibly over worked, underpaid and have no union. Whereas props and production design have a union so they are more expensive (paid what they’re worth) and can’t be pushed to such extreme deadlines. You can really see it in the last couple of phases of MCU. The shots are so flat because it’s all filmed on green screen. These pirate movie clearly use green screen but the props and physical set construction show the perfect blend of practical and CGI. What’s happening now with visual effects team is they are working non stop, so many MCU movies and such little time for them. There’s even clips of Taika roasting effects in his new Thor movie, which isn’t really fair on the artist and shows he didn’t work with them much at all.
There’s been some good recent articles about a worker who quit talking about how bad the work conditions are. Worth looking up. It’s a shame too Disney should have unlimited budget to make the best looking movies but it’s currently like factory movie making, sweatshop productions in order to keep up with the amount of media they’re making
