    What a wonderful rendition! I grew up in Winston-Salem, NC, founded by the Moravians, and loved singing this at the Christmas Eve Lovefeasts we attended at Home Moravian Church where my next older sister also rehearsed on an old Flentrop organ there. She studied under John and Margaret Mueller at Salem College, beginning as a young child, many years ago. This is beautiful!!

    Thank you, Taylor, for this lovely rendition. The song was written by organist, composer and minister Francis Hagen in the 1830's. As he lived in Salem, he probably wrote it there. I have a copy of a later edition published in the 1850's in York and Philadelphia. The original is at the Moravian Music Foundation. I have always wanted to hear the boy choristers sing this!

      Thanks, sailorette 1....I've always loved this since singing it in a children's choir in Roanoke...always did this at my church in Salisbury with a children's choir singing the verses (in unison) and the SATB adults singing the little repeats (antiphonally)....always a real treat!!

    Morning Star, O cheering sight!
    Ere thou cam’st, how dark earth’s night!
    Morning Star, O cheering sight!
    Ere thou cam’st, how dark earth’s night!
    Jesus mine, in me shine;
    In me shine, Jesus mine;
    fill my heart with light divine.

    Mary Immaculate, Star of the morning,
    Chosen before the creation began,
    Chosen to bring for thy bridal adorning,
    Woe to the serpent and rescue to man.
    Here, in an orbit of shadow and sadness,
    Veiling thy splendor, thy course thou hast run;
    Now thou art throned in all glory and gladness,
    Crowned by the hand of the savior and Son.
    Sinners, we worship thy sinless perfection;
    Fallen and weak, for thy pity we plead;
    Grant us the shield of thy sovereign protection,
    Measure thine aid by the depth of our need.
    Bend from thy throne at the voice of our crying,
    Bend to this earth which thy footsteps have trod;
    Stretch our thine arms to us, living and dying,
    Mary immaculate, Mother of God.”

      Thanks for recording this beautiful rendition! I found two more stanzas. I will try to add them later. If I am not wrong, then the melody is from Himmels-Lust, 1679, adapted and harmonized by Johann Sebastian Bach (31 March 1685-28 July 1750) of Eisenach to Leipzig, (Central East, modern day) Germany. Please feel free to correct me. Thanks again! Ave Maria! God bless:
