  • There are three (3) types of Microsoft high availability clusters; each one functions different from the other. Understanding each one of them can help you decide which technology to use to implement high availability to your SQL Server workloads - database engine, SQL Server Reporting Services, SQL Server Analysis Services. This can also help you avoid the confusion of which specific technology can be used for the SQL Server database engine.

Do we need a load balancer for NLB cluster?

The Windows NLB cluster is in itself the load balancer. It serves both purposes - load balancing and high availability. It's unlike the typical network load balanced appliance where it only provides load balancing.
